    BSL ALERT: FLORIDA STATE: HB101

    2008 FL H 101
    AUTHOR:
    Thurston
    VERSION: Prefiled
    VERSION DATE: 09/04/2007

    HB 101
    A bill to be entitled

An act relating to dangerous dogs; amending s. 767.14, F.S.; eliminating the prohibition of Breed specific local government regulation of dangerous dogs; providing an effective date. Be It Enacted by the Legislature of the State of Florida: Section 1. Section 767.14, Florida Statutes, is amended to read:

767.14 Additional local restrictions authorized.--Nothing in this act shall limit any local government from placing further restrictions or additional requirements on owners of dangerous dogs or developing procedures and criteria for the implementation of this act, provided that the provisions of this act are not lessened by such additional regulations or requirements. This section shall not apply to any local ordinance adopted prior to October 1, 1990.

Section 2. This act shall take effect July 1, 2008.

Dem. Rep Perry Thurston is the bill's author, his territory is Broward County. So people in Broward in particular but really the entire state need to take action in writing him as well as your individual representatives expressing their views on why this bill is dangerous and undesirable. We have until January to get all of our letters into our representative's hands. Please don't wait until then, it will be too late. Our Reps work for us, we need to show them what we want! We DO NOT WANT this bill to even be introduced for consideration of a vote.

Angry constituents often go unheard; firm, responsible, educated reasoning backed up with concrete science and data do.

These politicians need to hear from their constituents.

Anyone who owns ANY breed of dog be it a bully breed, Rottweiler, German Shepherd, Dobie, etc...needs to take action against this bill. Right now it's pit bulls and/or any bully breed or mixed bully breed in Miami-Dade County; tomorrow it could be Rottweilers; Akitas; German Shepherds; Golden Retrievers; etc throughout the State..

If you choose to remain uninvolved, do not be amazed when you no longer any property rights! If they can do this to your dog, is anything you have out of their reach? Your rights will be taken away while you are so peacefully staying out of the "fray". Check history, it is full of nations/empires that disappeared when its citizens no longer held to their core beliefs and values. One person CAN make a difference. One plus one plus one plus one plus one plus one.........

The State of Florida, Statute 767.14 [62] forbids local governments in Florida from enacting breed specific laws unless the law was in place before October 1, 1990. Several communities, including Miami-Dade County, Florida had such laws in place before the law took effect and pit bull ownership is banned there.

This is a letter I just recieved from my representative. I feel it is very important for Floridians to act on this NOW. We may be able to stop this before it even gets to a council vote!!!

    Dear Mr. Chamberlin:

Thank you for writing to express your concerns regarding HB 101 which
would allow local governments to prohibit certain breeds of dogs. As an
animal owner myself, I appreciate your passion on this issue.

This legislation has been referred to the House Committee on
Agribusiness and the Natural Resources Council. Only after careful
review by both of these committees will it be presented to the full
    House for a vote.

Because I do not sit on either of these committees, I will not have an
opportunity to vote on this issue until, and if it comes to the floor
    of
    the House.

In the meantime, I am attaching a list of the members of each committee
hearing this legislation in the House. I strongly suggest that you
contact each committee member at your earliest convenience and share
    your thoughts with them.

Again, thank you for sharing your concerns with me. If I can be of
further assistance on this or any other matter, please do not hesitate
to e-mail or call my office.

    Sincerely,

    Representative Dick Kravitz
    District 19
