I don't know , they don't enlarge for me if I click on to Thumbnail photos? there never was a breed from Britain that is made or looks like any version of American Bulldogs ,, there is no mention of them in any articles ,, just wondering where every one has seen them mentioned before 1950s

  2. I could only see thumbnails.
But regardless of the name, the description Jeff Clark gave is the type ID like .
I once had an Alapaha from a friend. He bought her at about a year and a half old and couldn't touch her.

Somehow they got her in a crate and brought her to me.
The 1st day I was able to get her to crawl out. The 2nd day she slowly trots up to greet me.The 3rd day it's like I raises her from a pup .Shes glued to my side listening to simple commands.
I called my friend and he doesn't believe me.
He comes over and she went to attack mode at him hitting the fence dancing in front of me like protecting me.
I have no idea why but ahe

  3. Ended up being such a great intelligent very protective family dog.

0306211007.jpg 0306211006.jpg I had a nice American bulldog in the mid 90s bred down from a female named snowbird. He was a very athletic dog. He did not have a short muzzle but it was not as long as a pitbull muzzle. I had pitbulls back then and I still do now, but I wish I would have bred a line of these american bulldogs. Now it seems like all the bulldogs I see look like giant english bulldogs.

the dogs we knew as American bulldogs in the late 80s early 90s were nothing like the dogs of today

Country Boy and Snowbird are a cpl really well known dogs. Some breeders based their programs around those and or used them as an outcross. I have them way back in my dogs. That type, or style of AB would be considered Scott or Performance bred. They are still around but the vast majority are the giant EB, Johnson, or hybrid type.

you dont think this male looks like a bulldog from GB before the 1900s or a Boxer?

I’ve always followed stouts/Hines/dorseys/ white nights/and Joshua kennels. A lot of times they’ll try and say their dogs came over from England and were the original bulldog with zero pit influence, so the story goes. In 1835 I believe “bull baiting” and bear baiting were outlawed. The dogs they used for bull baiting were fairly large molosser type dogs, like 80-90 lbs. when baiting was outlawed they bred these dogs to smaller terriers and other small working breeds and pit fighting was born. Apparently the idea was to make a smaller more manageable dog in the pit. I believe these are the dogs that made it over from England and variations of what we know today. Alan Scott is still around Judging shows throughout the country. He went one way with his dogs and Johnson went the other. But, I believe both lines are down from game pits lines to make a more pet type bulldog. The OSW is what I originally mentioned and I believe that is just a marketing ploy. Currently I have an OFRN and an AB for my daughter. No reason in that order just the way it happened. My AB is out of Konfederate kennels and you’ll see a lot of heavy hitters deep in his ped. Boss hog, felony, dick the bruiser, etc. none of that really means much to me. A dog will most likely replicate what’s within a few generations occasionally shooting back 6+. I know I’m all over the place, but what I’m saying is- there are plenty of working bulldogs out there still. You just have to know where to look, and what you want. Plenty of snowbirds, country boys, boss hogs, and much hotter and colder dogs.

60534500506db30902faecf92a12f80e.jpg old photo showing two very different types of bulldogs. One looks like a english bulldog and one looks very much like the original american bulldog. There was a picture posted above from a dog show, dog show pictures are probably the worst pictures to you when researching the looks of these early dog breeds because all the dogs at the show are meant to fit into a standard but what about all the dogs that don't fit the standard. There is a lot of variation in early bulldogs it would have been very easy to end up with several different looking bulldog breeds depending on the breeder without crossing in other breeds. This does not mean crosses were not used, but we cannot just say they were because of looks.

They did not all look like the bulldogs from the dog shows

  13. I forgot to mention what about Bill Gorges Alanos he imported to England and blatantly crossed them with the pug blooded bulldogs of the time.daft kennel club rules would not allow the dogs to be registered as bulldogs because of the Spanish Alano blood!
So bill obviously sold them crosses of..guess what?around this time bull and mastiffs used by gamekeepers come on the seen, the cross had been used for centuries but the bull mastiff as a breed came around the time bill was breeding alano blood into the pug blooded bulldogs.rumor has it he shipped many over seas.perhaps these were the foundation for the American bulldog?
That’s not to say the American bulldog is a pure bred breed that goes straight back to bills experiments either.
I just thought it was worth a mention.

    All the best folks.
