The hay around the yard is good, it covers the snow right in the area where the dog does its pooing and walking and laying in the sun...then its really easy to rake it all away and burn,...last year even in the wet or snowy times... I would rake away the hay "carpet" I had around my houses and if it was sunny but even still cold it would dry out in seconds it seemed ...and burn real good, especially if you had some cardboard boxes to toss it on top of....I would put a bale on each side of the house and let the dog jumpin on it and laying on it break it up over time.... until I raked it away and added some more... usually every week to 2....to me it was ok and looked better than dirty crappy nasty frozen snow with piss all over it...the hays a lot easier to move away than ice and snow which dont burn anyway you gotta wait for it to melt....

Raising kids and dogs in small spaces is much like having dogs that can't be together. The kids will grow in a very short time and the dog will age and not be so active so you are looking at maybe 2 years of rotating. Kids in bed for naps dog loose, kids up playing dog in crate, kids in bed for the night dog out of crate and lots of dog walks. It worked well for my daughter and her 65 lb APBT when she had two late life babies. The kids are now 3 and 5 and now everyone is doing fine running around at the same time.
The dog will be much happier inside since he is an inside dog and he will still be with his family instead of being isolated and cold. Just keep him supplied with marrow bones from the grocery store which not only excercises their jaw it also excercises their whole body fighting to get the marrow out of the bone and it keeps them busy while also making them tired. He will view his crate as a wonderful bone happy place. Save the bones after he has cleaned them out well and fill them with peanut butter, cream cheese, canned dog food and freeze them to use as treats in his crate.

Some good suggestions... I'd prefer the chain set up as it is more secure in the long run but you need to check your local laws as there are many "anti-tethering" laws out there now.

If you do put him in a kennel, heed what others have said about having a top on it, and a concrete floor to keep him from digging out. A concrete floor will also keep him cleaner and is easier to clean up too. And a good dog house is a must.

Whatever containment you decide on, I would start him slowly. Put him out there for 30 mins, and give him a big raw knuckle bone to chew. That way he will have a pleasant association with being outside by himself.

Leave him 30 mins and bring him in, do this for a few days and then gradually lengthen the time he's out there. Giving him a raw bone to chew will keep him occupied too, as well as making it more positive for the dog.

You should be able to get a house dog to spend time outside and be happy about it if you take your time so he can adjust. As long as you use common sense and start his outside time slowly so it does not seem like punishment to the dog, he should adjust just fine.

Here's a link with some good info about dog kennels and what works well for pit bulls:
