  1. Ok guys i just wanted to start by thanking anyone that responds good or bad!
I have been doing some research and i think i have read way to much and can't make up my mind. I am at a point where i am gonna get a dog and have narrowed it down to 3 breeds Apbt,Amstaff, or American bulldog. My brother has a Amstaff that is just the best dog i have ever been around but just cant get him to give up the dog. She would die to protect my kids thats for sure. ok anyways as far as APBT which blood lines would you recomend? I want a dog that isnt the size of razors edge, gotti type dogs no offense but not my cup of tea. A more traditional size 30-60 #'s. Temperment and size is what i am after. Keep in mind i have two kids and we have a puggle that looks like a mini bulldog i will post a pic.(female) very good dog as she is just 14 weeks and has been very good. I know you guys will rip me apart but i am open to any response. Thank You for your time and response. And i know this is a APBT site but if you have any thoughts on the other 2 breeds let me know.

well the number one question is what are u looking for in a dog? What qualities and what purpose do u want the dog to serve

  3. I suggest you take a Staffie. I feel very strongly against an APBT as a choice for you. A Staffie will be much easier to handle and control.

  4. you might not want to hear this either, but I'd recommend a boxer for the situation you described. You have most of the looks you described above with (on average) a more docile creature. The temperment and the looks are there. I am of the opinion that most people that want bulldogs actually should have a boxer. Do continue to research though.

Another suggestion would be to get the opposite sex of the dog you have now.

I think you said your puggle was a female, so then get a male and the chances are much better that they will get along together.

  6. Appreciate your comments. Well i have been around bulldogs and like the way they are its not a looks deal. I like the dedication and respect that they show. They are on a different level than most other dogs.So i understand these dogs alittle better than my post would show. I have been around them but never looked into bloodlines and i didnt realize there were so many different lines. Thats some of the research i have been doing. Do i know what it takes to own one of these dogs yes hard work dedication. Just like this country was built on thats what i do. So i am not looking for a trophy i am looking for a dog that has a good temperment that is healthy. I want a dog that will protect my family that is great with my kids and just wants to please and earn his keep. be my buddy when i go fishing or hunting or to the race track. If this helps any great if not sorry.

if u want a dog to protect ur family don't bet on getting a real bulldog. The gamebred bulldog for the most part will not protect u or ur family, if u really want a family protector get urself an american bulldog, some of them have the same determination as apbt's and will also protect u with some training.

  8. well like i said they were high on my list. They are bigger that was the only down fall. And the reason i am thinking apbt is cuz i help my buddy train his and he is the great with the kids and just right there when you need him. He might be just a special dog as well. He just has a good sense of judgement about him. When we go to the show here in illinois the weight pull is just amazing. Its like when we are at the shop or the track hey follows every movement and anything i do. he is just right there. he is dedicated to his family. i respect that and i just love the loyalty. That might be a better word. anyways thanks again. i am in no rush i am searching for the right pup. maybe a amstaff might be the right one but i am keeping my options open and that why i am asking all these questions. thanks again fellars

What you are looking for has nothing to do with bloodlines! You need to look for a pup with parents that you know and like that have the qualities that you just descibed to us! Good Luck!

Have you thought of getting one from a shelter or maybe a bulldog rescue site? I know a lot of people don't reccommend getting a shelter dog. I have 4 throwaway dogs. Only one a pit. A little 40lb game dog. All were dumped out and or starved. We caught them and got them fixed and they are great dogs. The pit has a few issues but he is coming around. He has a lot of scars where it looks like he was fought or used as bait or something. A punctured eye, now healed, that still works. He has been beaten, shot at, and just had a all around no good life until we picked him up.

I also work at a humane society where there are several pits that will probably live out the rest of their lives there because no one wants them. One is a solid white red nosed female that is deaf but very sweet. The pit bull rescue people probably know their dogs well enough to know if they would do well with kids and other animals

A quick question...How do you know all this? And how do you know he is a "Game Dog"? Its things like this that are irritating as hell to me. Misinformed public blasting out terms and jargan that they have no clue about.

from just the few american bulldogs that ive been around,i would never recommend one for a family pet.they seem to be real jumpy and ended up being biters.

I wouldn't condemn a breed for the acts of a few. If that was the case our beloved breed would be up shits creek w/o a paddle.

  14. sorry guys i wasnt trying to stir up anything. I am just trying to get some recomendations and input. Knowledge is everything. just some direction Thanks again

If you're looking for a protection dog, I'd stear away from the bully breeds all together. We have enough problems without having our dogs and their cousins made into watch dogs. GSD's are perfect for that kind of thing. I didnt mean to come off harsh but you have to understand that sh!t gets old. No offense. DJ.

  16. yea and i wasnt clear either. i didnt want to write a page. I guess its not just a protection dog but one that would detour some if they thought about it. I see where you guys are coming from i am now leaning more toward a amstaff or american bulldog. a inside dog that will say hello if someone is there thats not wanted. They are my 2 most prized possesions and mean more to me than life itself. So i am a tradesman and sometimes have to work at night and so fourth just trying to cover a few things. I did like the critiscism it made me think about a few things.

    Hello heyyosteve!

Well, I hate to be the bearer of bad news but upon reading the first few posts of yours, I concur in the recommendation that the Boxer is really the dog for you. Here is why:

1: Gamebred APBTs are not good guard dogs. They may bark, but only a few will bite. Most of mine would watch me get stomped to death & not raise a whisker.

2: APBTs are a liability. If you DO get an APBT who would actually bite someone, you can be sued for it, even if the dog was in the right. For example, several years a go a man broke into a home & was bitten by the family's APBT. He sued & won. The family ended up paying for all his lawyer fees & medical bills!

And in today's day in age, not only could you get sued, your dog could get put down & you could get prosecuted for "harboring a dangerous animal!" And this goes for any "pit bull" type dog (read - APBT, AmStaff, Staffy Bull & crosses therof).

3: An APBT will NOT make anyone "think twice" about entering your home/property. In fact, APBTs DRAW 10x more riff-raff than they deter! Ask any breeder of pit bulls! He/she almost aways have to have some type of security system just to keep their DOGS from being STOLEN!

So in short, I'd say look at a Europen bloodline Boxer. Euro Boxers are awesome looking bullies who can be bad ass to the core. In fact, these dogs are so good at it that there are more Boxers in protection work in Germany than all the Dobermans, German Shepherds & Rottweilers COMBINED.

In closing, I do not recommend the American Bulldog as a home protector b/c they are too easily confused for pit bulls & the last thing we need is another "pit bull attack." Further, ABs are increasingly being included on BSL lists, whereas the Boxer is not nor will it likely ever be.

    Hope this helps! :)

I can only add that I agree with the above post. I also understood that you would be taking the dog lots of public places. I don't suggest that with the APBT as there could be encounters with other male dogs that could only lead to Possible trouble and the pit would be blamed no matter what. I know I will be bashed for that but I don't believe in taking an APBT places(other than a show) that they could encounter other dogs. They don't need doggy friends. They only need you the human.

  19. ABK & Scooter. Thanks for your input i appreciate it. I can see your point with the APBT. Its hard because my brother has a amstaff and she is with my kids and at all the places we go and she is by our side at all times. I wish i could just duplicate the bitch and bam i would have a very happy family thats for sure. She seems to fit in everything that we want and do. And thats why i was asking. OK guys we can put this one to rest. I will post some pics of what i decide in the future. Until then i am gonna hijack jade (amastaff) for awhile.
