Info on a breed

Discussion in 'APBT Bloodlines' started by pit_collision, May 11, 2006.

  1. My name is Bobby and I have a 7 month, non-registered, pit. I was informed that she is a Colby Pit. She is buckskin with a white chestand has black markings around the mouth and eyes with longer fur than most pits, but she has all the other characteristics of a pit. If anyone has any information about this breed I would really appreciate it. Thank You

Without a responsible breeder and proper documentation there is nothing to guarantee the dog is a pure pitbull, let along a specific bloodline. Many times people claim their dogs are a certain line because they sell better. Enjoy the dog and be sure to spay her and don't breed an unknown dog.

    Kind Regards,

    B

She's probably a mix. A lot of people go around spouting "Colby" because it's one of the better known bloodlines. People used to stop me on the street when I was walking my stray telling me he was a Colby dog. There's no way to tell what blood your dog has by looking at them, but the long hair is a pertty good sign that she's mixed.

  6. This may sound like a stupid question, but what does byb mean? She probably is mixed but I looked into her a lil' more and discovered she has some Blueline in her, better described as a blue fawn. Her fur isn't but 1/4 in. long and like i said in an early forum she has all the characteristics of a full blood pit. I hope to post pics of her in the near future.

    Sincerely,

I looked into her a lil' more and discovered she has some Blueline in her, better described as a blue fawn.Blue is just a color. There is no "blue line". Blue is the result of the dilute gene acting on a black coat. There is no "Colby"-type pit bull. Colby is a bloodline of the American Pit Bull Terrier, it is not a seperate breed.

BYB means backyard breeder- a less than ethical or responsible breeder who peddles puppies to unsuspecting buyers.

Without papers from a reputable registry (ADBA, UKC, BFKC), there is NO WAY to determine a dogs bloodline, or even if it's pure. At 7 months, the dog is still a puppy- and most puppies generally tend to act the same. Hyper, energetic, driven, etc. Even pit bull mixes often behave like pure APBTs- my mutt sure does.

  8. I finally got some pics of my pit, they are more in my gallery, if anybody has any info on what kind she might be, I would really appreciate it because I tired of being told so many different things about her.

looks like a pit to me, but I hear if you breed a german pointer, and a lab, you'll have a dog that looks alot like a pit! anyhow, she's a good looking dog. like 14rock said, get her fixed, keep her on a leash!!! and feed her good food, and you'll have a friend forever. good luck.

She's pretty, but she looks like a mix. You can pretty much rest your mind with that fact, and stop worrying about her bloodline, LOL.

To answer the question about the breed in general APBT's are usually pretty animal aggressive mainly dog on dog but don't confuse this with human aggresion they aren't human agressive. But since yours is a mix she might have different tendencies. My older pit doesn't like dogs to much, but she's fine with my cat go figure. APBT's are wonderful pets when fully exercised and taken care of they are very loyal and have a strong drive to do whatever you want them to do. this my friend is why they excel in so many areas. Tracking, hunting, obidience, agility, wieght pull, shoultz hound Sp?, search and rescue, and therapy. These dogs are all around hard workers who would like nothing more than to do your bidding and be your best friend. They are awesome dogs I've been around these dogs my whole life and will attest to there versatility and drive.

  14. Thank you for replying, I'm glad you all like her. I knew she had to be a pit when I seen both of the parents, but the way I described her some people said she wasn't. I'm not sure if I want to spay her yet, I want to see what her litter would look like if i bred her with a shorter stalkier male. My uncle has a registered year old male that weighs about 100 lbs. and I'm not exagerating. I'll eventually have pics of him as well, when I aquire him. If I am not satisfied with the litter, I assure you she will be spayed and the pups will put given to good homes. I will only allow good, honest people have them. Once again, thank you for replying.

First off, you've been given excellent advice here. Unless you acquired your dog from a reputable, respectable, & honest owner/breeder who keeps accurate records of his dogs pedigrees & only gets his own dogs from the like, then you have NO idea what breed of dog you own.

A "pit bull" is NOT a breed of dog, but rather a generic term that refers to several different breeds & any mix involving these breeds. The breeds include the: American Pit Bull Terrier, American Staffordshire Terrier, Staffordshire Bull Terrier, Bull Terrier, & American Bulldog. As all of these breeds share very similar physical characteristics, there is no way to determine one apart from the rest (except the BT due to it's lovely egg shaped noggin of course ;) ) without documented & accurate proof of the dog's history/pedigree.

(& don't get me started on the term "pit". I have gladly posted the definition of a "pit" & to put it bluntly, it's a hole in the ground.....NOT a dog)

And pitcollision, NO ONE can decide that your dog is a "purebred pit bull" just based on looks alone. Like I said, for one, a "pit bull" is not a breed of dog & 2) there are just too many other breeds & many more mixed breeds that share similar characteristics to make that assumption. And the fact that the breeder told you it's "a Colby" makes me 100% sure that he has NO idea what he's talking about & is just using a famous name he's heard of in the past as a way of peddling dogs for higher prices.

And to be honest, I really don't even want to get into the fact that you would like to become the next uneducated back yard breeding puppy peddler all b/c you want to see what the pups would look at. My advice is to look at www.pbrc.net or www.petfinder.com & you can see for yourself what all the pups would look like--as they sit in a cage either waiting for a home or for the kindness of death. All you would be doing is bringing in more mixed breed dogs into this world that are unneeded & very obviously unwanted.

And as for the 100lb "pit bull", well, I can assure you that dog is a mix of some sort. There is no way for a properly bred APBT, AST, or SBT to end up that size. It's just another mixed breed dog given the name "pit bull" to make it sound cool & so the breeder of it could sell it for lots of money.

Please, please, please don't be a part of the problem. Help us to fix the problem.

  16. I know that "pit" is just a name given to the dogs. I also know that it took over thousands of years to actually get the American Pitbull Terrier, American Bulldog, etc., and as for a "pit" being 100 lbs. it can be, if you don't believe go to http://www.somesite.com/, look at their dogs, and then correct me if I am wrong. I may not be an American Pitbull Terrier specialist, but I basically know what I am talking about.

Of course an APBT will be 100+ IBs when you mix it with Dogue de Boudreaux!

Yes, by thugs & wanna-be's who want to sound "cool" when trying to gain respect by saying "hey man, check out my pit".

As for the rest, I strongly suggest you do some research into the breed standard. I will refrain from posting any thoughts on the link you posted as we as a forum have decided that it's best to let the owners of those site be here to defend themselves (if they can).....we are not here to bash specific kennels. However, we ARE here to promote the education of the breed's past & present, to promote responsible ownership, & God knows to stress/promote responsible breeding (i.e. breeding as close to the breed standard as possible......& 100+lb dogs aren't even close to being a physical standard).

collision i hate to say this so bluntly but your wrong there slim. 100lb dogs are not true to form and judging by the questions you have had to ask and understand many here asked them once themselves you do not know what you are talking about. But you have time to learn. Sit back and read a bit youll pick somethings up along the way.

Do us all a favor dont breed your dog. I know your going to do what you want but make sure your educated first and for your dogs sake dont breed it before 2. Be patient and open minded and you will learn a lot from the folks on here about the breed you have chosen.

  20. I am sorry for any inconvenience I have caused on this site. I assure you I will read up more on my history of the breed. Thank you all for your help so far, I really appreciate it. Again, I am sorry for any inconvenience.

    Sincerely,
