A couple of vicious dog attacks in West Bloomfield have neighbors nervous, and pushing for an ordinance to outlaw the ownership of certain breeds of dogs.

At the center of the controversy is Ken Lenneman. He told 7 Action News, "The dogs jumped on my dog and bit him by the neck."

Mike Mulroy is pushing for the ordinance. He explained to the township board, "They went for the neck, and ripped it to shreds."

According to Lenneman, three rottweilers attacked his 1-year-old corgi Jack, and now other neighbors are concerned for their children.

Iana Mentzel explained, "Our children are at risk, our dogs are at risk, and we are at risk, and there is nothing that we can do."

Mulroy said, "I would like the ban to include any new pit bulls or rottweilers coming into the township."

But with so many kinds of dogs in the community, experts are urging the township board not to pass a law about specific breeds.

Mike Killian, of West Bloomfield Township, explained, "I think the issue of identifying a vicious dog is a much more practical application to this problem, rather than to spend time trying to identify a breed."

A final decision will be made at another meeting, but the board would like to see a drafted ordinance at soon as possible.

In the mean time, they want an investigation into the rottweilers that attached Jack. "The disturbing part about it is, I still run into the guy every day, walking his dogs in the neighborhood," Lenneman said. Copyright 2006, WXYZ. All Rights Reserved.

Wouldn't it be a little easier to target people who don't contain their dogs, rather than those who keep the wrong breed? Almost all of the attacks would be prevented if they had stronger leash and containment laws. Maybe require fence checks every 3 months for those with dogs over 40 lbs? Or we could neuter the vicious dogs, and preferably their owners. That way they'd mellow out and maybe think before they decide to let three large dogs wander the streets.

i love how 3 "confirmed" rotties were on the attack but the ban is pushing for pits to be outlawed too! thats utter bullsh*t and i know for a fact that do to strays and kids letting anything mate with anything, there are plenty of dogs out there with rottie markings but are no where NEAR being a rottie. and the same goes for pits too! this is so stupid!
i seen a bumper sticker the other day that said "punish the deed not the breed" and had a APBT sillohette (sp?) next to it...i like that a lot! :)

  5. I live in michigan, and IMO i dont think a bsl would go through in west bloomfield, they couldnt even get it to pass in detroit. I know west bloomfield has more stuck up snooty people in their city/ Township, but they do need to target vicious dogs, and uncontained dogs rather than pits bulls and rotties.

Doh! Rottweilers attack so they are gonna ban pit bulls? That will really help stop Rottweiler attacks! Also the story is so vague...were the Rottweilers on leashes? Did the Corgi die? This story is incomplete.
Ya know I had a girlfriend who was walking her landlords Maltese (3 of 'em) and her dogs were attacked by a Rottweiler. The Rott was being walked by a 12 year old boy, who could not contain his dog. A passing motorist stopped and "beat" the Rottweiler off with a gold club...My girlfriend had to go to the hospital for bruises and contusions because the Rottie knocked her down, repeatedly, while trying to get to the Maltese, which were all right by the way. Did she call for a ban on Rottweilers? No, she got the owners to pay her medical bills though...
