I know an older man that has some of the best all around bulldogs I've ever seen. He is a strict believer in If it don't work it don't eat. I asked him how his dogs were registered and he said they weren't. He said all paper work is good for is to tell you what your dog should be, He has hand written pedigrees that go back atleast 15 generations. I may get a pup from him. Some of the names in his peds were Boudreaux's Scrub, Boubreaux's Red, Tudor's Dibo and Carver's Black Widow. I guess the Question is would you guys be put off by the fact that he doesn't have any official documentation.

He strikes me as an honest man and he is up front about all of his dogs, and he doesn't sell many pups/dogs.

theres a lot of old timers that do the same thing down here;to me as long as the dog is a good one who need registration papers!

no if the quailty is there i would not be put off at all.infact i did the same thing long ago.in quite a few of my older dogs pedigrees you will see pure bred but not registered.and since the ADBA went and did what they did i am now doing the same thing yet again.paper doesn't make the dog, that dog is going to be good or bad no matter what paper it has on it.i have a ledger the size of a small coffe table with hand written pedigrees from way back when i was young and here recently.PM me the mans name there is a chance i may know him and can tell you if he is honest or not if i do know him.

yea i would be more worried who bred the dog and why. papers become secondary when the breeder's skill is superb and is evident in the dogs produced.

The breeder who I got chloe from got most her dogs from her grandfather who had only hand written peds.It wasnt untill she started becoming more involved by breeding dogs of her own that they had dog's registered with A.D.B.A,She told me he always said as long as you knew what You had ,that's all that mattered and the only people he would ever consider selling or giving one of his dogs to he would have to know well enough that they would trust him anyway..

Hand-written pedigrees from an honest breeder are worth infinetly more than any registrations papers from a bullshitter.

Its going to depend on what you want to do with the dog. If you're looking for something to do events with, then you're going to have your options limited by a dog that isn't registered with a legitimate registry. But if you just appreciate a good dog, and you like what this guy is feeding, go for it.

If you like what you see, I say go for it. Like someone mentioned earlier, most of the old timers did it. Just because they weren't register that doesn't mean they aren't good dogs. The fact that he sells a few pups/dogs if any, gives you an idea what kind of person he is. Maybe the only few that he sells, are placed in the hands of people he knows who appreciates them. How many gamefowls out there are registered? :D

Maybe the guy is just useing his head keeping his own records of breeding
Why use a registry body who will keep records of his dogs and what he has bred who knows who can get their hands on the recorded details these registry bodies keep

"The reg. cert or handwritten Pedigree is only as good as the man you are buying the dog from... " "If I didn't trust the man I was buying the animal from what difference did it make if it had a reg cert? You can fake a reg cert just as easy as a handwritten Pedigree. What's the difference between a fake reg cert and a fake handwritten ped? No difference, one just costs you $20..." (PR)

This is a quote from another message board that I am on. I think he sums it up pretty nice.

  15. first of all, i agree with everybody's assessment that many old timers do this and shouldn't be feared as long as you know the person well.

now in your first post you said you know him. now in this post you say "he strikes me as an honest man" seems like if you "knew" him nothing would have to "strike" you, you would be sure.

yes old timers kept handwritten peds. yes most don't turn a dog loose to just anybody. so, do you know him well or not? cuz if you don't know him well, why is he turning a puppy loose to you then? not meant to be critical here, just something else for you to think about.

I see nothing wrong with it as long as, like everyone said, you know him and he's trust worthy. Our family of dogs have hand written peds and I KNOW theyre good dogs. This line has been in ATK for 15 years. We also have a few that have reg papers too that are bred really well but still too young to tell if theyre gonna be good or not. Ive always heard that the old school dogmen did hand written peds and like 14 rock said, I'd trust them more than some dick with ADBA peds. From what I understand you can hang papers on anything, doesnt make it a good dog. If an old timer is breeding the dog, hes obviously doing it for a reason. I say go for it for sure, maybe some of the best stuff you'll find.

He is actualy a close friend of my Uncle I have meant him several times. I have seen his yard and was very impressed, He has also seen my yard and that is when we spoke about me getting a pup. He also made me agree if I did get a pup and it wasn't what I wanted that it would come straight back to his yard no questions asked.
