I am just not crazy about leerburg training to begin with,,leerburg could tell me the sky was blue and I would still look up

Yes I have seen it......not sure it would work with a pit bull, but it might result in both dogs taking a hell of a spin! If no break stick is available my choice of separation is O2 deprivation (which I recently used successfully). At some point most breathing creatures will make O2 a priority, I would only try this with a Pit as most other dogs would redirect in a heart beat......thoughts any one?

I have actually seen this done before, although, not with pit bulls.
For a lesser dog it works, but don't think the dog won't redirect, and
come after the jackass holding his hind legs in the air!

*sigh*

You have to remember folks, this guy is not talking about breaking up a fight between 2 pit bulls. He is talking about breaking up Shepherds or Malinois, which are horses of a totally different color.

While some of you might not like Leerburg, what he says has some merit. Mals & Sheps aren't bite & hold dog-focused breeds like the pit bull. If you use pit bull methods to break up 2 Mals, you'll break up the dogs, but you'll also probably come out looking like a piece of swiss cheese.

Just a thought ...

What are your issues with Leerburg?

I like Leerburg and I have learned a lot there, but like ABK says they are a forum of protection dog trainers for the most part. There are many knowledgable people there, just like here, some have very strong methodologies some are more open, just like here....bottom line for me is learn all you can, modify and adapt if you have to and never turn down the experience of someone who has lived it.

Here's his response to using a "breaker bar":

I have an article on my web site explaining a safer way (if there is a such a thing) to break up a dog fight without getting bit. This article was written from my experience breaking up fights between German Shepherds or other breeds of police service dogs.
Once or twice a month I get e-mails from Pitt bull owners telling me that I am way off base on my methods. They all recommend that I include information on the use of a breaker bar. This article contains information on that subject.

There are a couple of issues that need to be made before I get into this article.

1- I like pit bulls as a breed. I have seen some great pits and if they did not have such a terrible reputation they would make excellent service dogs. Unfortunately I do not thing the public would accept them

2- I think that people who train for, endorse, encourage or promote dog fights with Pitt bulls are nothing less than red neck ass holes. These people are the scum of the earth. They are pieces of shit. I do not often use this language on my web site but I want to make my views on these pukes very clear. I think people convicted of dog fights should spend many many many years in prison.

I do not agree with these people who say that all dog fights should be broken up with a breaker bar.

When pit bulls fight they grip the other dog and lock onto them. They have extremely powerful jaw pressure and in many cases are not aggressive to humans - although this is not always the case which is confirmed by the number of people that have been killed by this breed.

When you talk to pit fighters (and I get this from their e-mails) they recommend standing over the dog, (with it between their legs) and using the breaker bar the way you see it being used in the photo below.

It would be a serious mistake to try this maneuver if you were trying to break up GSD’s or for that matter most other breeds. When dogs that are not trained to fight get into a serious dog fight they really get strung out. When they are pulled apart most will turn and try and attack the person that has just pulled them out of or away from the fight. They do this instictually. That’s how many people get bit.

So with that in mind, if you put a dog between your legs and plan on using a breaker bar - you had better be ready to go to war with your dog when he releases (or is released) from the jaws of another dog.

ABK - it would be safe to assume he was including Pit Bulls as the first pic you see is of two pit bull type dogs fighting.

You are right, probably not the best choice of pics for this segment...but I get the impression from that forum there is no great fondness for the pit bull, could be wrong just the vibes I get, don't care there is still a lot of great training info there......

I think it makes sense, if the dog is a pit bull (especially those trained to fight) use the method described (a break stick), if you try this method on a Mal or GSD you are gonna get torn up when the dogs are separated.

Actually defend, he does, at least on this point. I don't know about you, but I have broken up or tried to break up Shepherds & Dobermans as well as various mixed breeds & what he says is right. Once separated from their foe, in the heat of battle non-pit bull dogs will bite anything close to them & that includes you! The LAST place you want them is between your legs!

As for the picture, it means nothing. I'm sure it was used b/c it's a lot easier for him to find a pic of 2 bulldog-like dogs fighting than a pic of 2 Sheps or 2 Mals.<IMG

as you might know other breeds wont fight for too long maybe for what five minutes? or 10? not even, one eventually will run so why risk you self to get injured? as for pulling the dogs legs when theyre fighting they will probobly get mad and try to bit you to keep on fighting

When my two non-pit bull dogs get in a fight (doesn't happen too often but they're both bitches so it's a risk) I just turn the hose on them. Wouldn't trust it to work with an APBT of course, lol, but it works for my Doberman and mutt just fine.

Maybe sticking your finger in their butt would work because they'd be too stunned to redirect. lol.
