Florence,SC -- Students at one Florence middle school hope to go before county council next Thursday to talk about Breed Specific Legislation.

That's legislation that would prohibit residents from owning, breeding, or raising particular types of dogs, like pit bulls.

"I want them to see the other side because a lot of people, they don’t have the background knowledge of these type of animals and they get the wrong idea," said teacher Brian Harvey.

County council officials say they are not considering such legislation.

The seventh grade class from Southside Middle, however, is proposing to block such legislation from ever passing in Florence County.

"We believe that all of these animals should be allowed to be owned by anybody and this legislation that we’re proposing, or our policy that we’re proposing, is to block any legislation that would disallow us from owning these type of animals," said Harvey.

The project is part of a program developed by the South Carolina Bar.

What a wonderful civics lesson. WAY TO GO.. I would be more than happy to hire anyone of of these people as my attorney. They understand the Constitution and the meaning of FREEDOM. Thank you to the South Carolina Bar for making this program possible and thank you to the students for defending our rights to own the dog of our choice without prejudice.

Go, kids! I'll tell ya, as often as that "think of the children!" crap gets thrown around, its too sweet to hear that it can go the other way. I wish I could be there to hear those kids speaking against BSL.

That's awesome. Its good that these kids are learning and spreading the truth about these breeds. There are so many people AND Teachers that slander the name of our breeds and have no clue themselves how these breeds truely are. I too wuold love to hear them.

Our children are one of the keys to keeping the APBT around for years to come. Most are still innocent & too young to have been poisoned by todays media and organizations regarding the "PIT BULL". I love taking the time to speak to kids in the neighborhood about this breed. Besides, 90% of the time there the only ones running up to me asking to pet the dog.:D
