Who likes rabies? Not me! Here is just a taste of what we can expect as a result of our dear "pit bull bans". All other reasons to oppose BSL aside, this is the real biggie, and there will be more.

This is very important information and has been verified!!!

http://www.dfw.com/mld/dfw/14625342.htm Three treated for rabies exposure By
TRACI SHURLEY STAR-TELEGRAM STAFF WRITER A pit bull puppy that was sold out
of the back of a pickup in a Decatur parking lot about three weeks ago had
rabies, and three people are now being treated for rabies exposure, the Wise
    County Sheriff's Department said Friday.

Authorities are looking for the person who was selling puppies in the
parking lot of either the Wal-Mart Supercenter on U.S. 287 South or the
nearby Tractor Supply Co. The buyer doesn't remember the exact date, but it
was in late April or early May, according to a news release.

The infected dog bit its new owner and his
17-year-old sister this week. The two, along with a toddler who was exposed
to the puppy's saliva, are being treated for rabies exposure, said Sgt.
Cathy Sides, the Wise County animal control officer.

The buyer did not get the seller's name or where he lives, Sides said. The
buyer did see the man sell at least one other dog, she said.
The pickup is a late 1980s or early 1990s model Ford that may be dark blue
and is rusted. The puppy probably contracted rabies from a skunk, Sides
said. Infected skunks are known to attack litters of puppies or kittens, she
said. Authorities don't know whether the puppy was infected before or
    after it was sold.

"That's why we're trying to find these people," Sides said.

The puppy's new owner took it to a veterinarian this week when it began
behaving strangely. Rabies was suspected, and the puppy was euthanized
Thursday, Sides said. Its head was shipped to the Department of State Health
Services in Austin for testing. The positive results came back Friday,
    Sides said.

The new owner, his sister and the toddler will begin a series of shots
immediately. That treatment includes one injection of rabies immune globulin
and five injections of rabies vaccine, said Doug McBride, a spokesman for
the state Health Department. The doses are injected into a patient's arm
    over 28 days, he said.

A Houston teenager died last week of rabies contracted from a bat that flew
into his bedroom. Doctors believe he was bitten several weeks before he
showed symptoms, according to news reports. The typical incubation period
for rabies is three to eight weeks, McBride said.

Sides said officials recommend that buyers of any animal get contact
information from the seller and immunization records for the animal.

I believe they found all the other pups and none had rabies , but never found the seller if I recall the rest of the story correctly.

My question is...who in their right mind would not get the sellers name? I still know who sold me Phantom and I have her phone number...Its just something that should be given?

You hit the nail on the head. Since pitties are banned or restricted by many local governments, you can expect more and more sales to be transacted by shady people involving pit mixes at best who don't want to leave a paper trail. It's called the "Iron Law of Prohibition".

Not making the coraltation between these subjects. Texas already has laws that require you to maintain rabies vacinations on your pets or live stock.

Where does the BSL play into this?

Why in the hell would anyone want to buy puppies out of the back of a truck especially in a Wal-Mart parking lot??????

BSL forces people who breed pits underground. They don't get their shots because they don't want to have a paper trail which gets their dog ultimately taken from them. Dogs don't get vaccinated and get exposed to rabies in some backwoods unmanaged "kennel", get sold out of the back of pickups, exposing people and other dogs.

I'm not saying that's what happened in this instance in particular, I'm just saying it is a stellar example of why BSL is ridiculous. The more the dog is litigated against, the more attractive he becomes to the consumer because he becomes more valuable. As he becomes more valuable, you will see more and more backyard "pitbulls" being bred by reckless idiots who don't take care of their animals (or vaccinate them), they just want to jump on the "pitbull bandwagon" and try to earn some cash.

luvinbullies, i am another georgian...up here in canton about 25 mins north of atlanta. i have seen WAY too many animals sold in wal mart parking lots... ch. HOG05 you would be surprised just how much it happens! lol, i had a little mexican kid actually put a puppy in our shopping cart from the front door when i was pregant with my son!! i went to give it back and he and his mom started walking away with me holding this pup!!! i was like "hello, i obviously have a bigger demand on its way, i cant take a puppy!" and they just kept walking. luckily another guy stopped them and i handed the pup back....i can only imagine what the dogs future was, but that wasnt my problem. it was very sad.

Easy now....your scenerio is a lil far fetched and your making a mountain out of a mole hill....b/c it was labled as a "pit bull"

There are lots of breeds that are peddled from a parking lot....this Isolated incedent will not lead to any BSL in North Texas.

I've muddled up my point to you somehow. I'm not saying this incident will lead to BSL in north Texas- I'm saying BSL can (and will) contribute to these types of incidents. The ones making the mountain out of the mole hill are the BSL supporters, I am just stating this incident as yet another obvious argument against BSL. I don't know where you are from, but I know for a fact in my area every redneck in the county wants a pit-or something halfway resembling one. If BSL were implemented in my city, these same idiots would consider themselves owners of a rare commodity and their idiot friends would want puppies from their dogs, and shotty kennels without vaccinated dogs would pop up. Hell, shotty kennels are all over the place now that have questionable care, I'd hate to see what would happen if "pits" around here were forced deeper into the woods.
I know I come across a wee bit excitable, but please don't misinterpret what I'm saying. I'm not yelling "fire!fire!BSL!" I've been writing to commisioners for a long time that BSL would lead to human exposure to unheathy dogs with untraceable backgrounds, and I'm just offering a case in point.

There is No doubt the importance of vacinating your pet or livestock...esp here in Texas. This is a public health issue not a breed specific issue. If anything it as brought awareness to the folk that do not vacinate annualy and the state of Texas does allow most counties if not all to admin a 3yr rabies vaccine.....breed has little to do with vaccinating ones animals

I will stand against any type of breeder regulations and state requiments to legaly breed any type of animal in the US.....Even if it allows these breeders that have no regard to animal welfare or the issues behind the poorly bred animals they produce. We do not need to implicate stronger laws......They already can not enforce the laws they have in place.....and its not due to lack of man power. They are focusing on the wrong type of laws...Infact some of them should be overturned IMO.

You want to do somthin good for your comunity, put together a free or low cost vaccine clinic at your local feed stores. 1 a month or every 3 months

I agree with you 100%, Simms- this is certainly a public health issue, one that can be potentially worsened by government laws and regulations i.e. BSL.

Don't you agree people in Denver find it more difficult to get their pit bulls rabies vaccinations?

  13. simms

    simms CH Dog

Unfortunatly yes, for the folks in Denver.

I will not compromise for one issue to bide time for another....I say squash them all.
