    Jeff Clark explains the
    OLD SOUTHERN WHITE

The Old White English Bulldogs have been here in the Southern States since the earliest settlers...all I've ever heard them called was White English Bulldogs. They are a.k.a. Old English Whites, Old Southern Whites, and I believe they are the same as the Mountain Bulls.
I got my first bulldogs in 1964 after graduating from High School. Gene was the guy mine came from. His wife was a nurse, and worked for a doctor over in Washington County. He had those Bulldogs for as far back as I can remember. I used to see them when I was a kid. They would lay up in front of his house by the highway and watch everything go by, but I never saw one leave the yard. They were big boned, white and bully looking. My Uncles always told me they were White English Bulldogs. This is the same stock that I have now. They are very smart. Most of the time all you have to do is just talk to them, they seem to understand everything you say. They are easy to obedience train , and eager to please. For the most part they are the biggest clowns you ever saw. Always finding something to get into.
I have caught wild hogs and one horse and one cow. So I would say they would catch anything they were trained to catch. I don't breed man aggressive dogs. I don't need them biting someone without provocation. They are how ever protective of family and home. A dog with a stable temperament does not mean they won't protect.
In the beginning my dogs were all white. Every once in a while I would get one with a spot on it. I then started breeding the ones with spots until I have a little color on them. Most always it's on the head. In size they range from 70 lbs. to 100 lbs. Every once in a blue moon, one may grow out larger than that, but that is an exception rather than the rule. I have now on my yard 3 males and 4 females. Normally when I make a breeding I do it for me. It has been a little over a year since I've had a litter. I have 2 breedings planned for this year. I will be keeping some for me and I have several friends that are waiting for a pup. A lot of my pups go to repeat buyers. There are several people that are using these White English in their breeding programs on Scott and Johnson dogs, and from what I've been told, they've had good results.
I know this..I won't ever be without one here on my place.... I work rotating shift work, and I know that when I leave for work...my family is safe from harm , be it man or beast....If they greet you at the drive it's o. k. to get out , but you don't want to mess with my family....They also do varmint control here....If it belongs here it can stay....if it don't, it dang sure better be fast....my males are male dog aggressive and my females normally get along together pretty well.

When it was legal to have those Hog Catching Contest there were three classes you had the AB class and a pitbull class and a Open class meaning you could enter any type of breed of dog that would catch a Hog. Hell when the Pitbull class was over. it's time to go get a Hot Dog and a Coke.:)

The Indians used to have those hog catching contests around my area. Mostly ran cat's, curs and mixed breed dogs. Don't know if they were game but could catch their ass off. Some would even scream when taken off the hog. The folks had a lot of pride in their dogs no matter what breed it was. My only hunt end quick and the only thing that got hit was a bay dog. I didn't get invited back after they took it pretty hard lol.

personally, I think people get too hung up on the name. It was a type of -bulldog- that worked for what people needed. Prob some old school Boxer, EB, APBT, and mastiff in the genetic woodpile. Multiple Different groups made their way to these shores. If a German guy w a Boxer and an Irish guy w a Staff lived near each other and they need a type of bulldog for work. If both their dogs did the job needed, why wouldnt they do a breeding.

Thats all true , but was there ever a large white bulldog type in the USA before the 1950s,, Iv never seen any photos or articles written about them, there was never that type of Bulldog in England , even what is call now British Bulldog was only developed in the 1850s ,and ware never anywhere near the size of American Bulldogs

While I'm no history buff most everything I read about the breed says the same things. You probably don't see many of them prior to 1950 because it states in most the history pages I've read on them that they were almost extinct after WW2 so I'd assume that's why you won't see much in photos around that Era. They say less than a handful of people still had them in that time.

Wasn't alive in 1950 so can only rely on what is written. Every page I read said they came to this country with the early settlers. That would be well before 1950.

  14. Could this breeds ancestors just simply be the old English mastiff?(witch was a big mutt bulldog anyways i guess)before 1950 i mean here btw.
Believe me or not the mastiff never just came in a fawn colour, infact plenty of them were white..
Here’s some old mastiffs before dog shows started.
    Hope this helps!

Most All dogs are basically mutts. They crossed this to that to get those.
