Chihuahuas and pits...

Discussion in 'Introductions' started by Michelle42706, Jun 5, 2006.

  1. It was so good to find this forum! I learn just from reading. I want to give special thanks to Rockstar! A month ago a 6 months old pitbull "found me" while she was wondering around the streets with a rope around her neck. I was going to look for a good home for her but she was so sweet and obedient, that I couldn't help fall in love with her. The thing is that we also had two mix Chihuahuas, 2 years old who were not too happy about her. Maggie was very good and patient with them (they kept growling at her at first). I went through pitbull forums hoping to find someone with a similar situation... (I knew that if I went to a Chihuahua forum, they would probably tell me to get rid of the "bad" pitbull!!!) (Many people don't know...) I noticed that ROCKSTAR had a Chihuahua among his pits! I wrote to him and he gave my "shaking, concerned heart" some good advice!

A month later, I'm happy to report that things are working out very nicely. I've even seen them drink from the same water bowl and lie down on the floor next to each other...

People like me really need people like you! Thank you for this forum full of good advice and all kinds of information!

I am glad every thing is working out for you. I have seen dogs that get along great but as soon as they start to share food bowls it can get ugly quick. Especially with a little dog(s).

Well, good luck her, post us some good pictures. Just watch out with sharing the bowls, thats one thing I wouldn't go to far with, if you know what I mean ;)

I got 2 chihuahua's. And some pit bulls and the pit bulls know better then to nip at the chihuahua's. My chihuahua's will go and eat out of the pit bull's bowls outside in there chain area and the pit bull's just look at them like DAMN. But if any other dog came up to my pit bull's then they wouldnt think twice bitting the dog. So i let my chihuahua's out in the back yard knowing that nothing will happen.

He does, lol, but Harley(my Chi) is second in command(at least in his little mind). Mercedes is the alpha dog, I think its nice to have a female in command..lol

  9. Wow! What a treat for me to read all your postings! Thank you! I'm amazed CB to hear that the Chis can actually eat from the pits food bowls! wow! Water is one thing...but food!? That's one thing I've been training EVERYONE on, not to mess with each other's food! I didn't want any problems... From day one I stood in the middle (that's right I'm the top "B"!!) At first they tried, a couple of days later they would "look"...now they just go to their "stations" when they see me getting their food (LOL) and they don't bother each other. They're so smart... I'm just trying to be smart enough for them! So I can train them right and they can learn to respect each other (or else! those are my rules!) and so far it's going very well...

What is it with bully owners having Chihuahuas'(lmao)? They must be good protectors of the bullies. It seems you got your hands full. This is a great place to learn about any breed I would say. Take good care of those dogs and don't let that pit out of the Chihuahuas' site.

  11. i don't know but my homeboy has 6 pit bulls and 2 chihuahuas and I have 2 pit bulls and a tea cup chihuahua... the all get along great on all aspects and my chihuahua see's the pit's as her big brother's... it's cute really :)

  12. I have a pomeranian and a pitbull, and currently they are playing together on my bed. :)

Sounds like our story, we had a boy chihuahua and one day as I was driving I SAW a guy dump big girl, I had a split second to decide if I wanted to chase him or get her out of the road...of course I picked her up. We looked for a home for her for a month or so which was just long enough to fall in love. We always supervise them playing, and in the morning before I leave I feed them seperately but we have NEVER had a problem. They sleep together at night and follow each other everywhere.

Since we are on this subject, has anyone had dogs that got along and then suddenly decided they didn't like each other anymore?

I have five Pit Bulls and two Shar-pei. I have also had many other dogs over the years and have never had a problem. I never let other dogs around new puppies as the mother may react and that wouldn't be fair to expect her not to. Believe it or not Bue Bue is the top dog now. She even rolls the male Shar-pei and Pit on their backs in play. I may try her on the sled as she is very strong. Never seen one used in pulliing but they have the muscle and bone mass for it. I am sure the Chinese used them to pull carts at some point in history as they are strong and stout dogs. Any way no flip modes to report.

My pits got along when they were younger. Now I can get Halo to get along with Dozer but I can't get Chyna to get along with either of them. They always fight with each other so I keep them seperated. Folklore and Fever are still young they get along great. But all I have right now is pits.

  16. Chia Pit, that's a cool story, thank you for sharing it. Goodbyexgirl, I have a visual in my head of your two dogs playing on your bed! How cute! Do you have pictures? I'll look for your gallery.

I was wondering if anyone knows the difference on the "roll over" issue. I know it's a sign of submission, but I read somewhere something about the "top dog roll over" (??) Sometimes when Maggie (pit) is resting on the floor, Rosie (Chi mix) comes up to her and puts her butt right up her face waiting for Maggie to sniff! Maggie then does some sniffing while Rosie stands there with her tail wagging, then Rosie rolls over for Maggie to sniff her on this position. I've seen Maggie look away when Rosie has rolled over "right on her face" and Rosie started touching her face with her paw like saying "hey! right here! you know what to do!" To what Maggie (sweet big thing that she is) turns her face back to Rosie and sniffs her privates and then they're done. This seems to make Rosie happy (?) and it doesn't look submissive at all, it's like Rosie is telling Maggie what to do and Maggie follows her lead.

Rosie used to do this to her brother Lucky too, just the way she's doing it with Maggie. Anyone knows the difference between submissive roll over and this one? Have you seen it too?

Just look at their heads to see the difference in size, Lucky looks bigger than what he is. This was during the first week of Maggie arriving home. He was claiming this space and Maggie ignored him while chewing a stick. So he got up and "sat" on Maggie, she didn't even move... He got tired of being "ignored" and ended up taking a nap right next to her! I don't think she ever noticed what Lucky was trying to do. She acts so natural around them. (Now they just lie next to each other)

I had two wonderful female bulldogs that would play all day together, but the day came that we were skinning a deer and one of my friends who had no idea of what he was doing threw a deer leg out in the middle of them, and... from that day on, they never got along. In the end, the eventually killed each other. Two of the best dogs I had. In retrospect, I was totally ignorant on how to keep them secure. These dogs arent like labs. I didnt know about the axle and swivel thing. I had broken chains, broken runner cables, etc. Now, most would say that I am over doing it, and I really dont care. I do know this, a few more dollars spent and I can go away from home and not worry about what I will find when I come home.

We also have a teacup long haired chia. He weighs one pound now@6 months. My pits want to play with him so bad, but one paw place on his back would break it. So, I make the big ones lay down and the chia will come and bite their lips and play like pups do. drives the big ones nutz, but gotta look out for the little one.
On a side note, I bout pooped my pants when I found out how much that little dog(which is half the size of a ginee pig) cost!

I know what you mean, my two play chase, the funny thing is, Paco chases Big Girl (She prides herself on being fast and loves to be chased) and they do the puppy "loud growl fake bite" game. But I am always nervous that a game of play is going to turn serious one day and Pacos 4 lbs is no match for Big Girls 60 lbs. One day she picked him up and moved him to where she wanted to play and I freaked out. Luckily she hasn't done that since. However in no way has she ever shown any agression towards our Chihuahua but my husbands sister brought their 4 month old Rott over one day and she went after that poor little thing with pure business on her mind. I realized that matter how you raise them, there is a certain amont of instinct that can't be changed and so I started coming to this site to educate myself more.

Well congrats to me and my wife.:p We just got a free Yorkie with UKC papers and all shots. He is 4 months old and his name is Petey. He's the most energetic dog I have seen thus far. We got him for free because my cousin neglected him. He had fleas so bad that the feces from the fleas had become tangled in his coat, so I had to shave him bald, give him a flea bath and some antibiotic creme. He snaps at my bully ocassionally, but she knows better than to snap him in two. He is a mean little guy. Now I'm a memeber of yorkietalk.com.lmao. There are so many different breeds of these little dogs, I'm still learning them. I can't wait for his coat to grow back in.
