I got one of these to keep my pit on. He was constantly getting out of our fenced in backyard. He actually ate through the chain link!! So I saw this at walmart although this link is for petco. But you drive it all the way in the ground like the instructions say and the claws on it spread out in the ground when you drive it in. I won't come out for anything. Works great. I figured I would throw it out there for you guys.

Firstly, I had two of them pull out in the same day, by a pup (4-5 months). The chain is not attached securely, and after any length of time...that weld will break....if it stays in the ground long enough to get to that point. Also, Theres no swivel on it, and this will cause binding on that cheap chain attached to it, which will cause it to snap. Without a swivel, your also at risk for a tangled chain, which could mean anything from your dog not being able to run that extra 2' at the end of the chain, or it could be as serious as being immobilized and not being able to reach shelter/water. That is cruelty, and if someone sees that, you will have your dog taken from you.

With axles being stronger, cheaper, and more safe, I dont see why anyone would use a product like that. I didnt have a spare axle at the time the pup pulled it out, figured it would hold long enough so I could get one and drive it in. First time she hit the end of the chain, it pulled out like a toothpick in warm butter, and was just running around the yard with chian and "anchor" still attached, unphazed. I will never use one again, and strongly caution anyone who is, to not do so either. Your dogs safety is depending on it!

That just looks like it won't work. No way.

I was thinking the same thing. You'de be better off using a spiral stake(not much better) than that. It looks like it cost about $2 to make and that's with taxes

Okay I am not trying to sell them or anything. I have been using the one I have for a few months and if you put it in the ground all the way like it says it swivels around fine. My dog does not tangle up or has not been able to pull it up. But I mean hey if you don't want to use it fine. I didn't mean to make anyone upset or anything. I have tried the spiral stake before and that doesn't work anywhere as good as this thing. I have a swivel on the dogs collar end but if you are worried about the chain put a swivel on the end of the piece hanging off the stake. But like I said if you don't like them thats fine.

And my dog is full grown and weighs about 60 pounds. I put him on one of those steel cables first and he snapped that in half.

  9. in the years ive had dogs ive had a couple of different set ups

ive set a nice heavy pipe cemented in the ground ..got it from
a construction site they were tossing the left overs

another dog i had a pipe in the middle of a really large tire rim to
give him something to run around and not get tangled up i just made
sure the chain was nice around the middle of that rim i laid flat

both worked well.. i prefer teach the dog not to leave the yard
but when necessary you gotta do what it takes to protect dog
    and neighbors

right now the heavy pipe keeps prophecy in place

we once tied one of ours (past dogs)to the suburban
to exercise her to our suprise she kept tryin to pull it
her name liftkit said it all she loved trucks!!

I had the axle set-up at first but my dog wasn't smart anough to pull it tight and it tangle up all the time. I was talking to a friend and told me about a bulldog farm in Gerogia that had A LOT of dogs and all their chains were put in ground. The way he told me to do it was to dig a hole no less than two foot take your chain and put something on the end of it (i put half of masion block) lock or weld it together (i put a h/d D ring on mine) if you use the block stand it on it's end and fill the dirt back in. (i put some ceiment to the top of my block becouse i had it) he told me that if I had a h/d swivle at the neck that I didn't need one at the ground. But I had one on my axle so I just bought some 5/16 chain to go around the block and come out of the ground about 6 or 8 inchsand put my chain to mine with a master loop that you hammer together. I promis no dog will come off that.

Every thing has a life span. That stake happens to be a short one. Those twist in deals really suck and are only good for little yappy dogs for temporary tie outs for like camping or something. Other wise they are worthless. My dogs test every thing out. Masters at escaping. Have one that will dig around the axle all night some times. She knows what is holding her from getting after those sheep and chickens alright.

No anger here redrott, just trying to help someone avoid the same problems I had. Luckily, I was standing there and caught it in time, not everyone will be so lucky, and I'd hate for you to come home to your dog missing. Do whatever works for ya I guess

    Redrott,

I do have one and I like it and have not had a problem with it as of yet. But I Do Not leave my dog on it all the time. He is in his kennel during the day and is only on the tieout when supervised. I Would not trust it that much to leave him on that constantly. too many what ifs. The reason I like it is because I have it pretty much in the middle of my back yard and without his chain attached I can pass right over it with the lawn mower (that is a plus for me) and not have to go around it. I have not had a problem with it tangling up because i have a bull snap with swivel on both ends of my dogs chain. When playtime is over the chain comes off and it looks like I have nothing there (which i think is pretty cool). If I was planning on haveing him on a chain setup all the time i would definatley go with the axel set up, because they are proven to work and not be a problem. just my 2 cents.
