yard set ups

Discussion in 'Dog Discussion' started by southrenman, Oct 19, 2008.

  1. we cant have setups like this in the u.k to many tree huggers but would you use a chain to just hold the dog or do you use a heavy chain to build muscle in there necks and i put my dog on chain when cleaning her out and she undone the snap on links so imagine it wouldnt be safe for a yard

  2. I weld the lap links while in a 6" vice.

No you dont use heavy chains to build musscle in a dog.
You use heavy chains in order to properly and safely contain them.

    Great post.

The chain I use for Bransen looks like this, but with only one clasp and a loop for the axle.

Hahaha, it is pretty flimsy but it does alright.

(He is never out unsupervised, though.)

Bransen just turned two in October.

    Why?

Just suprised he has not broken it yet. IMO those are only good for chain training.

Yeah I am actually surprised, too.
He won't be using it anymore though as it is winter now and our fence should be done soon.

My question is why put them on car axles. I mean ^^^^^^ looks really nice.
But when you put them out on a car axle a hevy chain and an un proper dog house it just looks so bad and cant be comfertabl for the dog

LOL bull-dog Whats your opinion of a proper set up?

  12. The chains are not heavy either bull-dog. You do realize this breed is often used in weight pull and can be perfectly comfortable and happy while pulling THOUSANDS of pounds of weight? A couple pounds of chain to them is like a grasshopper jumping on an elephant - it is just not even relevant let alone "uncomfortable" for the dog. If the chain set up is done properly a couple pounds of chain is not going to even be noticed....

well thaank you for the infomation.
And for me id rather do a kennel set up like tom garner has.
    jmo though.

  15. Garner only switched to a kennel set up after a restriction was put on chaining in his town. I would be willing to bet his dogs LOST out in the deal and now have access to LESS TOTAL LAND AREA than they did on their old set ups.

I do admire his kennel set up, but he only switched to it for a reason.

So many negatives are shared about a tether set up, but people often forget to share one of the most basic positives - inch for inch, foot for foot dogs will ALWAYS have more workable space on a chain set up that appears to be of "similar size" to a kennel set up.

I would also like to mention it is never the method used to confine a dog that causes harm - a chain on its own is an inert object - it is the amount of responsibility and care used by the person maintaining the containment method that determines if harm or neglect is caused.

Personally, I don't use any of these methods - I live in an urban area - but I also know just as well as the next educated person that it is not the method that causes issues, but the person behind it.

this is a very good thread as even seasoned dog owners can still pick up new ideas in this area. if you can get your hands on california jacks book. it has some great plans and kenneling info in it. i have an electronic copy maybe i could see if i can get some of that section of the book up here if no one thinks that would be to wrong.
