How on earth do you stop your dog from swimming in her water bowl?

Discussion in 'Dog Discussion' started by FearlessKnight, Jul 18, 2006.

  1. This is actually very funny. We have and have had many dogs, but never a situation like this one. It is rather amusing though it too is frustrating. One of our dogs thinks her water bowl is a swimming pool...any ideas? We have put her water where she can just barely reach it but she still seems to find a way. She has a concrete water bowl soooo...can anyone help out on this?

I'm falling out of my chair over here!
I got nothin', but I share your problem. Natas (our senior) has always done the same thing. She starts off almost like a boat propeller starting up with her front feet: Real slow at first then gaining stride in a digging motion-
    Right. Left. Right. Left. right.left.right.left.rightleftrightleftrightleftrightleft
Before you know it she's wide open- biting at the water splash and getting the whole porch wet.
We never tried to stop her though cause we were laughing too hard. :)

Same thing here, with my Greman shepheard. I dont know if she thinks there is dog-treasure in the bottom of the bowl! or if she just like to see me filling it up again? Huge problem, she do the same thing inside.( and dont put an lol. after that) She is very good, and I teach her ANYTHING,almost, but not that.

I have 3 of my dogs that will tear up their buckets or flip them to get into the water. My solution,I use the flat back horse buckets for their regular clean water, and each dog also has a half of a plastic 55 gallon drum full of water to soak in.Terra spends most of her day in hers,Cash likes to jump in and sit down after a workout, and Zeus likes to jump into his when I have dumped it and running cold water in.It has been a savior.I tried to attach a pic to show you how I have them, but it kept screwin up,lol.

LOL my advice was going to be to just make the dogs water dish big enough to swim in. We had a dog years back that would have seizures if he got too hot (long black hair, hyper dog, with genetic problems). We just bought him a kiddy pool to lounge in after sprinting around the yard like a crazed devil. Its not too hard to refill them everyday, after awhile it becomes routine, just set the hose in, walk away, come back in 5 minutes. Of course, we filled a water bucket also....but I dont think he ever drank out of it while he had the pool.

LOL I just got a dog the other day, When she gets excited she jumps in her bucket and acts a fool. sometimes she just jumps in and sits there. I have nevere seen this before but i think its funny as hell, except her getting the water dirty how many times a day lol.

I have a child pool too. two of my dogs love to play in water. Both black ones. Maybe it is because they are black and draw more heat to their darker coat. I don't know but I just run the hose out and change the water often. Today I felt like getting in the water buckets too.

  10. LOL!! This is pretty funny, here I thought we were the only ones with this problem..Glad to see we are not, throught all of the APBT's we have had we have never come across one like this....maybe it does have something to with black coat..We have tried everything we can think of but nothing works. Its good to know other dogs do it as well. It is very funny, but the thing I dont like is, when we are gone for the day, she has no clean water to drink...dont mind filling it back up again, but dont like the fact thats its dirty all day. I told my husband that we needed to get a kiddie pool, he said that he has heard that swimming wasnt good for dogs as far as their ears and stuff like that, I have never had a problem with that do any of you? I really do want to get her a pool, but we have to convince him that its ok....please help!

  11. Do you have a problem with ear mites or anything? Or ringworms?

  12. You have some very nice looking dogs! They look really good! You can see pics of ours at http://www.freewebs.com/southeasternpits/ Lady Alreinbach is the one that does this!!

My mom just bought her two boys a kiddie pool. It's so hot down here. So, we thought it would be a good way for them to cool off when outside. They think it's a big water bowl. They won't swim or lay in it, they just drink out of it.
My Chyna dog does not like to get in water. I guess it reminds her of how much she hates a bath. LOL I'm getting my new pup in to swimming though. I take him in the pool with me, he seems to have a good time.
I wouldn't worry too hard about the water being dirty, but that's just me. The way I see it, if you get her a swimming pool, she's going to be dirty when she gets in there and will probably drink the water while cooling. Dogs have been drinking water out of mud holes and creeks for years. If it were me, I'd probably get a kiddie pool and a seperate water dish. I'd put fresh water in when I left in the morning and change it when I got home in the afternoon.

Dont worry about dirty water, they will drink it just fine as long as its just dirt and such. As long as your refilling it everytime you can :)

  15. We are constantly refilling her water bowl! I know its not that bad that it get a little dirty, but ya know...you like your dogs having clean water and such, kinda puts a damper on that!

  16. just break down and get them something big enough to lay around in and drink out of.be alot easier in the longrun.like rock said if it is just a little dirt they will be fine.

Wow, and i thought my apbt was the only one who did this, at 1st i thought he didnt like the idea of being on his chain set up , when i leave home for work, but, one day i , while he wasnt looking, i found that he puts his two front paws in the cooler I provide him to drink water, I dont mind it, but , i think he actually tries to jump inside the cooler, because when i get back from work, i find the cooler empty full of mud, arleady tried making a hole in the ground large enough so the cooler wont tip over, but it doesn to work, might have to get a heavy duty kiddie pool, anyone have any suggestions. thanks.

  18. I dont know about anyone else, but we use concrete water bowls! They are too heavy to tip.
