I have been wanting, for a long time, to open up a PitBull Rescue around the area I live in. I know and understand the breed and I know that, not in a few areas, but everywhere these dogs are being abused, mistreated, and murdered for human entertainment. Its disgusting. I was wondering if anyone knows what I would have to do to start a rescue up. I know the essentials...land, medical, housing, permits, etc etc...but I dont know how to go about getting the permission to start a rescue. If anyone knows of any info please let me know. Thanks

I understand, agree, and commend what you are attempting to do...yet, I question the validity of your statement above, not everyone with these dogs is harming, abusing, mistreating and "murdering" them for human entertainment. Some of us love these dogs for what they are...the American Game Dog! Good luck in your quest.

I didnt say "EVERYONE" was doing this to these dogs. I know that there are millions on top of millions of people that love these dogs for what they are and thats great. But, there are just as many people that have these dogs for wrong reasons. I have one and plan on getting another and honestly they are the best dogs in the world...they are beautiful, loyal, funny, and all around great dogs. And I just think that even the ones that are not owned by people who actually love them and respect them for what they are need a chance to have that as well. Thats the whole reason I am wanting to do this. My dog was a bait dog when I came across her. And she is an awesome dog. So sweet. I cant see how anyone could of ever mistreated her. And now shes loved, respected, and spoiled rotten. Shes very happy and I want to give that to dogs that need it.

Your idea for a rescue is not only a great idea, but a necessary one. Most shelters won't adopt out any of the "fighting" breeds, which shows their blatant ignorance of this subject. One thing though, you might get farther with a little more understanding of the breed and its history/background. Truth be known, the breed as we know it would not be, if not for its fighting past. I'm not saying I condone the fighting that is widespread, but also won't condemn the matching of dogs as easily as some who may not totally understand the true nature of it. But I wish you all the best.:)

  5. For u to go out and do something like this u would need to have one hell of a presentation and bring that up to ur city council. A petition would probably help u too along the way because u have to remember this is something u will not be able to do alone u will need the backing of ur comunity, to win the city council over. Do plenty of law research for ur city and state on the topic. It is a good idea and i commend u on it and wish u the best of luck!

I'm curious...what are the "RIGHT" reasons to have these dogs?? I'm not knocking anything you have said or anything like that, just curious where your mind set may be at. I can agree that these dogs can make GREAT pets, GREAT show dogs, GREAT anything you ask them to be dogs, but at the end of the day, they are still instinctively driven on one aspect, and thats being the American Gamedog. I would not own a labrador, as ask him to stop retrieving, as you are taking his instincts and stripping them. Then same CAN be said for our great breed.
They are in fact OUTSTANDING dogs and I would never consider any other breed. Folks that have these dogs and abuse them, and folks that don't understand these dogs for "what they are" is what is ruining this breed today.
Again, good luck in your venture and I only hope it works out for the best for you and for the dogs. I do hope that as you hope to open a rescue, that you have in effect a spay and neuteur policy so that folks that rescue the dogs will not add to the growing number of unwanted pups that will continue to fill up rescues and ASPCA shelters and such. Good luck.

  7. That is great, first you do not need permission from anyone, you can do fostering to start and go from there. you are great for doing this. It depends on the state you are in. You can connect to a rescue that already has a tax ID for tax exempt. .... Look up the laws in your state, Good for you
