Investigators: Dogfight May Have Been Accident

Omaha,NE -- Felony dogfighting charges filed against two adults last week have been dropped, and investigators said on Tuesday the fight may have been an accident.

Last Thursday, police and Humane Society officials said they impounded four dog who they believed were part of a dog fighting operation. On further investigation, officials said they've learned that one dog actually attacked the other dog and it wasn't an intentional dogfight.

Andrea Humphrey and her 19-year-old son were arrested and charged with felony dogfighting. Two minors were also taken into custody. Humphrey said she spent four days in jail.

"I think it's a little ridiculous," Humphrey said. "If it was a dog fight there would have been more people, and it'd be hidden."

Pam Wiese of the Nebraska Humane Society said officials reacted correctly.

"There were drops of blood, injured dogs. (It) appeared to be a dog fight. It had all the appearances of being a dogfight, and then turned out not to be," Wiese said.

The Humane Society offers up to a $10,000 reward for dogfighting tips, and Wiese said that though a mistake was made, their policy will not change.

"Everybody did everything right, and with further investigation, found these guys shouldn't be charged and should be let go," she said.

Humphrey said the dogfighting crackdown has gone too far.

"It's really scary. By saying (it was) a dogfight, a lot of people have got hurt," Humphrey said.

The owner of one of the dogs is facing misdemeanor charges for harboring a dangerous animal.

The Douglas County Attorney's Office said both juveniles charged are still being held at the detention center with their felony dogfighting charges pending, but a representative said that's likely to change tomorrow. Exact details of the changes were not offered.

Something like that will make people accuse just about anyone with an APBT of being a dogfighter...This is messed up.

I wonder if they got their dogs back, or if they've already been euthanized.

10G's is enough to start a major witch hunt. Well, maybe not start because its already started. But I'm sure it's going to make it a hell of alot worse.

This is BS also. The owner is charged because its dog started a fight with another DOG???

I'm working on a letter shortly asking her what would have happened to me when my 2 Labs got into a major fight (happened several years ago). Would I have been arrested and my son taken from me?

This has gone too far. It makes me sick to my stomach. :(

Agreed, our dogs most definately have targets on their heads. Normally i am a optimistic person. However, i feel things are going to get worse before they get better. Its seems there is little investigation these days, any misguided, rediculous hunch of dogfighting and they busting down your doors. And when someone is convicted of something illegal you can count on the media to exaggerate matters grossly. Bad Pitbulls sell papers. If my mothers poodle tears apart the neighbors cat nobody will ever know about it. God forbid that a cat get in your yard and something happens. I could go on forever, but this is depressing.
