Crate eater

I am getting a dog from a friend in a couple weeks with a long history of eating crates. He will be a house dog. Any chances I will ever be able to contain him in a regular one for travel if I put him in an indestructible one for a while?

    Any advice is appreciated.

    Thanks,

    Genevieve

I know some people who's dog is very talented at breaking out of crates. In order to travel with him, they put him in one of those expensive aluminum dog boxes. I would imagine with a crate-buster, you could travel with him in a normal crate, provided someone is right there to tell him to knock off that mess as soon as he starts. I wouldn't take such a dog, stick him in a crate in a hotel room and go out to dinner, though.

ETA: I would probably use a wire crate over a fiberglass one, too. And put zip ties all over it to keep the dog from causing the crate to collapse (if its one of those folding jobs).

He is fine loose in the car. He will have an indestructible crate for the house. I am curious if anyone has transitioned a dog back to a regular wire crate that used to eat out of crates after using an indestructible one (if that makes any sense).

I guess I just want to know if there is any hope of ever getting him out of the big, heavy, indestructible metal crate after he learns he can't chew out.

He rips the tops off the Vari kennels. Not sure what he will do to the wire crate, but I am sure it will be quick and ugly.

    Thanks,

    Genevieve

I swapped my "crate eater" over from one of the plastic ones to a wire one and needless to say that didn't stop him from trying to get out of it. He did however in about a week stop trying to chew out and now he's back in the plastic one with about a head size hole he chewed in it previous to being moved to the metal crate.

I would suggest that if you do buy a wire style crate don't get one of the cheap ones.

If you can afford one of those "jail cell" crates then go for it! A welder might be able to make you something like that, too. (My husband did ironwork for a while, and made an iron crate for a friend of ours.) I personally use wire crates for travel because I need something that will fold down and go in the trunk. But if I had a crate-buster, I wouldn't leave them unattended in one.

I bought one that was for a great dane size dog it was like the 1st one you posted after 2 failed attempts in one's like the second one but BM is right if you can fine a metal worker they could probably build you one to any spec you want I found a guy to build my kennels for I'm not big on the chain link style ones.

Yeah, I can get the jail cell for home, would just be nice to not have to pack on of them in the car for travel...

    I understand that.

get a single compartment dog box no need to go back to plastic crate. Dog will damage mouth and teeth chewing out of those plastic crates. Had one chew through the wire cage door as well. This fella has some nice boxes...
