Hi Everyone! Meet Lotto!

Discussion in 'Introductions' started by LottosMama, Mar 14, 2008.

  1. Hi Everyone.

I'm new here, wanting to introduce myself and my new Pit Pup. Lotto is 4 months old and whopping 40 pounds! He's been the joy of my life the last month that we've had him...so smart, so much fun to train as well. We also have 2 cats, one 3 year old and 1 5 month old kitten. They don't really get along too well as Lotto is pretty dominant over any smaller animal, but I feel they will tolerate each other well enough over time.

I have a 9 year old daughter and have been married for going on 3 years.

I hope that I can find support, information, and a place to just vent sometimes here. With Pits, I am already finding the fear of the breed a stupid issue, especially since mine is a puppy, a big one, but still a puppy...so just looking to share experiences and gain as much insight as possible on raising him.

    Thanks in advance!

Welcome to the site. Your pup is really cute but honestly he looks like he has Dane or something in him, and 40 lbs at 4 months is WAY to big. 40 lbs is what most adults weigh.

Welcome! We are glad to have you, and hope you will stay and absorb as much info as you can, and take some people with a grain of salt ;)

First thing i would do is get your boy neutered. This will help with many issues, i.e. marking his territory inside, etc. Also, SOCIALIZE SOCIALIZE and SOCIALIZE some more. Training and your dog learning who is master is also of major importance.

Here are the 10 "Pit Bull" commandments that i think are extremely wise to follow-

    1.
Thou shalt NEVER trust thy Pit Bull not to fight

    2.

Thou shalt contain thy Pit Bull securely when not supervised by an adult

    3.

Thou shalt NEVER leave thy adult Pit Bull alone and unsupervised with another dog

    4.

Thou SHALT attend obedience classes most faithfully with thy Pit Bull

    5.

Thou SHALT keep thy Pit Bull socialized with ALL KINDS of people

    6.

Thy Pit Bull wilt NEVER be allowed off-leash in a public place

    7.

Thy Pit Bull wilt NEVER be allowed to roam free in thy neighborhood, EVER!

    8.

Thou SHALT take thy well trained Pit Bull out in public and show him/her off - on leash for good breed PR!

    9.

Thy Pit Bull shalt go forth into the world as an ambassador of the pit bull breed

    10.

THOU ARE RESPONSIBLE FOR ANY WRONG DONE BY THY DOGS!

  4. Thank you for the compliments...do you really think he could be mixed with a Dane? 40 pounds is really big for this age? Could it be possible that he's older than what we think...when we got him, we were told he was 12 weeks old...at that time he weighed 30 pounds...the next week, he was 35...and he just keeps growing!

His face is starting to look more pit like, but these pics were taken about a week ago and he is almost changing daily right before our eyes....

Anyone else think my Lotto is a mutt mixed with something? I honestly don't mind, I know the pit is in him and that's what we are training him as..the "weaker" breed isn't much of a concern here since we love him no matter what, but I am very curious and the vet seems to think he's pure pit, but one of his parents must have been mixed with something...I wonder....

Thank you for the commandments as well...I believe in every one of them!

I think he could have something mixed in somewhere as well, as he does have quite a large body, and alot of extra skin around the neck. He might do a huge growth spurt now, then just stop and fill out a little. It will be easier to tell once he reaches more around a year or 2 of age.

You just never know when you get a dog and dont see the parents just what might be in there! lol Either way, he is a cute boy, and congrats! =)

Its possible he could be older than 4 months. Does he still have baby teeth ? If he has adult teeth he very well could be a little older than you first thought. Did you see his parents?

  7. Yeah, as he grows it's like one second he's got that Pit mouth..then he'll cock his head a certain way and his ears will hang longer and he could be a Lab Mix...then he pops his ears up and he's all Pit again...

His "Tude" is pure pit...while the boy is eager to learn and eager to please, when he gets testy he sure enough has that Pit tude where he's just testing us right now...are we ALWAYS the leader, or only sometimes?

We're practicing NILIF, and that is an amazing thing, he never gets to be in charge, not one time and so his "testing" moments are so few and far between I'm almost shocked when he DOESN'T do what we say.

We were told his mother was a somewhat small Brindle Pit, and Dad a very large Black pit. I didn't see with my own eyes, so I just take her word for it...he's freakin gorgeous! Healthy! That's all that matters at this point.

    Thanks for your response again!

    Hi Lotto's mom!

I think it's great how much you love your baby!

As for Lotto, he could be mixed. There are folks out there breeding 90 lb (& larger!) "pit bulls." Usually these dogs are pit bull x english bulldog or pit bull x molosser.

While I cannot say if he is pure or mixed, IMO the little guy does look like he might have a little Dane in him. Here is a pic of a Pit Bull x Dane cross for you to reference:

But either way, if Lotto is mixed or pure, he is still a cutie & it's great to see how much you love him! :)

(BTW, there are DNA tests offered by several companies that claim to be able to tell you the breed of your dog by examining genetic markers. Pit bulls & Great Danes aren't offered on the breed lists right now, but they may be in the future & it may be an option for you later on if you ever want to find out the real background on Lotto!)

I thought pitbull/dane when I looked at the pictures as well. He's an adorable boy no matter what he is!

  10. First of all, I can tell you if he indeed is mixed with Dane, I would be jumping over the moon with joy. I was raised with Danes as a baby and have always wanted one of my own, but only with a large yard and big dog house and all sorts of things...so if it's possible, then I'm even more happy.

Here is what I've recently found out...

We took him to the vet Sunday, this time I got my favorite vet of the group and he told me his thoughts.

    1) He is not 4 months old, his baby teeth are gone and adult teeth in...making him 5 months instead of 4. He said 4 weeks is hard to tell in the very beginning, so it's possible he was actually 16 weeks when we got him, not 12 weeks like we were told. When we got him, he didn't have any teeth, so it was easy to confuse him for younger than what he was.

    2) He looks to be pure pit bull...BUT in his bloodline, somewhere, there was definitely a mix...he can't say for certain if it's Dane (He said he will not get Dane Tall), Mastiff, or Lab...but he says it looks like at least both his parents must have been pit bulls.

    3) He's 42 pounds, he says if he's 5 months, he'll be about 75 pounds, if he's 4 months, he'll be about 100 pounds....give or take, he's healthy and beautiful and that's all that matters!

So, we'll just have to see how he grows to be and what he looks like...I can't believe how much he looks like the Dane mix in the post above!! Incredible!!

Sooooo, just wanted to give you all updates on my boy!!
