What are you looking to accomplish? Simply shaping your dog into a healthy, fit canine, or going through an absolute keep? I'm guessing a simple work-out program to keep a healthy mutt, so I'll say depending on what excersises your doing, and what the intensity levels are, a couple hours at least.

I know of old-time breeders who were firm believers in working a dog as long as they anticipated the show to be. Dogs running catmills for a solid 5 hours straight. Of course, this would be nuts for 99.9999999% of any bulldog owner to try, and only a few could do it, and do it properly. I wont even pretend any of us on the forum have enough knowledge to attempt that, and have it work successfully, damn near everyone who would try such a thing would just wind up ruining a dog, so be reasonable on what you really should do, and what not to do. If the dog is a healthy animal already, and used to excersise, a few mile walks would be fine. Most people can walk about 3-4 mph fairly easily, if you can, that should be close to sufficient for the day, most people never get close to actually walking a few miles a day, they are too busy stopping and chatting, or taking breaks and it takes too much time. Just put your head down and walk for an hour, ignore everything, theres 23 hours left in the day to talk to friends or sit down and catch your breath.

The dog will need to rest after that usually, but a few hours later, go out and toss a ball, get them on the springpole or do something, to burn off some more energy for the night ;)

You dont have to get ridiculous just putting a dog in healthy shape for around the house, do what you can, just take your dogs signs and you'll know if your doing too much, or not enough..

I would say start by walking your dog a couple of miles a day then gardually increase the distance then eventually repeat the process by running your dog those same distances.

EX: walk 2miles/day for 5days a week for 2 weeks
    walk 5 miles/day for 5days a week for 2 weeks

run 2 miles a day every other day through the working week for 2 wks
run 5 miles a day every other day through the working week for 2wks

The final stage should be a 5-7 mile run every other day through the work week.

This is the easiest and cheapest way to work your dog. I feed my girl more while on this schedule and she's gotten pretty ripped. I myself feel damn good after running so much.

It all depends on what excercises fit your schedule and what the dog enjoys.

i change my routine with my dog to 3 times week. this may help:
    tue: 45min walk,5 hill sprints(60yds),20 light pulls(5lbs) of 30yds, 5 heavy pulls of 8 yards
    wen: 45min walk,2mile run(13:09),10 medium pulls of 20yds, 8 heavy pulls 8yds
thu: 30min walk, light jog for warmup,10 40yds sprint on the hill,8 60yds sprints on the hill.8 medium pulls and 8 heavy pulls of 15yds.
I ALWAYS GIVE HIM A RUB DOWN AFTER. ANY OTHER DAY HE IS WALKED 1MILE TO 2 1/2 MILES.
I FLIP THE DAYS EVERY WEEK SO LAST WEEK WAS MON, TUES,WENS.
I ALSO RUN WITH MY DOG AND WEIGHT PULLING TOO.

    I HOPE THIS HELPS
