Update...Shelters overcrowded after break-up of suspected dog fighting ring

Local shelters are up to their collars in canines, partly because of a recent raid that shut down an alleged dog fighting operation.

Nearly 150 animals were suddenly homeless after the Pima County and Tucson Swat Teams hit four homes simultaneously last month.

In the 1200 block of West Orange Grove Road alone, near Sandario Road, more than a hundred dogs were confiscated. Deputies also found a breeding kennel and dozens of guns.

They say more dogs and money were found at two other homes. The animals are now filling our local shelters.

Pima Animal Care and the Humane Society of Southern Arizona are both bursting at the seams, and they need your help.

From a Springer Spaniel named McQueen, to a black Chow known as Teddy, almost thirty dogs moved from Pima Animal Care to the Humane Society of Southern Arizona.

There just wasn't enough space to keep them after 147 dogs, mostly pit bulls from last month's bust, needed a home.

"We had to take in a huge number of animals from Pima Animal Care's facility," said Humane Society spokesperson, Jenny Rose.

The Humane Society has 29 stray dog kennels. Twenty-seven dogs came from Pima Animal Care, so space and finances really tightened up.

"It's a huge number of dogs that we took in, as well as a huge number of dogs that they had to deal with," said Rose. "It was a big operation. We needed to help out any way we could, so we took the animals in here. But, of course that's putting a big strain on our operations."

Meanwhile at Pima Animal Care, a litter of nine puppies is just one of three litters to come in after the dog fighting bust.

"We're always full. But, we're a little extra full now," said Kim Janes, Manager of the Pima Animal Care Center.

Janes says much of the outcome of the dogs from the raid depends on the courts.

News 4 asked Janes if the dogs will ever be adoptable or if they will be euthanized.

"They're just demonstrating [that] they're just too much of a risk to the community," he said.

According to Janes, the owners can buy the dogs back after a heavy bond: between $12,000 and $62,000, depending on the owner.

If not, the animals become Pima County's property.

What's more is that even if these men do decide to "buy their dogs back", the animals still remain in custody of the county and can be euthanized as the county sees fit! Now, aint that some shit?

  5. Law enforcement lives on the internet. They find out a lot of their information this way.

Means nothing in a court of law. Look at how often the constitution has been changed, or ignored all together. For christ sake, McCain isn't even a natural born citizen. Wish is still mattered.

i've ignored this one for some time, but i can't resist anymore. HELLO TO ALL YOU PIECES OF CRAP OUT THERE. i live in oregon and would be happy to take one of your legs off. there are signs everywhere on my property stating how illegal trespassing is. and to boot, i'm not that nice of a guy. so, if you can get past the gate and the two mile driveway, and then my two free roaming guard dogs and my guns, you can visit with me. ;)

Its getting to the point where its hard to just have apbt's... I mean If you chain them, they say you fight them, if you put them in a kennel, they say you fight them, you have a springpole for excercise, they say its fighting equipment.... If you own more than 5, they say you running a dog fighting operation.. lol They should just come out with a fucking APBT law book... The Do's nd the Dont's of the APBT.... This getting out of hand

We know that. Why the quotes? Saying something sucks is now taboo. I think they could find a lot harder evidence than that if they are looking.:p

id just like to state something here.
when ever i have had to go to a vet, the vet alway used to ask what type of dog is he/she.
they were always cautious, when i finally stated it was a pit bull, not a cross, not a so called pit bull, but the real mc coy, they would say "oh, okay",they would then go ahead and give needles and do there checks with no problems. theyve always said to me what fantastic dogs they are and that they feel absolutely confident in doing thier job around the dog. theve also always said to me that they wish more of the other breeds were just like them. theve told me 99% of all other dogs they see have to be muzzled before they can even touch them.
    Whats that tell ya?
just to add, my vet didnt know what i had the first few times they saw them. i thought i would let them get to know the dog before they passed judgment. to say the least, my vet is a much more educated person now and all the staff now come to say hello when we rock up. some of the staff have also asked if i would ever give them a pup if i ever bred them. unfortunately i have declined. i would not give or sell another pup till my dieing day.
    just my 2cents worth.
    D'S.

Wow. Does anyone ever think we research and want proven bloodlines to avoid problems for us and other people?
