Well homie not to argue but if you think more people fear the looks of a GSD and Dobie then a Rottweiler then idk what kinda Rott you have in mind...a Grown male GSD usually doesnt excede 85 or 90 lbs and Dobermans on average are about 70lbs...male Rottweilers on the light end are over 110lbs and they got some crunk along with big shiny white fangs..;)

Im not trying to talk down on the GSD or Dobie but if you want a dog that'll stop any man (or Men) mag light or bat or pipe or any kinda blunt weapon i'd get a Rottweiler..i had one as a child and a GSD too but as far as guarding ability the Rott takes the Gold in my book...its a powerhouse that wont hesitate to grab hold of someone at the first sign of a threat...

And besides what kinda family protector would let himself get surrounded? there bred to see a threat and react as soon as it becomes an apparent threat...the first person that comes in the house or fence isnt leaving in one peice...regardless of a thick blanket or maglight:)

I heard that most often a mali is not well recommended in a family situation due to its lack of a "off" switch and high prey drive. I have met a couple who had a mali and they said he was fine in a family situation, but I don't know if he came off of working stock or show stock...

i think you are all wrong the best guard dog is a mastiff and not just a normal mastiff such as bull mastiff, english mastiff.the breed is called a south african boerboel.these dogs are highly regarded as the best guard dog and have high level natural guarding instincts.in the past have had many breeds of dogs but now have had 1 of these myself and nothing compares to this breed of dog.check them out and see for yourselfs

If you want the best family protection animal get a real working German bred German Shepherd, not an American German Shepherd. If you really want the best. The way we protect our lines the Germans protect theirs just sa well.

Naustroms: Yes, it could be done to a GSD. But who wants to steal a GSD?? No one I know of! But there IS still a market for Rottweilers. I have never said the Rott wasn't a good protection dog. It is. But if you're looking for a dog to protect your family, why would you buy a dog that will ATTRACT thieves like the Rott & any bull breed will?? No one wants to steal a GSD or Dobie & 99.99% of people who will steal a Rott are terrified of a GSD or Dobie. Remember, they think GSDs are "PO-leece dawgs" & Dobermans are attack dogs! ;)

Samson1: I have had many guard dogs over the years to include Rottweilers. Yes, they can make good guard dogs, but as I mentioned previously, there is still a market for the Rott, making them a breed prone to get stolen (like my acquaintance's dog was).

As for how the dog was stolen, one fellow exposed himself, the dog went after him & after that the other men jumped the dog from behind. I don't care how bad your dog is, one dog vs. several armed men with a plan & the dog will usually lose.

TysonM: I have worked with both GSDs & Mals & for a family I will say GSD hands down. The GSD is more stable & manageable. Mals are also great man-stoppers, but they are very high drive, many are high strung & they can be unpredictable. Most of the Mals I saw would bite their handler as quick as they'd bite an intruder if they got amped up. A well bred GSD can do the same job as a Mal, but they're much more safe in a family setting. Mals are more for professionals like the military & police.

buk: I have used molossers for guard dogs as well (English Mastiff, Neapolitan Mastiff) & they worked out terribly. They did their job BUT ... they also attracted riff-raff TO my house due to their unique looks. I can't tell you how many thugs stopped at my house just b/c of my Neos. Now more people were frightened at my E. Mastiff, but I still had folks attracted to him. I have no doubt the Boerboel would be an awesome guardian. My worry would be it would draw in the people you wanted to keep out like my molossers did.

The bottom line is this - all the breeds mentioned would make good guard dogs hands down. I don't deny this at all. The only reason I champion the GSD & Doberman over the rest is due to the of the following reasons:

1: They're not from the bull breed family so if it bites someone you won't have to worry about the victim suing you or worse yet another "pit bull attack" headline.

2: They have a very good deterrent factor. People of ill intent almost always think GSDs are police dogs. Everyone has seen GSD K9s attack criminals. Same with the Doberman. The old myths about the Doberman's viciousness & use as an attack dog still persist among the criminal element & things like the recent Verizon commercial cement this to them.

3: They're not "attractive" breeds. They are common & recognizable to the public. No one wants to steal a GSD or Dobie like they would a high demand breed like a Rottweiler, a breed they could mistake for a pit bull like a Dogo, American Bulldog or Presa or a novel breed like a molosser. A GSD or Dobie isn't going to bring a thief much money, so most just leave them (& your house) alone.

    Again, JMHO on this.

    Blessings ...

ABK I can agree with part of that but what happens if somebodys there to do serious damage to you? not just steal some stuff and be frightened by the sight of a dog or its bark? what happens if you need your dog to stop this guy and he doesnt fear your dogs looks? im not saying GSD cant or that Dobermans cant but i would feel safer behind a powerhouse of a dog thats known for its fiercenss when it comes to FAMILY PROTECTION...Like i said im all for GSD and Dobermans as guard dogs i mean thats what there bred for but family protection is different...import Rottweilers are said to have the heart of a APBT when it comes to there loved ones as many have proven themselves and given there lives defending what they love...

sampson1 i couldnt agree more what you say.yes the germans stick to their german breeds, german shepherd, doberman etc.but wen you get people who are very serious in doing a crime and are well prepared and experienced at what they do a german shepherd doberman are not none as man stoppers as the bigger breeds of dogs are such as american bulldogs, boerboels etc.like previouisly stated the germans stick to there own breed but the south africans stick to the boerboels because these serious crimes do happen and they need serious dogs that have the power to physically hold a man down.the crime in sa is so bad they jack people in there cars homews etc and these dogs are like a national treasure there honestly i think these dogs are the way forward for protection

Actually, if either of you have noticed, the Rottweiler is a German breed also. :p

But do you know the #1 protection breed is in Germany? It's not the Rottweiler, or even the GSD or Dobie. It's the German bred BOXER!! The only reason I would never recommend a Boxer however is b/c it goes back to the bull breed thing.

You can recommend Rottie all day long & yes, they are good protection dogs. But I could never in good conscience recommend a dog to someone who will bring thieves TO your home, like a Rottweiler will.

Like I said before, no one wants to steal a GSD or Dobie. but they'll sho 'nuff steal a Rottweiler! And if the Rottie is all that, why aren't places like PDs & the military using them but instead use GSD, Dobies & Mals? I don't know about you but I think I'd want to use what the professionals use (GSD, Mals).

    Just a thought.

    Blessings ...

I've had 2 rotts and 1 gsd as a kid. Both rotts were bitches and great pets/guard dogs. We put Precious down at 14 and Ginger got hit by a car when she was about 4 or 5. Now that I think about it Precious was stolen a couple times when she was younger and my uncles had to steal her back. This was back in the 90s, she stopped getting stolen as she matured though.

The one gsd I had was one scary sob. We got him when he was maybe 2 or 3. He was my dog but he scared me way more than any rott (I was maybe 10 or 11 at the time) It might have been because they have that wolfish look. He was an escape artist so we had to keep him chained.

I really loved that dog, he ended up getting really sick and dieing. He was a great dog but a walking lawsuit. Very HA, no one but family could feed him.

One dog I would not recommend getting as a guard dog is a Boxer. I have seen those things get stolen regularly.

ABK the police and military use GSD and mals because there so athletic..there damn near impossible to get away from..lol and i can agree with the Boxer statement ive owned 2 and both were good guards...one was like Naus said his GSD was though a walking lawsuit..he was one of the most powerful and athletic dogs i ever owned..but it didnt take much to make him bite someone..

Alot good information here. The bottom line is you said family protection. Dont get any bully type breed it will bring negativity espically if you own pitbulls. Assuming you have small children then thats why the German working Shepherds are the best. No hip displaysia or health problems like our American bred (show) GSD. If there is no small children shorter than eye level to your protection dog the Mal. is better but they take a more experienced handler. I know a professional who trains GSD for Law enforcement his personal protection Dog is a 90-100lb German Bred Doberman. Now its up to you to figure what works best for your family. Good luck!

If you dont have small children get the Mal. If you have small children get a German bred working German Shepherd they dont have the health problems that the Americans do. Either way its gonna cost $$$$.
