I don't know jack about breeding and I don't ever plan on breeding, but I never knew that breeding sister/brother; mother/son; etc was going on. Like I said, I don't know breeding at all, but I thought, please don't get upset, that they would turn out like when people breed w/ their brother/sister/etc. I had no idea that pups can be wonderful. (like the ones posted above)

Marty, when you said you have to know what you're doing, can you elaborate a little for me? Or if other can elaborate, that would be great as well.

Dog inbreeding has been going on for a very long time i also dont really know anything about breeding so dont take what i say to heart but i think people inbred because they wanted to make sure that they kept the traits of the mother n son or what ever that was bred. but i have seen some inbred pitbulls that had that little bulldog overbite or what ever its called where u can see the 2 canines sticking out. But i plan on learning more about breeding, an dna and etc soon just hasent been something i have focused on in my time with pitbulls.

I'll let others explan it, I'm not to good with wording stuff like that but it can be done just not all the time, and what I have with these pups is about as tight as you want them... then comes the out cross ;)

The whole subject of inbreeding is shrouded in myth and misinformation, and that goes for people too.
"I thought...that they would turn out like when people breed w/ their brother/sister/etc."
Well, they do! Inbreeding bulldogs isn't a whole lot different than inbreeding people, biologically speaking. Throughout history, kings and queens and nobles and the like bred within certain families for generations. They did this to maintain a strong bloodline, just like it's done with the dogs. If a human brother and sister with good genes were to mate, chances are good that they'd have solid offspring. On the flipside, a couple with poor genetics would probably produce a child that was less than brilliant or beautiful, so to speak. According to science, it's possible to eliminate negative recessive genes from a bloodline completely, through the inbreeding of "best brother" to "best sister" for several generations. Eventually the bloodline would become so strong that outcrossing would be a serious detriment, but the genetics would undergo a gradual and major decline before they began to strengthen up again. However, it would take a relatively long time before negative effects reached a constancy, provided the genes were solid to begin with.

To answer the question, "When is it time to cross?" When a consistent loss of vigor begins to manifest among all the offspring, it is time to cross.

This particular AB is out of a brother/sister cross. COI of 54%...that litter produced stable, healthy working dogs. I plan on using him as a stud to my AB gyp in early 2008.

This is Duke Jr. He is the product of a two time brother sister breeding, then a daddy daughter. J wrote the 4 gen ped down for me and theres very few dogs in it. :)

Rockstar: Thanks for the response. Very detailed and scientific. I"ve never really thought about it in terms of how you described it. As long as brother/sister; son/daughter; etc is working, then I guess why not do it. From what I read, it gives a very good chance that the dog will be a strong and healthy dog.

    Very intersting!

    Thanks,
    Andrew

One thing I'd like to add: There have been controlled studies conducted on rats and mice in which they were inbred (brother to sister) for more than seventy generations without the appearance of any genetic defects.

I tell folks like this: It's not inbreeding itself, it's what you're working with. If you're working w/ crappy genetics, all you're going to get mostly crap. But if you're working w/ good genes, you're going to get mostly good stuff.

My dog is the result of a triple breeding on Lonzo's CH. Buba. What they did was take Buba & bred him to his sister. That breeding resulted in 1xw Red Bomb. They took her & bred her back to Buba. That resulted in 2xw Thistle. They bred her bred back to Buba again to make my dog. I'd post his ped, but Peds Online is offline.

Anyway, my dog is tremedously inbred. But he's a wonderful dog.

When the offspring have serious faults and offspring are not meeting goals of breeding.
