    JOURNAL REPORTER
    Published: December 12, 2008

MILLERS CREEK - Authorities have seized 127 pit bulls in Wilkes County at what the Humane Society of the United States says is one of the nation's largest breeding operations for fighting dogs.

Investigators spent more than 14 hours in a raid Wednesday at Wildside Kennels at 5636 Mertie Road in the mountains of northwest Wilkes County.
The raid capped a three-year investigation by the Humane Society of the United States, in cooperation with Wilkes County authorities.

Arrested were the owner of Wildside Kennels, Edward Anthony Faron, 61; his son Donni Juan Casanova, 18; and Amanda Grace Lunsford, 25.

They were each charged with one felony count of dog fighting and baiting. Each posted a $2,500 bond and was released. Other charges are pending, authorities said.

The kennel did not appear to be a place where people came to see dog fights but rather was a breeding operation where some of the animals bore scars consistent with dog fighting, said Chris Shew, the chief deputy for the Wilkes County Sheriff's Office.

The dogs -- 62 adults and 65 puppies -- are being housed in undisclosed locations. The dogs will be held as evidence pending a court order or a trial.

Veterinarians examined each of the adult dogs at the scene. Some of the dogs were in wire kennel enclosures, and many of the dogs were staked out at individual dog houses, Shew said.

The dogs appeared to have been fed and cared for, authorities said. There were no incidents during the raid.

A forensic veterinarian who is part of the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals' CSI Unit was at the raid to evaluate the seized dogs for evidence of animal fighting.

Faron is well-known in the dog-fighting world, said John Goodwin, the manager of animal-fighting issues for the Humane Society of the United States.

The Wildside Kennels' Web site includes a disclaimer that reads: "No dogs bred, raised or sold for illegal purposes."

Such a disclaimer is common among people who sell fighting dogs, Goodwin said.

"This is a man who is nationally known," he said. "We recognize him as one of the top 10 breeders of fighting dogs in the United States."

Faron was convicted of dog fighting in Alamance County in 1989, Goodwin said. The crime was a misdemeanor then.

Investigators seized thousands of items during the raid, Shew said, mostly paperwork that includes records of sales. He declined to discuss what other evidence was seized.

Goodwin said that Faron sold dogs throughout the United States and possibly overseas.

Attempts to reach Wildside Kennels yesterday were unsuccessful.

The kennel's Web site featured sales listings for dogs with such names as Black Beauty, Buckfifty, Tugboat Annie, Dracula, Little Nicky, Vader and Wicked. The online ads featured pedigrees of the dogs, but no prices.
In general, a pit-bull puppy from a kennel might sell for $500 to $750, Goodwin said. An adult dog that is considered a good fighting prospect might go for more than $1,000, while a champion fighting dog might bring more than $10,000.

Casanova was featured in several videos that could be viewed yesterday on Faron's MySpace page. In one of the videos, Casanova showed puppies that were in a fenced kennel.

"We have these two good-looking little puppies," he said. "As you see they're nice and fat and healthy." He went on to show other puppies and talk about their lineage.

Faron is also well known as a co-author of The Complete Gamedog -- A Guide to Breeding and Raising the American Pit Bull Terrier, a book that includes graphic accounts of gruesome injuries inflicted on fighting dogs. The book contains a disclaimer that says that the accounts are fictional.

The kennel is in an isolated part of Wilkes County, roughly between N.C. 16 and N.C. 18. Property records show that Faron owns about 24 acres there.

Shew said he asked Faron why he had moved there and said that Faron talked about how beautiful the area is.

The isolation also offered a place where barking dogs wouldn't bother neighbors, authorities say.

Goodwin said that a raid on an urban dog fighting breeder might net 12 or so dogs, while a raid in a rural area might typically get more than 24 dogs.
He described a seizure of 127 dogs as "gigantic."

It's the largest dog seizure ever in Wilkes County, County Attorney Tony Triplett said.

Wilkes County authorities cooperated with the Humane Society of the United States' three-year investigation. County authorities were particularly active in the investigation over the last few months and also spent time finding places to keep the dogs so the county animal shelter wouldn't be overwhelmed, Shew and Triplett said.

Goodwin said he was impressed with local authorities.

"If I was a dog fighter I'd stay out of Wilkes County," he said.

The HSUS is working hard to stomp out all the major apbt bloodlines. We as a community need to be fighting back. Stop-bsl has been emailing attorney generals and news stations offering REAL information about the HSUS and facts about cases such as the patricks and boudreauxs. We are in hopes that the media will get an itch for the truth at some point or the attorney generals will stop letting the HSUS use their law enforcement to carry out these witch hunts.

PLEASE EMAIL NEWS MEDIA AND THE ATTORNEY GENERAL IN THEIR STATE.

Here is some of the ?'s that we sent to the Arizona Attorney General

    1. Were you aware that John Goodwin had previously been told by a judge that he could not be an expert witness on dog fighting because he had no training in animal physiology or law enforcement. Also because he had no formal education and had not finished high school and told the judge he learned about dog fighting by reading books on the subject. This was in 2006. We can provide the transcripts if needed. But he is the head of the HSUS fighting division.

    2. Is the AG office aware that a non-law enforcement party, Desiree Bender, interrogated a minor child outside the presence of their parents and a lawyer? Desiree Bender is the HSUS head in Arkansas. The animal enforcement laws in Arizona give humane society's authority to investigate. BUT she works for the Humane Society of the United States. Does a lobbyist group fit the definition of humane society as they do not operate shelters or physical humane societies? With that said does she have the authority to investigate or interfere with an investigation on behalf of law enforcement? And if so what is the law on jurisdiction as she is from Arkansas.

    3. The couple was found not guilty, but most of their animals are already gone but what is to become of the ones who are still alive and have been spayed or neutered and adopted. Will the state push for those animals to be returned?

    4. Are you aware of a similar trial in October of Guy and Floyd
Boudreaux where 56 of their pets where killed 3 years earlier and where also found not guilty. They where called the biggest dog fighting breeders by the HSUS who also stated the same about the Pima County couple.

    5. Will there be an investigation into wether or not these people where qualified to provide law enforcement with assistance and if anyone had done homework on the people they where using as experts. Background checks ect. As at least one has a criminal history involving terrorist activity. Or if anyone saw a conflict of interest in a group who is against breeding animals helping investigate an animal breeder.

You can direct further inquiries to research@stop-bsl.com

We have transcripts, first hand information from lawyers on our side and the people who were investigated and had dogs killed. If enough CITIZENS demand that they look at what is happening instead if sweeping the killing of a bloodline of dogs under the rug it may actually happen.

    Stay silent no longer!

[FONT=Arial,sans-serif]Some stuff that should be mentioned when writing the local papers. . .

You should know that John P. Goodwin is a known domestic terrorist, having worked for the Animal Liberation Front, a radical group which carried out fires and bombings of research facilities and other "evil animal abusers." In several of these incidents people died and Goodwin who was their spokesman at the time was quoted having said he was "thrilled" about the outcome of one such incident. Furthermore he never gradauted high school and was thrown out of cases in Arizona most recently when his status as an "expert" witness was challenged. He has stated under oath that all he knows about dog fighting he learned from books.

Not to mention similar raids in other states have garnered much publicity for the HSUS with little truth or results to show for it. For example Guy and Floyd Boudreaux in Louisiana were raided 3 years ago. The HSUS and Goodwin called them "dogfighting king pins." 56 dogs including puppies and pregnant females were killed by order of the HSUS. However, three years of stalling later and the HSUS alongside the prosecutor looked incredibly stupid when the judge dismissed the case and acquitted the son and father stating there was no real evidence that they ever did anything outside loving and raising these animals.

In Arizona 3 homes were raided earlier this year. The home with the most dogs, that of Emily Dennis and Mahon Patrick yielded a large nubmer of dogs. However, when they saw their day in court again their was little to no evidence and the couple was acquitted, but their dogs were already largely dead.

The HSUS is mainly concerned with the killing and eventual extinction of the American Pit Bull Terrier. They are leading a witchhunt for dog breeders who may or may not have ever fought dogs. Prior to the late 1980's dog fighting was legal and many older dog breeders will tell you they did participate, but that after it was made illegal they turned to such competitions as conformation and weight pull. These dog breeders did this because they loved their dogs and changed with the times in order to keep them from being brutally killed. Time has shown us though that the HSUS can successfully kill all your dogs without evidence against you.

Please, if you have any heart at all write a story demanding that these dogs not be killed until a trial has actually deemed them fighting dogs- at the very least. The recent past has shown that these raids are executed entirely in order to kill the dogs and once that is accomplished the local authorities are left holding the bag only to find out that all the "evidence" Mr. Gooodwin told them would make a great case is no more than every day dog owning equiptment and hearsay.

If you are interested in court transcripts from prior cases or other detailed information please email research@stop-bsl.com

Below are some different blogs which all have information regarding different raids the HSUS has executed and the end result they had.

Dog breeder denies involvement in fighting
    by Jule Hubbard

The owner of a pit bull terrier dog kennel on Mertie Road in Millers Creek charged with felony dog fighting and baiting Wednesday maintains his innocence.

In an interview today, Edward A. Faron said he was a victim of entrapment, referring to two men who came to his house Monday and said they wanted to buy pit bulls for dog fighting. Faron, 61, said he now realized the two men were undercover officers.

Needing money due to difficult economic conditions, said Faron, “I took the bait and started telling them what I thought they wanted to hear” when they asked for dogs for fighting.

Faron said he otherwise didn’t knowingly sell dogs for fighting. Authorities haven’t said that they believe organized dog fights occurred on Faron’s property on Mertie Road.

Although he was convicted of dog fighting and sentenced to a year in jail in Alamance County in June 1989, Faron said he didn’t engage in that illegal activity now. He also said he didn’t knowingly sell dogs for fighting.

Faron emphasized the good care provided for the 127 pit bulls seized Wednesday at his Wildside Kennels.

He said one of the dogs seized, a male named Vadar, had scars from being in dog fights before he bought the dog. He said another one, a male named Popeye, received an eye injury from a tree root while digging in the ground.

Faron, originally from Ohio, said he became involved with training dogs when he returned to the United States after serving in the Vietnam War in 1970. He said he started breeding pit bulls in 1987 and started Wildside Kennels after moving to Millers Creek in 1996.

According to county records, Faron has owned about 17 acres on Mertie Road since 1998 and an adjoining 7.4 acres since 2001. The property is about three miles from where Mertie Road intersects with Vannoy Road and about five miles from where Mertie Road intersects with N.C. 18 North.

A MySpace website has videos showing pit bulls and other scenes at Wildside Kennels. It also features Faron and Donni “Don” Juan Casanova, one of the other two people charged with felony dog fighting and baiting Wednesday, talking about the kennels. Faron said he is the legal guardian for Casanova, who turns 19 this month.

A website for Wildside Kennels, at www.renegadewebdesign.net, states, “No dogs bred, raised or sold for illegal purposes!” and lists extensive pedigree information for pit bulls at the kennel.

Faron said he sells pit bull puppies for an average of $500 each. Wilkes Sheriff Dane Mastin said authorities believe Faron sold dogs for around $1,200 to $7,500 each.

He said he also started the Appalachian Pit Bull Club, which he said has dog shows at the Taylorsville Lions Club Park in Taylorsville.

After the Humane Society of the United States released news of the seizure of the 127 dogs and the charges against Faron and two other people Thursday morning, numerous people involved with pit bulls indicated their support of Faron and their belief in his innocence on Internet blogs.

Kimberley Thomson of the Pender County town of Hampstead, who bought a pit bull from Faron and entered pit bulls in dog shows, said she opposed dog fighting and didn’t believe Faron was involved in that illegal activity.

In an e-mail to the Wilkes Journal-Patriot, Ms. Thomson called Faron “a very compassionate, good hearted, dog loving breeder. I’ve seen for myself how much his animals love him. I’ve watched him hobble with his bad knees into their lots to love on them, as their tails wag so hard and they drench his face with kisses.”

She added, “We show UKC/ADBA registered American pit bull terriers for conformation. We do not associate with dog fighters. I abhor the practice and would not keep company with anyone who gave me the slightest inclination that they fought or sold fighting dogs, as I love this breed far too much. I’ve grown to love and admire Ed Faron personally as well as professionally. He breeds for conformation excellence and has a great love for the breed.

She called Faron “a walking book of information” about pit bulls.

“When you see over and over again the American pit bull terrier breeders being accused, uprooted, losing their livelihood and their animals destroyed, you’ve got to wonder what the ‘real’ agenda of HSUS (Humane Society of the U.S.) is,” she said.

Referring to people acquitted in other dog fighting cases, Ms. Thomson said she believed the HSUS’ goal was “to abolish this amazing breed.”

Two Animal Fighting Rings Busted This Week

NEW YORK -- Wednesday brought two investigative conclusions for the Humane Society of the United States, as well as the liberation of 127 dogs and nearly 2,000 birds.

The two successful raids of dogfighting and cockfighting operations in McGrady, N.C., and Humboldt County, Calif., respectively, were announced in HSUS press releases yesterday.

The HSUS has conducted as many as three raids in a single day, but this week's progress certainly impacts the organization's "active and engaged effort to root out animal fighting," John Goodwin, manager of animal-fighting issues for the HSUS, told Pet Pulse.

The dogfighting ring bust involved the seizure of 127 Pit Bulls -- 62 adults and 65 puppies. The dogs appeared in relatively good health, according to media reports, and were housed in wire kennel enclosures.

Wilkes County Sheriff's Office, Wilkes County Animal Control agency and the HSUS were all involved with the raid, which marks the culmination of a four year investigation.

The site was dubbed one of the nation's largest breeding operations for fighting dogs by the HSUS, according to The Winston-Salem Journal.

Edward Faron, 61, owner of Wildside Kennels, was arrested, alongside his son, Donni Casanova, and Amanda Lunsford, 25.

Faron is an established figure in dogfighting circuits, as he has been previously convicted for dogfighting.

"This is a man who is nationally known," said John Goodwin, manager of animal-fighting issues for the HSUS. "We recognize him as one of the top 10 breeders of fighting dogs in the United States."

Faron is also the co-author of "The Complete Gamedog -- A Guide to Breeding and Raising the American Pit Bull Terrier," in which he explains how to breed and raise dogs used for fighting. Some of the details in the book, Goodwin said, are "just brutal. Horrific."

Faron, Casanova and Lunsford were all charged with felony counts of dogfighting and baiting, but were released after each posting $2,500 bonds.

The charges could lead to a prison sentence of four to 10 months.

"The raid of this suspected dogfighting operation is the culmination of an extensive investigation -- and dogfighters everywhere should worry that they could be next," said Chris Schindler, deputy manager of the HSUS' animal fighting law enforcement, in the release.

Illegal cockfighting rings could also take a hit from the HSUS' recent seizure of 1,400 game cocks and 500 game fowl on a Humboldt County, Calif., property, which Goodwin labeled a "gigantic" operation.

While no arrests have been made, officers appeared optimistic about the raid's significance.

"Today's raid is an important step towards eradicating this cruel, criminal activity in California," said Eric Sakach, director of the HSUS' West Coast regional office, in a different release, also issued Wednesday.

Veterinarians are now examining the roosters and hens for scars, drugs and other signs of fighting. Animal control officers also uncovered steroids, trophies and 72 blades, which could have been attached to roosters' legs during fights.

While authorities did not find evidence that cockfights actually took place on the property, one police officer said the property owners were likely involved with outside rings.

"I know of places where people have fought them in downtown Eureka," Humboldt County Sheriff's Deputy Todd Fulton told The Times-Standard.

The raid was the result of a collaborative effort from the San Cruz County Animal Services, California Department of Justice, United States Marshal's Office, San Bernadino County Sheriff's Office, California Department of Food and Agriculture and Amador County Animal Services.

Suspects in the case have reportedly been identified. Those charged with possession of birds for fighting or cockfighting could receive up to six months in prison and a maximum fine of $1,000.

Cockfighting is a felony in 37 states; in California, the gambling practice warrants a misdemeanor charge on a first offense, and a felony on the second.

The law's relative leniency made it a prime sport for the breeding facility, Goodwin says.

"It wasn't particularly surprising to see a large cockfighting operation to pop up in California, especially because this guy set up right on the other side of Oregon, where it is a felony," Goodwin said.

"The law sends a strong message to cockfighters, that they are not really going to have to pay a price."

    John Goodwin Exposed...

It ain't necessarily so if it comes from the Humane Society of the United States

Hint for journalism students: take those HSUS press releases for what they're worth. Jack shit.

Goodwin, HSUS's "issues expert" on dogfighting has just one mission: get HSUS propaganda in front of the public. That's what he's paid to do, and that's what he does. All day, everyday.

Nothing but propaganda from the Humane Society of the United States

The media had better wise up and start checking the "facts" HSUS and their "Issues Expert" John Goodwin feeds them. This could get embarassing.

Take the pickle Metro -- which styles itself as the "world's largest global newspaper" now finds itself in.

Metro, a long, long way from the Wall Street Journal and a publication whose finances are shaky at best, got royally snookered by Goodwin and HSUS earlier this week.

Or maybe it was a simple cash transaction -- money paid out by HSUS for media placement in a financially-stressed, third rate publication?

To quote Metro's story on how New York is the "capital of dogfighting"--

"For 30 years, the Sporting Dog Journal, the central organ of the dog-fighting world, came out of New York. “It had 6,000 subscribers and ran 120 pages a month, with several hundred detailed fight reports,” Goodwin said."

Metro reports old "news" like it happened yesterday

Get a clue, Metro. The publisher of the Sporting Dog Journal was busted five years ago on dogfight-related charges. Back in 2003.

Friccione went to prison. Despite the "weak" laws in New York.

    Expertise from books

The Metro article then passes on Goodwin's titillating rendition of what an organized dogfight entails. But don't mistake his description for expertise. You can get the same thing from one of Richard Stratton's books -- available via Amazon.com -- if you're really in to that kind of stuff. Did Goodwin get his "expert knowledge" from a book?

I think the facination with gruesome dogfight material in some circles -- particularly some "rescue" groups -- is similar to porn addiction. Some people get their rocks off in the sickest ways.

Which makes publications like "Metro" -- and John Goodwin -- panderers.

Just make shit up: "NY is the dogfight capital of the country" ?

Not according to the ASPCA, its not. The American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals, which is charged with animal cruelty law -- including laws against dogfighting --enforcement in New York City says. . .

"Organized dog fighting in New York City does not appear to be prevalent, and the ASPCA rarely sees arrests for such activity."

Fake "dogfight crisis" based on no information

The ASPCA also comments that. . .

"Currently, there are no reliable statistics [that address the prevalence of dog fighting state -by-state]. This is an underground, illegal activity so it is almost impossible to get accurate information about its prevalence."

So other than its own press release, what kind of information did HSUS and Goodwin base themselves on? Huh?

Imagine of CNN got wind of all of this. How humiliating for Metro.

Controlling the news: HSUS's bevy of friendly bloggers

Patrick Kwan, HSUS's New York State Director, emailed the Metro story link out to his list of friendly bloggers. And they dutifully put the story out there.

Hey, in a world where a lot of people can't distinguish between a blog and a news article, why not?

    Another internet "truth" successfully created.

John Goodwn is an expert. An expert liar.

Unless you want to dance to a tune piped out by convicted terrorist, employed by an animal extremist organization which despite all its propaganda does not operate a single animal shelter, check the facts before you believe a word of what John Goodwin says.

You're in for a big surprise.

HSUS Dogfight Czar John Goodwin's Army of Snitches

HSUS latest weapon of mass destruction: its network of snitches.

Drop a dime. Claim the $5000 bounty HSUS offers on dogfighters. Kill a few dogs.

All in a day's work for self-appointed, untrained, unqualified vigilantes inspired by the Humane Society of the United States and its propaganda urging neighbors to rat out neighbors.

    Tinkering with probable cause.

According to HSUS' fake dogfighting expert, John Goodwin, the sight of a couple of dogs responsibly and humanely tethered on private property is enough to trigger an accusation of criminal --felonious -- activity.

People should call police if they see several pit bulls kept on chains in someone's yard, [Goodwin] said. That could be a sign that a dog-fighting ring is working in the area.

Goodwin turns dog owners into felons

Goodwin doesn't mention it, of course, but no lawful search of private property can be conducted without "probable cause" -- a reasonable belief that a person has committed a crime. A search warrant requires probable cause.

Under the law, there can be no fishing expeditions. No searches because John Goodwin says a couple of dogs in someone's backyard is a bad thing. Not yet, at least.

But Goodwin's Army of Snitches doesn't know, and won't care, about the law. They have been indoctrinated with the belief that the mere presence of several tethered pit bulls means a crime has been committed.

HSUS uses snitches to subvert the U. S. Constitution

By building a case for making the simple ownership of more than one pit bull prima facie evidence of dogfighting, Goodwin begins the process of dismantling the civil rights of all dog owners.

The Fourth Amendment protects U. S. citizens from unreasonable search and seizure.

Even U. S. citizens that own pit bulls have civil rights.

Its kind of like Goodwin's continued fixation with New York being the "dogfight capital of the world."

The idea that a couple of "pit bulls" tethered in someone's backyard means that they are dogfighters is bullshit.

    But its scary, too.

    V is for vendetta

People phone in complaints about each other's dogs because they're mad at each other.

Because someone had a loud party.

    Or doesn't mow the lawn.

    Or hasn't paid the rent.
How many dogs will die because of vendettas tips from concerned citizens ? How many dog owners will be wrongfully convicted ?

John Goodwin wants pit bulls dead

While many pit bulls can make good and safe pets, dogs bred from lines that have been trained to fight can be aggressive, he said. It's very difficult and costly to rehabilitate a dog once it's been taught to be aggressive, Goodwin said. Most frequently, the dogs need to be put down.

What the hell does "dogs bred from lines that have been trained to fight" mean?

Goodwin's Army of Snitches -- deployed against everyday dogs and dog owners -- won't sweat the details. They've been incentivized. They are on a mission. And the Humane Society of the United States is at the controls.

ALF Terrorist John Goodwin: HSUS Dogfight Czar

Here's John Goodwin, the Humane Society of the United States' "nationally recognized expert" on animal fighting.

HSUS says Goodwin is an expert.

HSUS says Goodwin has been "active in the field of animal protection since 1989".

HSUS is lying about John Goodwin

First of all, that's a freaking Animal Liberation Front shirt Goodwin is wearing.

ALF was characterized by J. F. Jarboe, the FBI's Domestic Terrorism Section Chief during Congression testimony on eco-terrorism in 2002 as. . .

". . .one of the most active extremist elements in the United States."

Goodwin himself stated "my goal is the abolition of all animal agriculture."

From dairy farms to Thanksgiving turkeys. . .its all got to go according to John Goodwin.

Active in the field of animal protection? The guy's on the fringes of the already extreme animal rights movement, and a convicted criminal.
During the 90's--when HSUS claims he was "protecting animals" he was actually one of the most infamous domestic terrorists in the country.

    Goodwin's lengthy police record

Activist Cash details Goodwin's long history of arrests and convictions:
He was arrested and convicted for being the ringleader of a crew that vandalized fur retailers in multiple states during the 1990s. The animal-rights watchdog newspaper Animal People News profiled Goodwin in 2000, noting that he “gleefully announced a string of Animal Liberation Front mink releases and arsons against furriers and fur farms” while a “spokesman” for the underground terrorist group.

Goodwin also handled the media after a Petaluma, California, slaughterhouse arson in February 1997. But he really shocked the public with his comments on the March 1997 arson at a farmer’s feed co-op in Utah. Referring to a fire that caused almost $1 million in damage and could easily have killed a family sleeping on the premises, Goodwin told the Deseret News, “We’re ecstatic."

HSUS tried to clean up his history--virtually re-inventing Goodwin's background--but the fact is that HSUS's dogfighting czar is a convicted terrorist. Someone with strong ties to the most violent and irresponsible elements in the animal extremist movement.

    Gee. Thanks, HSUS.

Authorities arrested three people on one count each of felony dog fighting and baiting at their homes on Mertie Road in Millers Creek Wednesday and spent most of that rainy day hauling away 127 pit bull dogs from nearby Wildside Kennels with assistance of animal control officials from Wilkes and Mecklenburg counties.

The arrests of Edward Anthony Faron, 61, Donni "Don" Juan Casanova, 18, and Amanda Grace Lunsford, 25, culminated an investigation of a suspected dog fighting operation by the Wilkes Sheriff's Department, Wilkes County Animal Control and the Humane Society of the U.S. that began over three years ago. Authorities identified Faron as Wildside Kennels' owner.

All three were released from custody later Wednesday under secured bonds of $2,500 each. Authorities said additional charges are pending and are being cautious about releasing details due to the nature of the case.

Law enforcement officials said the investigation led them to believe Faron was one of the nation’s largest breeders of pit bulls used for fighting for 10 to 15 years.

Wilkes Sheriff Dane Mastin said the charges resulted from evidence gathered during the three-year investigation, including through undercover work.

Mastin said the charges were filed under a section of a state dog fighting statute that makes it illegal to possess or provide dogs for dog fighting. “Baiting” refers to harassing a tethered animal.

If convicted, the people charged could be sentenced to between four and 10 months in prison.

He said authorities have no evidence indicating organized dog fighting occurred on or near the Wildside Kennels property.

Mastin said investigators found documents, photos and paraphernalia pertaining to dog fighting while searching Wednesday. He said scars on some of the dogs seized were consistent with dog fighting.

Chief Deputy Chris Shew said about a dozen people, including Wilkes Sheriff’s Department officers, went to Faron’s doublewide mobile home and the nearby mobile home of Casanova and Ms. Lunsford in two teams with search warrants about 7:30 a.m. Wednesday. Shew said the suspects were there as the homes were searched and didn’t resist.

Shew said some of the 127 pit bulls were in the kennel’s fenced enclosure and others were chained to stakes near dog houses in nearby woods. About half of the dogs were puppies.

Faron was convicted of dog fighting in Alamance County in 1989 and was described in a Humane Society of the U.S. press release as a known “breeder of pit bull bloodlines that have a strong following in the criminal underground of dogfighting nationwide.”

A book he co-authored, called “The Complete Gamedog—A Guide to Breeding and Raising the American Pit Bull Terrier,” has graphic accounts (identified as fictional) of injuries inflicted or suffered by dogs used for fighting.

Wilkes Animal Control Director Junior Simmons, involved with the case for about 17 hours Wednesday, said he didn’t know of any larger seizure of dogs as part of a dog fighting investigation than the one on Wednesday. Humane Society of the U.S. officials said it was among the largest.

Three of the county’s five other animal control officers were also on the scene.

Simmons said the 127 pit bulls were taken away with help of Charlotte-Mecklenburg Animal Control personnel with four vans. A tractor-trailer belonging to the Humane Society of the U.S. also was used to transport dogs.

He said the pit bulls were being kept as evidence at an undisclosed location until the completion of court proceedings in the case, with a goal of moving through court as rapidly as possible.

“If the state wins the case, the dogs will be euthanized, as called for under the county’s Animal Control Ordinance, based on the dogs being trained and used for fighting,” he said, adding that the dogs were therefore considered dangerous.

The pit bulls weren’t taken to the Wilkes Animal Control Shelter in Wilkesboro, which only has capacity for about 60 dogs. Citing concerns about possible action by animal rights groups or other security issues, Simmons and other officials wouldn’t say where the dogs were being kept.

Simmons said a person called his office several years ago with a complaint about Faron raising dogs used for fighting all over the nation.

“We went to the property and talked to him in 2003. It was very unusual to see over 100 pit bulls on the same property. While we were looking at ways to find out more, the Humane Society of the United States called us and wanted to discuss it about three years ago,” he said.

Authorities said preparations for Wednesday’s search included prior consultation with the local district attorney’s office, County Attorney Tony Triplett and Commissioner Charles Sink, before Commissioner Zach Henderson replaced Sink as chairman.

Chris Schindler, deputy manager of animal fighting law enforcement for the Humane Society of the U.S., recently told authorities here that a connection between Wilkes and dog fighting in Georgia had been uncovered.

Schindler said he was impressed by the work of the Wilkes Sheriff’s Department and Wilkes Animal Control Department. “Those guys did a great job…. It was a very successful raid and should have a rippling effect on other people doing this kind of crime,” he added.

He said Dr. Melinda Merck, forensic veterinarian and leader of the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals’ Crime Scene Investigation Unit, assisted with the raid and evaluated the seized dogs for evidence of dog fighting.

He said his organization offers a $5,000 reward for information leading to the arrest and conviction of people involved in animal fighting, which is made possible through a grant from the Holland M. Ware Charitable Foundation.
    *
Schindler said availability of this reward, investigative efforts and difficult economic conditions combined to reduce the size and number of organized dog fights recently, but that they still occurred.

  13. The really sad part is people are still talking all kinds of shit on the internet. Like they forgot how to shut their mouth. Everywhere I go I see more and more personal information about him and his family and situation. Why must everyone be so impatient to spill the beans? Does it make people feel cool? Center of attention? What is it?

If you really care, help them out and shut your trap! Al of the personal crap is doing more harm than good.

Basic information is plenty and is all that is needed.

^ this right here should be clue enough to anyone with half a brain- but no, we STILL to this very day have people who will talk of things that they really shouldnt, with people they DONT KNOW!!!
i said it before, i will say it again-if someone contacts you/comes to your yard and makes even MENTION of "dogfighting" or getting dogs for fighting, or asking your OPINION on how the dogs would turn out -you need to politely tell them no and escort them off your property. i dont care if they offer you $10K- we ~should~ be smarter that that, esp in this day and age. but no, people will sell to anyone with $$$$, post on Feds-Online putting record, times-hell even calling weights!!!! assinine! if that is your bag-those who NEED to know, know. why open yourself up to scrutiny is beyond me:confused:
