We have a pictures thread I thought we could use a videos thread. Figure it could be open to your yard, or old videos we all can dig up on youtube... Stp, wildside '93, Hammonds, wildside '99

Here is the first thing that popped into my head watching these videos....specifically I was just watching the STP yard video, as I had always been a fan of those dogs and dogs like Lukane. This of course is coming from someone with zero actual fast lane experience and has only seen these dogs go in yard accidents and accidents inside the house. IE my experience has been pretty much only that of a pet owner.

When STP goes up to individual dogs he is showing some of his best dogs...dogs with ability, mouth, air, gameness, etc. These are all the defining qualities, ideally, of these dogs. What I am seeing also are dogs that are just yelling out "play with me, run me, work me on the flirt pole, tug rope, lets play tug of war, fetch...whatever activity you wan't to do I am down for." The dogs are also saying "pet me, snuggle with me, take me in your car, do stuff with me....I will do anything to be with and please my owner."

My point is, and this point has been concurred in 3 of the 4 dogs I have owned is that the qualities that make great working dogs are also the qualities that make the dogs so much fun to own as pets, assuming you have the time and energy to do all the above things in a responsible manner. I suppose what I am saying is that there is a connection between what defines a great dog in the box and what makes them fun (like I said, if you have the time and ability to do the above things) to own as a pet.

Now SSdd, do note that I am asking a question, and most certainly not spouting off as some type of expert. This relationship is just something I have noticed in my limited experience. However it has also been noted by others, going all the way back to the Stratton books.

BTW, Ssdd, great collection from yards I have always followed. I read the Wildside book (way before Faron was busted) and have followed Hammonds since I bought my first dog more than 27 years ago. Of course the Mountain man is also legendary.

All depends. Best worker I've owned was cold as ice. He died in a yard accident and never touched the other. The one that killed him looks at you like you're the stupidest son of a bitch walking when you try to flirt pole him. He won't run a mill without another animal in the room to "chase".

Owning bulldogs is like owning a bunch of pissed off 3 year olds. Most will do what they please when they please but generally want their head scratched at the end of the day.

I don't feel their performance attributes are why they are so much fun for the average person. I think the fact they're one of if not the most ppl oriented breed to exist is.

People oriented...that is a good way to put it. My first dog would stand right in front of you while you were watching TV and just whine and whine until you let her up on the futon to cuddle in next to you. I am most certainly not an expert on performance, but out of my 4 dogs the one I got off Crazy legs probably had the best overall ability. Having said that, he would not work a flirt pole, tug rope, fetch, or do anything but run next to you on a bike. He nearly killed my female in a yard accident, would have if I had not gotten home in time to stop it. I have no idea how someone could condition him.

Throw his ass in water and make him swim and a lot of road work. With weight. He'd get where he needed to be. Emills work well for dogs that refuse to work a slat or carpet mill. They got no choice but to run.

Interesting...never thought about that. He loved to run next to the bike. Dog was naturally built like a bodybuilder. I actually made a comedy video out of him ignoring every opportunity to work.

Absolutely in reality working one is as complex or simple as a person wants to make it. Rocky beat Ivan drako's ass and all he did was run through some damn snow.

I had a female burn her pads off on a E-mill.
Would absolutely not run it or walk it.
Just put the brakes on and that’s where she stayed

You have to watch them closely on a emill. I got one that ran the belt off one. Never had a problem. I do high intensity to recover back to high intensity and never had one hurt themselves in anyway. I'm not saying you can't because any of the tools in the box can injure a dog but I always watch mine very closely as they run. My male puro all out runs one for an 1h-10m like it's nothing. It's not my perfect method I prefer the slat but some won't do it. The emill eliminates the I don't want to in the dog lol.

I really enjoy comparing the way dogs are trained to the way humans are trained. Lot of similar principles, but he dogs are generally the superior athletes.

Far superior. A 12 round boxing match is only 47 minutes long. I don't mean only like I could do it but a dog will go way further down deaths door than I believe a human will. A 50lb dog strength wise is said to be as strong as a 150lb man. That's a 150lb athlete not a couch potato. So I'd say they are far superior in that aspect of just how far they will go. Some all the way to deaths door. I don't know many humans like that. Wardog the only person I know personally that has no quit in him. You'll have to break his arm with that armbar. But even he isn't going all out for hours. A dog will.

    indeed you must watch them.
Many many years ago that happened with the pads being burned off.
I put her on the mill and everything looked to be ok.
I left the room to go start to make supper for my kids.
Came back 5-6 minutes later and smoked.
I felt horrible man. Hard lesson learned

From that day on she wouldn’t do any type of mill work. Slat, E, or carpet.
    75% flirt with her.

Emill would not be my first choice but it's a decent tool for those who refuse to work usually.

I've had dogs damage their paws from running and pavement. Gotta build them up. Some dogs like it more than others. That dog who didn't like other work would run and I would get tired riding he bike before he got tired. Female I had at the time would do any kind of work but didn't like running, had to praracticly drag her sometimes.
