When breeds are started there is always crossing of different breeds or selective breeding so technically most breeds are mutts. APBTs are now a set breed of their own and adding other breeds in now is not helping. If there was a better fighting dog out there and they introduced that into APBT breeding than they'd be improving the breed as the creators were but how is adding guarding breeds who don't fight making a better fighting dog? It doesn't matter where they came from they're here now and they're a thing of beauty.

How long ago was that c. knight, lol. Some people have no idea of time, changing a breed for even 5 years can yeild another (seperate) breed than what you started with. Considering our dogs have been bred within "families" only for close to 200 years, I dont see your argument as valid.

I was wondering how long it would be before someone mentioned Chevy is a MUTT.

Being something of an historian of the breed the idea that the origin is a "mystery" is a bit off base, to me at least . The modern correct "Pitbull" is a direct desendent of the old baiting Bulldog. Hence the phrase "honest bulldog". A touch of terrier was bred in to make the dogs smaller, quicker and give wind. Note the old Richard Stratton story where a Pitbull named Lion gets loose and ends up in a cow pasture holding a grown, fierce Bull down with a nose hold.

Overdone dogs would not have the agility to do Bulldog/Pitbulldog type work.

  4. still not a true gamedog, way to over done and squatty.i am so tired of bluff people trying to convince true APBT owners that their dogs are pits or are the new wave bulldogs for this generation.when infact they are nothing but mongrels who are riding the wave of our dogs name, just sickens me.and it shows no signs of stopping anytime soon.

Anyone have a picture of Whopper? I think that in itself is enough to prove that he's about as much APBT as my cat is.

I HAVE AN HONEST QUESTION FIGHTING IS ILLEGAL SO NO ONE CAN PROVE THAT APBT ARE LIVING UP TO THERE STANDARD. SO WOULDNT BREEDING THEM WITH GUARD DOGS OR ANYTHING THAT THEY CAN ACTUALLY PROVE THERE GOOD TO CONTUNIUE TO BREED BE SOME WHAT HELPFUL???

Oh Brother, crossing a fighting breed with a guardian breed is stupid. Guard dogs have a natural insint to go after people when danger is near. Add that with the drive of a fighting dog and you got a mess. The apbts temerment is rock soild, it shouldnt be crossed with anything.

I agree with what mercepitdog said. Think of the drive of a game-bred dog mixed with protective and human aggressive tendencies. Also they are not calling them mixes or trying to create a new breed, they are making deformed guard dogs out of our breed. Also, even though fighting is illegal that doesn't mean people don't do it.

Thank you! I never saved any pics of him, but it gets under my skin a bit when people are pushing Whopper dogs as APBT. (And yeah, I always come back to Whopper when people are acting like its only the UKC that registers ugly dogs as APBTs.) :D

Whopper is (I think) a Dogue de Bordeaux/American Bulldog cross that was registered with the ADBA for weight pull purposes. From what I heard, he was never supposed to be bred, but when the guy who owned him died, other folks started breeding to him and now there's a whole line of "Pit Bulls" based on him. Very big in the weight pull circuit.

Ahh... that Whopper. That's just sad. Not a bad looking dog though (as a AmBull/Douge mix).
