Dogs Who've Shared our Lives

"They will not go quietly,
the dogs who've shared our lives.
In subtle ways they let us know
their spirit still survives.
Old habits still make us think
we hear a barking at the door.
Or step back when we drop
a tasty morsel on the floor.
Our feet still go around the place
the food dish used to be,
And, sometimes, coming home at night,
we miss them terribly.
And although time may bring new friends
and a new food dish to fill,
That one place in our hearts
belongs to them...
and always will."

"Sometimes it helps just to know someone cares...and I do."

A Dog Lives in This House

My dog and I live in this house. You are welcome to come and visit me anytime but we have a few things that you must understand before you visit:

You must expect a few dog hairs to stick to your clothes. I vacuum and clean on a regular basis, but a Dog lives in this house too.

You may be licked and given a paw a few times but he does this because he loves people and wants to say "Hello", so if you feel that you are too good for his love then you may not feel welcome here because this is his home too.

My dog is well mannered and very clean but if you are one of those people who think ALL animals are dirty and smelly then you and I will probably have difficulty feeling comfortable during your visit.

If you don't like the sound of barking, then my home is not likely to be a pleasant place for you. My dog protects me by letting me know I have a visitor. Whether it be a friend or uninvited stranger. If you are a friend, my dog will consider you his friend too but if you are an unwelcome guest, my dog will protect me with his life as I would his.

Do not expect me to lock my dog in another room during your visit. I have trained my dog well so he will not do anything to you except maybe want a pat on the head. I will not subject him to feel as if he is being punished by locking him away for no reason. That would just be cruel.

When you walk in my home, be careful not to trip on a squeaky toy or a bone. These are my dog's little treasures and I will not take them away from him just to show you that I keep a clean house. He knows where all his toys are. They may not look like much to you, but to him, they are worth more than gold.

You see, This is OUR home. We have been together for a long time. I raised him into a well mannered, beautifully behaved dog. I am proud of him.

I consider him my personal gift from God. He has done nothing but give me his endless love and devotion for many years. I love him dearly and want to make his years happy ones. As happy as he makes mine.

When you go home to your family, he stays here with me. A fine and loving companion. He is MY family and I wouldn't change that for the world.

When I was sick, he stayed right by my side as I did his when he was not having a good day. A better friend I could not ask for. When no one else cared, my Dog did. He has given me nothing but pure joy and I love him endlessly.

So please understand that I am not being rude. I'm just looking out for my best friend.

God and Dog

God Summoned a beast from the field and He said, "Behold man, created in my image. Therefore adore him. You shall protect him in the wilderness, shepherd his flocks, watch over his children, accompany him wherever he may go - even unto civilization. You shall be his companion, his ally, his slave."

"To do these things," God said, "I endow you with these instincts uncommon to other beasts: faithfulness, devotion, and understanding surpassing those of man himself. Lest it impair your courage, you shall never foresee your death. Lest it impair your loyalty, you shall be blind to the faults of man. Lest it impair your understanding, you are denied the power of words. Let no fault of language cleave an accord beyond that of man with any other beast - or even man with man. Speak to your master only with your mind, and through your honest eyes.

"Walk by his side; sleep in his doorway; forage for him, ward off his enemies, carry his burdens, share his afflictions; love him and comfort him. And in return for this, man will fulfill your needs & wants - which shall be only food, shelter, & affection.

"So be silent, and be a friend to man. Guide him through the perils along the way to the land that I have promised him. This shall be your destiny & your immortality." So spake the Lord.
And the dog heard and was content.

God made DOG

When God made the earth and sky,
The flowers and the trees,
He then made all the animals
And all the birds and bees,
And When his work was finished
Not one was quite the same.
He said, "I'll walk this earth of mine
And give each a name."
And so he traveled land and sea
And everywhere he went
A little creature followed Him
Until its strength was spent.
When all were named upon the earth
And in the sky and sea,
The little creature said," Dear Lord,
There is not one left for me."
The Father smiled and softly said
"I've left you to the end.
I've turned my own name back to front
And call you Dog, my friend."

How Much Did I Make?

The litter was gorgeous and well should it be
The dam was a daughter of Ch. Well Bred Lady.
Her sire, a big winner, an historic old man,
This bitch just couldn't lose as Miss Fantastic Dam.

She came into season on schedule for me,
The vet said "all healthy," and I paid his fee.
The stud was tops and asked for a lot,
"It's worth it," I thought, though my bank roll was shot.

The shipping was high - she went to L.A.
She went to the vet the very next day.
Her smear told "not ready" for four days, they said,
So she sat in the kennel until she was bred.

Shipped home with a bill, I asked, "What for?"
Why, for pickup and boarding, and vet bill and more.
I paid it, though I hadn't planned on the rate.
"It's worth it," I thought, "for a litter of greats"

For weeks we went back and forth to the vet,
For checkups to be sure that it was all set.
She grew fat and heavy, but complained not a peep,
As I paid for supplements that surely weren't cheap.

Her whelping was easy, no problems there.
The vet looked at each and handled with care.
"Dewclaws off in three days, Come back then."
I took out my checkbook and he lent me his pen.

Dewclaws removed, it wasn't much a deal,
Just a quick cut and suture and a little squeal.
None got infected and the cost was low,
So much more trouble if you just let them grow.

No more free time, I found as a "Mother."
"It's worth it," for I wouldn't have any other.
The puppies are lovely, they're just what I sought.
I'll make back all I've spent as soon as they're bought.

The puppies grew older, shots and food were a need.
"It's worth it," said I as I taught them to feed.
Cleanup more often, the smell was not great.
I installed a new run and a puppy proof gate.

The dam's breeder gets a puppy; one, too I would get.
That leaves three to sell for my debt.
One is too big, that's surely not good,
Another's head is all wrong, so he may be a dud.

The last looks okay, but her bite may not be sound,
It may get better, but that's something I doubt.
The sales are all made, but someone backs out.
A new buyer is found, I'm so glad I could shout!

My bitch is a wreck, can't be shown for a year,
My new puppy's good, except for that ear.
"Was it worth it," say I, "can I really assert?"
How much did I make? I lost my shirt!

I STOOD BY YOUR BED LAST NIGHT

I stood by your bed last night, I came to have a peep. I could see that you were crying, You found it hard to sleep.

I whined to you softly as you brushed away a tear, "It's me, I haven't left you, I'm well, I'm fine, I'm here."

I was close to you at breakfast, I watched you pour the tea, You were thinking of the many times, your hands reached down to me.

I was with you at the shops today, Your arms were getting sore. I longed to take your parcels, I wish I could do more.

I was with you at my grave today, You tend it with such care. I want to reassure you, that I'm not lying there.

I walked with you towards the house, as you fumbled for your key. I gently put my paw on you, I smiled and said "it's me."

You looked so very tired, and sank into a chair. I tried so hard to let you know, that I was standing there.

It's possible for me to be so near you everyday. To say to you with certainty, "I never went away."

You sat there very quietly, then smiled, I think you knew, in the stillness of that evening, I was very close to you.

The day is over... I smile and watch you yawning and say "good-night, God bless, I'll see you in the morning."

And when the time is right for you to cross the brief divide, I'll rush across to greet you and we'll stand, side by side.

I have so many things to show you, there is so much for you to see. Be patient, live your journey out ... then come home to be with me.

LEND ME A PUP

I will lend to you for awhile
a puppy, God said,
For you to love him while he lives
and to mourn for him when he is gone.
Maybe for twelve or fourteen years,
or maybe for two or three
But will you, till I call him back
take care of him for me?

He'll bring his charms to gladden you
and (should his stay be brief)
you'll always have his memories
as solace for your grief.
I cannot promise that he will stay,
since all from earth return,
But there are lessons taught below
I want this pup to learn.

I've looked the whole world over
in search of teachers true
And from the folk that crowd life's land
I have chosen you.
Now will you give him all your love
Nor think the labour vain
Nor hate me when I come to take my pup back again.

I fancied that I heard them say
"Dear Lord Thy Will Be Done,"
For all the joys this pup will bring,
the risk of grief you'll run.
Will you shelter him with tenderness
Will you love him while you may
And for the happiness you'll know forever grateful stay.

But should I call him back
much sooner than you've planned
Please brave the bitter grief that comes
and try to understand.
If, by your love, you've managed
my wishes to achieve,
In memory of him that you've loved,
cherish every moment with your faithful bundle,
and know he loved you too.

May I Go?

May I go now?
Do you think the time is right?
May I say goodbye to pain filled days
and endless lonely nights?

I've lived my life and done my best,
an example tried to be.
So can I take that step beyond
and set my spirit free?

I didn't want to go at first,
I fought with all my might.
But something seems to draw me now
to a warm and loving light.

I want to go. I really do
. It's difficult to stay.
But I will try as best I can
to live just one more day.

To give you time to care for me
and share your love and fears.
I know you're sad and afraid,
because I see your tears.

I'll not be far, I promise that,
and hope you'll always know
that my spirit will be close to you
wherever you may go.

Thank you so for loving me.
You know I love you, too.
That's why it's hard to say goodbye
and end this life with you.

So hold me now just one more time
and let me hear you say,
because you care so much for me,
you'll let me go today.

YOU KNOW YOU'RE A DOG PERSON WHEN...

# You have a kiddie wading pool in the yard but no small children
# Lintwheels are on your shopping list every week.
# Your freezer containes more dog bones than anything.
# You hang around the dog section of your local bookstore way too often.
# Your non-dog friends won't eat food prepared in your kitchen.
# Your parents refer to your pet as their "grand-dog."
# You have baby gates permanently installed at strategic places around the house but no babies.
# You open your purse and that big bunch of baggies you use for pick-up pops out .
# You skip breakfast so you can walk your dog in the morning before work.
# The trash basket is more or less permanently installed in the kitchen sink, to keep the dog out of it while you're at work.
# You can't see out the passenger side of the windshield because there are dog nose prints all over the inside.
# You don't go to happy hours with co-workers anymore because you need to go home and walk your dog.
# You don't think it's the least bit strange to stand in the back yard chirping "Molly, Pee!" over and over at your dog who tends to play and forget what she's our there for.
# You go to the pet supply store every Saturday because it's one of the very few places that lets you bring your dog inside, and the dog loves to go with you.
# You get an extra long hose on your shower massage just so you can use it to wash the dog in the tub, without making the dog sit hip deep in water.
# You and the dog come down with something flu like on the same day. The dog sees the vet while you settle for an over the counter remedy from the drug store.
# You not only have dog toys strewn about, but your guests also have to be careful not to trip on the dog jumps. (well we gotta exercise them in the winter somehow)
# Your weekend activities are planned around taking your dog for a hike.
# You refer to yourself as "mommy" and "daddy".
# Your dog sleeps with you.
# You'd rather stay home on Saturday night and cuddle your doggies than go to the movies with your sweetie.
# You keep an extra water dish in your second-floor bedroom, in case your dog gets thirsty at night.
# You avoid vacuuming the house as long as possible because the dogs are afraid of the brain-sucker.
# When your dog is getting old and arthritic, and you go buy lumber and build it a small staircase so it can climb onto the bed by itself.
# You shovel a zig-zag path in the back yard snow so your dog can reach all of his favorite places.
# Your have 32 different names for your dogs. Most make no sense but they understand.
# Your dog eats cat poop but you still let him/her kiss you (but not immediately after, of course)
# You never completely finish a piece of steak or chicken so the dog gets some too.
# Poop has become a source of conversation for you and your significant other.
# You are the only idiot walking in the pouring rain because your dog needs his walk.
# You send birthday, anniversary and Christmas cards from your dog.
# You like people who like your dogs. You despise people who don't.
# You lecture people on responsible dog ownership every chance you get.
# You keep eating even though you find a dog hair in your pasta.
# You carry dog biscuits in your pockets all the time.
# You make popcorn just so you can play catch with your dog.
# You talk about your dogs like other people talk about their kids.
# You have your dog pictures on your office desk. (but no one else's).
# Your license plate or license plate frame mentions your dogs.
# You match your furniture, carpet and clothes to your dog.

WHERE DO PETS COME FROM?

It is reported that the following edition of the Book of Genesis
was discovered in the Dead Seal Scrolls. If authentic, it would
shed light on the question, "Where do pets come from?"

And Adam said, "Lord, when I was in the garden, you walked
with me everyday. Now I do not see you anymore. I am
lonesome here and it is difficult for me to remember how much
you love me."

And God said, "No problem! I will create a companion for you
that will be with you forever and who will be a reflection of my
love for you, so that you will know I love you, even when you
cannot see me. Regardless of how selfish and childish and
unlovable you may be, this new companion will accept you as you
are and will love you as I do, in spite of yourself."

And God created a new animal to be a companion for Adam.
And it was a good animal. And God was pleased.

And the new animal was pleased to be with Adam and he wagged
his tail. And Adam said, "But Lord, I have already named all the
animals in the Kingdom and all the good names are taken and I
cannot think of a name for this new animal."

And God said, "No problem! Because I have created this new
animal to be a reflection of my love for you, his name will be a
reflection of my own name, and you will call him DOG."

And Dog lived with Adam and was a companion to him and loved
him. And Adam was comforted. And God was pleased. And Dog
was content and wagged his tail.

After a while, it came to pass that Adam's guardian angel came to
the Lord and said, "Lord, Adam has become filled with pride. He
struts and preens like a peacock and he believes he is worthy of
adoration. Dog has indeed taught him that he is loved, but no one
has taught him humility."

And the Lord said, "No problem! I will create for him a companion
who will be with him forever and who will see him as he is. The
companion will remind him of his limitations, so he will know that he
is not always worthy of adoration."

And God created CAT to be a companion to Adam. And Cat
would not obey Adam. And when Adam gazed into Cat's eyes, he
was reminded that he was not the supreme being. And Adam
learned humility.

And God was pleased. And Adam was greatly improved.
And Cat did not care one way or the other.

I got this off the internet a few years ago, but I don't remember the site.
"ANGEL'S BY OUR SIDE"
Within lies the loveliness of one perfect rose,
The sparkling beauty of fresh winter snows,
The magic of moonlight, a star's gentle smile,
While the bravest of hearts beats inside all the while.
What a wonderful beast, how noble and true,
Who'd gladly give his life for me or for you.
Who'll tolerate no nosense, yet wears her heart on her sleeve,
Who lives for your return each time you leave.
Whose joy has no measure, for when the night sky has cast,
She has always lived the day as if it were her last.
Who cannot but share with you such gladness and mirth,
For this happiness seems instilled in him even at birth.
When our day brings us wearily to our front door,
When the weight of the world has us feeling so poor,
On the other side is a spirit whose love for us shines,
To whom all our worries and frustrations is blind.
Who could this dog be, we read nothing of it's breed,
So wonderful and loving for sure the public would take heed.
Yes, it's a Pit Bull terrier, that I characterize,
Yet the newspapers say the dog is despised.
So vicious and evil that all human lives are in peril,
His behavior so violent, so low and so feral.
How could it be that this dog filled with laughter,
Is portrayed as a villain and so hatefully sought after.
How could this 'pit', so deep in dreams at my feet,
Be the one that they speak of, so dreadful to meet.
How could this dog, at my side strong and brave,
Be the one they so freely describe as depraved?
The answer is simple; I'm sure you all know,
Only man himself could bring a pit bull so low.
No 'pit' abused another, nor ever fired a gun;
He never tortured his kind for his own perverse fun.
No 'pit' was ever driven by money or greed,
For ego and false pride, he's never had need.
No, only a man this wretched reputation could make,
For a 'pit's' heart remains pure though his life be at stake.
So look after your pup, keep him close by your side,
For there are many who'd disparage and lie.
Keep guard over her fate; give her life your protection;
This dog so maligned, yet with so few imperfections.
For when all's said and done, in our hearts we are sure,
That the pit bull terrier as a breed will endure.
Through the good times and the bad, at our best or our worst,
These angels bring us all a piece of heaven on earth.

Dear Lord:

Please watch over our humans, they are so weak. They have no claws or teeth, they can't run fast or fly away, neither can they burrow or build a nest in which to be safe. They smell bad, do strange things that aren't altogether intelligent, have no real ability to communicate with us, although we are able to figure out what they want.

Lord, grant US the ability to watch over our humans, care for them, cheer them when they are down, make them laugh, smile, and shower them with our love. We pray that we can bring a little joy into their otherwise mundane existence... Lord...please let them know that when we insist on getting attention, it is so we can check their emotional well being and boost their morale. When we pester them for different foods, toys, etc., its so they will learn to see us in ways they hadn't considered, bringing them closer and back into the fold ... which they are part of but keep forgetting about.

They expect us to know what they want even though sometimes they don't know what we want. Some of them really try and we know they love us but some of them are so dumb yet our love for them remains intensely faltering.

Lord, when we die, please make sure to send us ahead to where ever our humans are going to be, so we can pave the way for them, vouch for them and be there for them when they too die......please allow us to continue proving the humans are worth the effort. You placed these humans in dominion over us, but you charged us with the task of caring for them, SHOWING them your love every day, through us.

God bless these mere mortal humans, they know not that we are their guardian angels sent in love to task them so that they may grow to be part of your plan. You and Us God ... we'll bring them back into the fold ... you and us.

When I was finished there, I looked all around what could I fix next? Oh yes...That new chair!

So into the den where we go to eat, I shred the leather stool, so it's softer for your feet.

I hop in the seat of the matching new chair and find it's so cold How can you put your butt there?

I know you've told me, it's not for me to use, but surely you won't mind If I warm it up for you?

My claws are so sharp you always say, but I don't like the clipper so you let them stay.

When you pulled in the drive, I heard your car hum, I was so happy you're home, I didn't realize what I'd done...

In my mad dash for the door, I never heard the sound of that brand new leather as it shred, ripped and tore.

When you came in, I was so ecstatic! I bounced and I jumped, I clung to you like static.

You'd had a bad day, I could tell by your face and the way you yelled, and screamed in my face.

You knocked me down and brushed your dress I know with your new job your under so much stress.

I waited for you by your brand new chair when you came in you almost pulled out your hair.

You screamed and you shouted, and chased me around. What fun. . she wants to play! So I ran, barked and bound!

When I stopped and turned to give you a break... The whole house looked like it'd been in an earthquake!

I knew something was wrong when you picked up the phone and called the animal shelter and said I needed a new home.

A short while later, a truck pulled up close, with a strange looking man, no smile, no treat no hello's.

I was crammed in the back, with mongrels and curs, they all looked so mean, with dirty, matted fur.

They snarled and they growled, I was so taken aback! I only wanted to say Hi, Why did they attack?

I was ripped and torn when they took me out, but the others were dead. They blamed me without a doubt.

They called me vicious and said I should die, I didn't understand, couldn't see why.

So inside I went, in a smelly, strange place I was confused and scared, It showed on my face.

No kind people to lick, This must be a joke! No friendly hands that pet, just ones that poked.

I was marked unadoptable, what did that mean? I was the friendliest dog alive. This was impossible!

The next day they came, and opened my door, I was so embarrassed, I peed in the floor.

They lifted me up onto a big table and held me down, I couldn't move, I wasn't able.

I felt a pin prick, and slowly closed my eyes there was no more fear, I knew I had died.

I now stand in front of a gate, it's so big and pretty! Not the kind I hate.

I was beckoned inside so I ran with joy! To a friendly man with a brand new toy!

He held it out to me and I took it with pleasure, He said it was mine, Now and forever.

He told me "No more yelling, No More hitting, No fear" For you are most welcome In all the chairs here."
As I looked all around at the stars up above, I knew I would never ask, What does it take to be loved?

THE PRIVATE WAR

All anyone can ask, is a fair shake, a try
No promises, no guilt, no need to cry
One freedom to preserve, what we once held so dear
As character, courage and loyalty, in ourselves disappear
We stand up sans peur, not for money, nor false pride,
For these soldiers defend something, far deeper inside,
And we will be frontline for this soldiers fight
For we are his army for the love....and his life!

Bulldog Alley

The bulldog in life, the loyal friend,
The first to welcome, foremost to defend,
Whose purest heart is still his master's own,
Who fights, lives, and breathes for him alone,
Unhonoured falls, unnoticed for all his worth,
Denied the victories he held on earth,
While man, vain creature, hopes to be forgiven,
Proclaims his gameness......fame and ego driven
