Camillus (WSYR-TV) - It's a case of animal abuse shocking even to people who regularly deal with this sort of thing. A dog was taken out to a rural road, tied to a tree and left for dead.

Camillus police and dog control say they are doing all they can to find whoever did this to the dog. Teka is doing much better today, making herself at home for now at the Camillus dog shelter. It’s a far cry from how she was found.

Dog Control Officer Melissa Mariano says it was shocking. “The snow was quite deep at the time and it was knee high and she was in from the road about 10 to 12 feet.”

"She was pretty bad. She had a lot of frost bite, her face started to peel from all the dead skin she had on her face,” said Camillus Detective James Nightingale.

They found the pit bull chained to this small tree. A path she wore into the ground can still be seen at the scene. Investigators believe she was here a good two or three days.

Mariano says one of her paws was missing three toenails and was very swollen. “I equate that to her trying to dig away and her mouth was very swollen from chewing from the chain she was on which was heavy gauge and trying to get away also."

Mariano says the two and a half foot chain was tied around the tree giving the dog only about a foot and a half of movement. "People have to realize that animals are dependent on us and to leave an animal without any food, any water, no shelter could hardly move, that's a crime.”

So far investigators have had no luck solving this crime, which they say has been frustrating and are asking for your help now finding whoever did this to Teka. "She's a resilient dog, she's happy, she's well rested now, she's starting to gain weight and her injuries I don't believe are life threatening." Mariano said.

The name Teka was given to her at the vets. It comes from the Latin “to preserve something precious,” and that's what they're trying to do here. While they work on catching whoever left her on that road to die.

Teka was found March 12th on Thompson Road behind the Erie Canal in Camillus. Police are looking for your help, so they've put pictures and a little more on the case on their crime solver page. Click here to link to the page. Copyright 2007 CLEAR CHANNEL COMMUNICATIONS

I feel like what goes around, comes around, eventually. They will get caught. I'm thinking possitive. She looks like such a sweetheart and I'm glad they did the full story on her, video and all. That makes it all the more horrible!

What the F*** is wrong with these people. If you don't want your dog any more just give it to an animal shelter and they will take it for free. It doesn't have to suffer and its not cruel. My dog was abondaned in a garage for about a week before he was found and I can tell that he wasn't treated well. He was friendly but didn't really trust me and was defensive. People like this should be eliminated.

Teka is so cute and appealing! What can I say. It's like how I felt about Blue when I first saw her.
She was so appealing. If I saw that dog, I'd take her home and go through all the stuff of keeping her and Blue separate...
There is just something so lovable about "pit bulls". arrggghhh! I'm such a sucker for dogs!
