Going back to page 13, the word terrier stems from the Latin word terra, or earth. Hence, earth dog. You will see terra in words such as terrain. It means the ground or the earth.

My version? At least I know the difference between the English Bull Terrier and the dogs that came from Staffordshire England.
Funny of all the fighting dogs which came here from all over the world the only dogs which claim to have Terrier in them was the dogs from England and those dogs no one can state which terrier was bred into them. Again I think people confused the 2 breeds. The Staffords was much older breed of dog then the English Bull Terrier. I don't think the people in England even knew where or how they came about. Remember the English Bull Terrier was created to compete against the Staffords.
EBT was a cross from the "modern English Bulldog" and the English White Terrier.
Staffords came from the original Bulldog.

BTW Terrier are a cross between the Bulldog and Hounds, this common knowledge even for a novice.

BTW don't ever confuse what I think with what Foundation thinks. No we don't agree when it comes to Colby dogs. Then again I have seen hundreds of them compared to the few he has saw.
And 50 years more experience between us.
Your read was pretty good until you drag me into it.

Re: why don't apbt look like the dogs that first came over from england & ireland

Mr. Crabb is a life long friend of mine. A finer example of someone who is consistency conscious as to immediate bloodlines, and quality conscious at the same time you will not find. He related to me once that Panhandle Belle's breeding may or may not be correct, as there were several versions of her breeding including unknown altogether. Don't panic. She produced her everlovin' ass off. So all is good.

I'm off subject a bit, but the thread has done its usual veer.

I think the reasons these dogs may not look exactly as they did well over a hundred years ago are: 1. That's a hell of a long time of breeding dogs for traits without focusing on how they look. 2. These dogs rarely look exactly like one another NOW, and it's all for about the same reason. More familial looks, also, which vary from family to family, sometimes more than others. And, with new family structures, even some slight variances from other families occur as they become a new nucleus of dogs. It's just ever changing. Maybe not radically, but it changes here and there, and the more time that goes by from the beginning dogs, the easier it is to see a little change. It's like someone or a child you see every day. You notice the changes less than if you see him as a child, then see that child years later. We notice change much more when example A and example B are so far apart in time.
