  1. Just Got A Pit & Need Some Advice

Hello, I Just Got A 9 Week Old Brindle Female Pit Bull, Im A Little Worried About Her Attacking My Cats When she Gets A Little Bigger, I Have 2 Cats By The Way. Does Any One Here Own Pits & Cats? Right Now She Likes To Chase The Cats But Shes Smaller Than Them Right Now So She Really Cant Hurt Them But Im Worried That It Wont Stop. And Also She Bites Allot When She Plays. How Cant I Stop That, I Know Shes Just A Baby But I Wanna Try And Break That Habbit Early. Any Advice Would Be Great. Thanks

I have 3 Apbts and 3 cats.. well 1 cat and 2 kittens.. They get used to each other. And the big cat I have puts a hurting on the dogs when she gets tired of them chewing on her. The new pup I just got Folsom has been the hardest one so far but the cat takes only so much then she jumps on his head all four sets of claws and teeth.. don't worry..just keep an eye on them. Pretty soon they end up like this...... nap time with Jorge the cat

I dont have any cats but my Apbt doesnt pay them any attention. I took him over friends house who do have cats. You just have to teach your pup how to play nicely with them. I wouldnt allow Legend to chase the cats. And definitely wouldnt leave him with them alone.

The biting is probably from teething, dont punish the dog for this, but redirect it upon what it can chew on. Not the furniture, but....
Personally I see a cat as an acceptable chew toy for a dog!! I say get rid of the cats and get another bulldog!! they are carriers of eveil spirits and you dont want one infecting the dog.

LOL Just kidding, just kidding, your house is your business. I am allergic to them so they are off limits to my house. Apparantly those who are raised with cats have no problems with them. Usually a bulldog will be aggressive to another animal that it feels is either a threat(depending upon where in the pack it fits in)or another animal that it feels will try and take its place in the pack.

I have 3 apbts and 16 cats. All spayed and neutered. Didn't breed these cats they were all adopted from some very bad places. My 11 year old female apbt has never chased the cats but she does keep them in their place. She decides when they can come in a room. My male almost a year old was a terror when we first brought him home at 8 weeks. He took one look at a cat his tail stiffened out and the chase was on. Had us worried. But after almost a year of " don't hurt the kitty, leave the kitty alone " and many a time I had to run out in the yard shaking my finger at him yelling you leave that kitty alone, he now ignores them. But we now own his half sister who is 5 months old. We got her at 3 months and she was cautious around the cats. I have a very small 3 year old cat, not much bigger than a 4 month old kitten who would chase my pup and scare her. Not anymore, she is now relentless when going after the cats. But recently she has figured out I am not pleased and when I say don't chase the kitty she will now stop. Just be very consistent when using a command regarding the cats.

lol, I have had the cats a while so there will be no getting rid of them, thats why im trying to see if its possible for them to exsist together so i dont have to get rid of the dog.

thanks for the advice on the teething, i thought she was just trying to play, any special chew toys in mind? the lady i got her from says her dogs tear regular toys to shreds.

Be carefull! I had a cat when I got my first Pit bull, and they were fine with eachother untill Molly got around 9 month. One night when I came home from work I found my cat dead and Molly sitting in the kitchen, looking up in the roof like, -I dont know how the bite marks got on the cat, I barley touched it?!
IMO some dogs get along with cats and some dont.

I guess I'm the oddball. My dogs will have nothing to do with cats. But they are'nt on the house either.

Get a Kong and fill it with the stuff, a pull rope, one of those bones that comes off in little pieces, not the kind that turn into a rag, but one of them hard messy bones. Some of mine like to play with sticks. When you buy new tires, tell them you want the old ones, and give this to them to chew on.

I've had my big cat longer than the dogs.. so all the dogs were brought into the house at about 11 weeks or so.. and Sadie cat was already use to dogs because I raised her around my GSD that was stolen at 5 months.. Boomer is 10 months and the most aggressive thing is does is chase Sadie or one of the Kittens Jorge or Chiquita.. and now that Sadie and Jorge don't run from him anymore the only one he'll chase is Chiquita cat.. Cheyenne likes to hold them down and "groom" them... bites them like they have fleas, Folsom chews on them and when they get tired of him chewing on them they usually smack him in the muzzle and send him yelping into the kitchen.. But all of my cats came from the prison I work at so they are hardcore kitties...

but in the end I think they just think its all one big pack

Two pits and two cats. My pits are crated when we are not with them, however my 12 yr old siamese is the queen bee in the house. She can freeze both my dogs with an eerie meow. BTW both cats are indoors and de clawed in the front. Guess it depends on the dog and it depends on the cat!!!!!!

Socialization is key, but there is no gurantees your dog will be fine with it (or the other dogs) for the rest of its life, in fact, the odds are stacked against you with this breed. They are dogs, and thrive more off human companionship, rather than other animals. When mature, they may not like your cat/dog at all. I have two cats living in the house, but they arent allowed near the dogs anymore-they would be snatched up. When I leave, the dogs are put away, and the cats are secured in the top floor of the house. Even if your dogs seem to get along fine, when you leave, its in your best intrest to seperate them.

Spray bitter apple on the cats maybe it will leave them nasty things alone. I would personally get rid of them dust mites. Evil things.
