Hi Everyone? I have a question? Is there a such thing as a dog being to soft like to of a wimp? My male is 8months old and he's like a big girl he's scared of things.like for example if he's in the yard and he hears noise he runs to the door and wants to get in the house. He never barks. i dont know how to explain it its pretty hard but hes like a big baby. and I want to stop it. I guess he's so used of me being around him and me being with him. And i dont really like to have him tied out in the back yard because I live in Chicago not thats its a bad place but people steal dogs here. and they mainly go for pitbulls i guess to fight them (young people). So if im not back there or looking out the window hes not outside by himself. only when im around. Becuase i know outside there insticts (dont know how to spell it) can kick in and he will learn to bark and just become bravier.I dont want him to be human aggresive or anything like that. just to not be soooooooo friendly to anyONE because thats how he can get stolen easily. And here in chicgo alot of people have pitbulls and they use them as guard dogs/alert dogs and how do they do that. becuase i know pitbulls were not bred to be human aggresive. any advice would be greatly appreciated.thanks to everyone.and what a great site to learn from.

  2. is he scared of all kinds of loud noises? Also does he get spooked up by lots of stuff he shouldnt? I dont know your dog , but it seem to me that he could have some nerve issues. I am not trying to bash on your dog or anything so dont take it wrong. If you are real worried about have temperment test done on him and see how solid he he is. They include lound bangs and noises in it. I just saying he could have some nerve problems but I cant say for sure seeing how I have never been around your dog.

he's not like super scared of things he will and has gone to check out on noises when he hears them. But sometimes hes just a wimp.lollol. Its hard to explain him ive really never tested him with a loud loud noise.

He is just a pup. When my dog was around 7 or 8 months old he used to get along with other dogs and things like people knocking or dogs growling or thunder scared him. Now he hates other dogs except one dog and if another dog so much as raises their tail to him he will instigate a fight. He doesn't mind thunder and he will sound the alarm if someone barks. Give him some time he will get over it.

He may have had some unpleasent experiences that you are unaware of. In this case, you need to focus on socialization ( bring him out and about, trying to slowly encourage new things, but you must keep it a good experience, don't be pushy ).

Your dog is also young, he may grow out of this, but he does sound a bit more nervous than normal.

It is also likely that this is just his in-born temperment. Dogs are not machines, you can't take any dog and make it do everything you want. They are born with their own individual personalities and perhaps this dog was born with "poor nerves" a dog who is natrually nervous. You can shape a dog's behavior to a degree, but they are what they are, just like people.

Yea i understand what you guys are saying. Im guessing its because i just expect more out of him. Because before i really got into this breed all you heard is pitbulls being agressive and biting people thats all the news talked about..and i guess i would like for him to be a O.K. guard dog a good dog but a good guard/alert dog. I guess i just have to wait for him to become older and more mature and see how he turns out. Thanks everyone

  7. Well if you was wanting a guard dog you should had chose a diff breed. APBT's are really not very good guard dogs.

    He's young, yet.

As he ages some, the traits of his personality may become more definitive, and this "skiddishness?" may lessen as he becomes more self assurred.
If in fact, it remains a part of his personality, i.e., he frightens easily, seems nervous, or edgy, or acts "whimpy", realize this, and train him accordinally: socialize him, slowly though, so as to not reinforce his fears. Speak and act calmly in situations. He'll be picking up a lot of signals from you. If you act like things aren't a "big deal", he will sense that, and hopefully, start to act in a less apprehensive manner. Just go slow, imo, and let him learn to trust.
    Good luck!

let him grow to be a mature dog,,alot of dogs are like this when they are young,,take him with u places so he gets exposed to all kinds of stuff,,more importantly do not pet him and comfort him when he is acting scared,,this will only reinforce that behavior,,he will take it as u are praising him for his behavior,,tell him to knock it off and take it like a man

  11. If he tucks his tail when things scare him you can also try holding his tail up. It make help be more confident of himself
