Working Bulldog Types

Discussion in 'Dog Discussion' started by Scare Crow, Mar 1, 2021.

  1. Just wondering about the different types of working bulldogs people keep these days. Back in the good days they had good working bulldogs all over the South. No particular name,Southern bulldogs,Old Bostons,Old Bulldogs were some of the names they were called.
Not the over cobby ,can't breathe, slow etc.
Many had a good athletic build, short muzzle, undershot and were generally good with folks and other dogs but high drive towards vermin.
I haven't seen any like that in years.

    This is a pitbull form.

  4. Just old working bulldogs. Yes I am aware it is but I thought working dogs were included. My mistake if the moderator wants to delete this thread.

I got a guy on my Facebook that breeds them. Victorian Bulldogs I believe he called them. Also called them old southern bulldogs.

It's fine. People don't just talk about APBT here. There are other working terrier folk on here too so I don't see why we can't lean the other way towards bulldogs as well.

what I was looking for , any evidence they existed before the 1950s ,,either some written evidence or photos that don't show white APBTs ? I really think all this white English , southern bulldogs and American Pit Bulldog , was all invented in late 1950s -early 60s

They used to be called American pit Bulldog but they changed the name to American Bulldog in 89 or 90. John .D. Johnson had the name changed because People confuse the two.

  19. Best I remember in that time were 2 basic lines; Johnson & Painter . The Painter were more pit like in appearance and Johnson heavier built with shorter muzzle.
Then a friend had a black which was unusual then i think he said was a Beasley line??
