Rough puppy play

Those from the bloodlines section know I have 2 young pups (my male is a little older than 3 months, my female a touch over 4 months). Both fathers are (good dogs) and their are about 25 ch's Gd Ch's, POR's and Roms in the peds so the dogs are likely to become red hot eventually.

For the next five weeks I am slammed teaching a double summer course load so I leave my pups out in the secure back yard for about one hour in the morning, 45 minutes in the afternoon and one hour at night. The rest of the time they are indoors/crated. I either supervise them when they play or I listen while I grade papers from the house. Sometimes they start to scrap a bit and I step outside and settle them down.

The problem is that they are getting pretty seriously marked up from their play. They are biting awfully hard for their age and they have a good collection of scabs to show for it. I am hoping to let them play this way for 4 more weeks and then I have some time off so I can start to excercise them separately. I have never had a dog turn on fully before 9 months but I hear about young pups having to be separated all the time. I am also concerned about animal control coming out (made 2 visits already) and seeing the marks on my pups.

I really want to wait as long as possible to separate them. I was hoping to not have to crate and rotate until they were older and able to be worked.

 

the question to ask yourself is, do you want to come home or step outside during their unsupervised play time and find a dead pup?

trust me, when we got our pup, my wife was like "oh but she's so cute. do we have to keep her crated up?"

when she hit 4-5 months old and started playing rough with our jrt, she saw it was no joke and didn't want to risk a dead dog.

she wasn't about chaining her either at first.

she's not a full-time chain dog, as we can let her in the house with out jrt while we are home, but my wife loves to have the chain spot out back because that's where she goes inbetween when we're home. or if we're occupied doing something. i leave for work about 10 am, she gets home at 5 pm. jrt is crated inside and apbt is on her chain out back. she gets crated inside at night.

if your dogs come from where you say they do, and you spent the money on them you've been advertising on-line here, then you should be more cautious and know you won't hear anything if it gets serious. you might here something being shaken around, and by that time it'll be too late and you'll have to spend another $1k+ to replace the dog. :rolleyes:

 

yeah bro I think you need to make sure that they are separated at all times. if they are anything like Hemi he stopped playin 3 months ago. I don't trust him at all...

 

I think you guys are right...no more unsupervised play time. The 2 adult dogs I had were always real quite while they were serious...just shaking out a hold and wagging their tale. I just am incredulous as how soon these 2 are starting. I come from the school, early to start early to quit but I know that modern dogs start early and bite harder.

The female immediately established dominance...she gets an ear hold and shakes it out, was wiping the floor w/ my little male. However, he is a throat dog...he gets her down and is on the throat hard. His breeder also thinks that he is going to down my female.

The only prob is that he wakes me up every morning at 5:30...I need to get him sleeping until 7.

So I suppose I have to start to closely supervise all play time and prepare to crate and rotate. I just wish they were old enough to start roadwork w/ my bike.

Hemi, besides conditioning are you good at "post accident" care? E-mail me your answer, lol.

 

good morning sunshine, take the advice given, hell u should know that just by the fact that the dogs bloodlines say they will be fire. My pup just reached 5 months and at this point she is completely unsafe to play with other dogs, including my big mutt that she's been around since i brought her home 3 months ago. she had to be separated from her littermates at 5 weeks because she would do nothing but tear into them all day long. Now that her BBBIIIIIIIGGGGG adult teeth are coming in i can't take any chances.
U need to set up chain spots for those pups ASAP, trust me they will be much better off, plus they will burn off energy from working the chain

 

I have one chain set up already...I will build another this weekend.

Dang, I just checked...I need to get a new breaking stick, lol. Should I call Stillwater? I just got some nice collars from them.

By the way, I have heard that there are not a lot of throat dogs. This guy just buries his head in there, or the chest or the rear stifle. My gal is definitely and ear dog, like to hold him out while she looks for something better...two diametrically contrasting style, very interesting. Man, I can't believe how soon these 2 are starting. Kids today.

 

They're never too young to start! One of mine was hot at 4 months when I brought him home. It took 2 long months to cool him off to our other dogs. He would scream at our other dogs non-stop. Now he only tries to get at dogs he doesn't know, but I still don't trust him with anything.

Don't take any chances separate those pups!

if you're concerned about them getting you up, get them on a chain earlier.

my dog still whines in her crate if my wife isn't up to let her out by 6 am, but you just deal with it (and she'll be two in sept).

and as much as we all like to believe our pups are "on fire," it's just puppy rage. every breed of dog that i've come across has puppy rage while they are young, and those little teeth do some quick damage. you just need to be careful. hell, my sister-in-law's yorkshire terrier was a mean little thing when it was 2-6 months old. she'd back my parents jrts into a corner. :rolleyes:

i thought my dog was "cranked" before she was a year. now that she's approaching two, her outward signs of aggression have leveled off, but i still know she can't play nice with other dogs. now her tail just wags and she gets a nasty "1000 yard stare" looking through whatever she has her attention focused on. that's why she's inside loose with the jrt only when we're both home....otherwise it's crate and rotate. it's not something to risk, having to separate two dogs by yourself if they get worked up.

hope all works out for you, you have no accidents, and we don't see you as a statistic on the news. it'd be bad if we saw "dr_jitus's apbts who came from match dogs since he went blasting that on the internet (along with some other stuff i don't know is too wise to be posting that you've put on here for all to read) mauled his neighbors labradoodle early this morning and tore it to shreds...."

i'll admit, i was new to the breed when i got my pup, but by the time i was walking her on a leash, you can bet i had two of those on hand. that's one thing i learned real quick (is like the boyscouts :p) be prepared.

 

Ok... is it just me or did I miss something in an earlier post..

WHY has animal control been to your house TWICE already and your pups are only 3-4 months old...

 

hope you got good brakes on that specialized lol. i have a fixed gear monocog 29er and my 6month female will pull that bitch to the ground to get at something, meaning im holding the back tire completely still with my legs but it doesnt matter to a bulldog. somethin to think bout:cool:

Yeah, this story just seems strange.

 

At the rate your going with your posts I'd be more worried of HSUS coming to my house.

Keep an eye on your pups while they play and keep them seperated when your not around to over see what they are doing.

P.S. You might want to tame down how freely you speak, some folks might get the wrong idea.

And I think I will take the advice and not post here anymore. Nothing personal and I do appreciate all the advice but I don't want to be caught up in any dry snitching scenario.
