Why placing culls as pets usually will not work out

One of my friends had one that didnt make the grade but was good with people, excellent temperment, pretty dog, managable size 42lbs.

We had a mutual friend that new we owned the breed and had been around this particular dog many times and adored the dog. He always said if my friend was ever going to get rid of her to give him a call

The call was made, dog was spayed and much schooling/education was done. Stratton Books, Ed Farons Book, Yard Videos and he had been around our dogs for a few years also.

It was made clear to him this breed needs to be in a secure kennel run or chained at all times and it was clear why this needed to be a part of the dogs life, no running a yard free. He knew she was from current stock and was educated on what this means. My friend made him a 20ft chain spot under a huge tree.

1yr later, yesterday my friend gets a phone call. The dog was never kept on his chain because he was a pet now and had been around a few other dogs without any problems, played well with them and never jumped his 6ft fences.

Dog decided to jump his fence and go into the neighbors yard and kill their GSD. Neighbors came home to a nightmare, the family pet of 7yrs was dead because of an idiot APBT owner that wouldnt listen

THIS is why culls shouldnt be placed, not because of the dogs but people not believing these dogs are not for everyone and have to be chained out.

Sounds like owner error. It could have happened w/ any bull breed they had gotten their hands on.

I could be wrong, but see no foul in placing s/n culls as pets. If we continue to have the rep of putting a bullet in the brain of every dog that doesn't work out, it will not help the breed one bit.

Plus, how old was this dog? A lot of doggers nowadays don't wait long enough to even see if a dog is worth culling. If it hasn't cranked by 18 mos to 24 mos they're ready to ditch it. If the dog was kept on the owners yard, maybe this might not have happened & perhaps they'd have had a good working dog instead of a headline???

    Just wondering.

Good post. I completely agree with you. This breed is not for everyone. Pet owners need to relize that you cannot love the dog aggression out of this breed. They should never be left around other dogs or in a place where they are not securely contained.

ABK, the dog was mature, didnt quit but was just another dog. Wasnt worthy for show and had a few littermates that were high quality so she wasnt needed for brood.

and yes it was owner error and thats the point. Dogs from game stock at all times should be confined when left alone.

If your dogs are chained, when you come home they'll be in the same spot. Real simple

Why is it not good for the breed to put dogs down? It's better to place them in society, where they'll be taken to doggie parks, walks off leash, have a backyard to roam free in? This is what happens

What do you see positive about placing culls in pet homes? How should pet owners care for them?

99% of pet owners think it's cruel to keep our dogs on chains. A huge percentage of people that post on this board own this breed as pets and btch about chaining dogs

Thats why a GSD is dead because a pet owner thought it was mean to chain his dog

I agree!! WAY too many damned idiots owning this breed & IMO NONE of them deserve to. I am SICK of seeing posts that say "my dog got out of it's fence & got hit by a car" and "my dogs do great together, no need to seperate them when I am not home". One person on this board recently said the very same things and now a puppy is dead because of it.

NOT just from game stock. ALL pit bulls! I AM a pet home, always have been. My dogs are confined and separted 24/7. Even if they DID get along well they would STILL be seperated when unattended. They are house dogs but if they WERE outside dogs they would be kenneled or chained. I am ONE pet owner who has no problem with dogs being on a chain as long as they are properly cared for.

Its all about the owner..With our type of dogs you really need to be responsbile i always get freinds over the house stating why are your dogs all chained up damm your dogs are so nice thats sad blah blah blah.

I cant seem to make thm understand all it takes is one little slip and either someones dog is bitten and beat up or possibly someone be bitten..

To me its all up to the owner ....

Every mistake, every accident, every OMG puts another nail in the coffin for our breed. These incidents fuel the drive to BSL.

Unfortunately, anti "Pit Bull" people thrive on using these incidents to support their agenda's, the total eradication of the APBT.

I know that these dogs can make wonderful pets. They are intelligent, loving, dedicated animals. I just wish there were more owners with the same quality's.

  14. it's the exact same situation as a good dog. place it with an idiot and this is what you get. cull or good dog same rules apply. fix the dog if that's what you want but take the time to find "quality" owners. just cuz someone is "around" the dogs doesn't make them a good owner. shit i'm "around" cars. doesn't make me a mechanic though does it. point is this friend is a moron if you took the time to "educate" him as you say.

I have a Pit and a mixed breed, both neutered males. My dogs are never left alone together without being watched, thats in the house or in the yard. If I as much as run to the male box , 1 gets crated, if I go to the bathroom , 1 gets crated and these dogs get along great, but it only takes one playing session for something to get out of hand and you have a seriously injured or dead dog on your hands. IMO placing culls is a great idea if put into the right hands which may be a hard thing to do as people will tell you what ever you want to hear if they really want a dog.

course not, but NO other breed will be focused upon, sensationalized about or viewed as indiscriminally as a bull dog will.
media is like a shark feeding frenzy when it comes to this breed=MUCH of the whole problem
has too much of a ripple effect, imo...

Not jumping your case but how many knowledgeable people want a cur or inferior animal. None i know. If you dont have the balls to do what is needed do not create a problem for the honest folks with good dogs.jmo.CULL HARDER.

It's not as easy as it sounds. And unless you are getting a very high percentage of good dogs you will have more than a few culls that shouild not be bred.

  20. not jumping your case but you're not looking very hard. police use good dogs for drug dogs everyday. therapy dogs, ever heard of them? a real apbt with the normal peple loving skills would be great for that. rescue dogs to sniff out people in rubble. wtf ever. it's not that people can't place them they are just too lazy to find the people and it's so much easier to get out the gun. if cull is the only means to get rid of any of the dogs that aren't fighters then maybe alot of people shouldn't be breeding. good thing humans dont cull maybe alot of wouldn't be here! jmo
