Well my pup is 7 months old 60 pounds and pretty lean. With all the snow outside he has more energy then I can handle. He does two three mile walks a day and is still all go go go. I take him outside to play all the time and it doesn't do it so I have decided to get a mill to help bring him down some.

I can't afford a slat mill which unfortunatly I think would be the best for taking away the energy. I also have zero interest in building one before anyone suggests it. So I guess I am getting a carpet mill. I know of Colby's mills but I just don't like the looks of them. I have only seen them in pictures but that is just the impression I get. I know grand carpet mills sells some and I like the look but I don't know how good they are.

I also don't know things like how long can they run, how often and any other tips and tricks. I have heard you can do kidney damage from running too long and whether or not it is true I don't want to chance it. Any information would be greatly appreciated.

Well he will be 8 months on Feb 4. I am not going to be conditioning him or anything. I just want to be able to put him on there so he can burn off some more steam in addition to our regular walks.

the colby mill will still be standing strong well after the grand carpet mill has come undone (i.e. you are not going to find better craftsmanship than a colby mill)

what part of the colby mill dont you like? you say "looks", but just what exactly?
i personally think the grand carpet mills are fine if you are looking at something disposable. yes, you WILL spend a little more on the colby mill-and there is a reason for that-quality. i have seen both in action, and i bought a colby mill

Ya know what I just don't know. Maybe I am crazy and need to give them a better look. Especially since Lou lives 20 min away from me. The colby mill may be the same price if I can pick it up and save on the shipping.

Rallyracer how long do you run your dog? How often?

Hmm did the pricing and the Colby mill is still $140 more. How can I get the wife to let me spend $575 on a dog treadmill lol.

i picked mine up right from peter, save on the freight shipping.
as far as how long and how often- i looked at it like this-wind sprints
we would do several sessions a day- but short (between 5-10 minutes) we did about 3 hours a day hand walking in good weather, and used the mill more in the inclement times

Lol inclement times where I live is from Nov to April. A couple times a day 5-10 min sounds good.

Ive had 2 grand mills I do not like them I only got them because they guy sold both for 100$. I was given a old colby mill and Loved it it is way more free spinning and the dog has to run it. the grand mills are not very good to train on a young dog. Some dogs will just run it like a pro and some you have to put a mirror in front of them. I would save the 575 and get the colby mill its well worth the price but it is not as wide as the grand mill and your dog may get big.

As far as your wife goes, an inadequately exercised dog can cause waaaaay more than $575 of damage. I know........ :-(

My dog is not really stocky. He is muscular but he is also taller then alot of pits. I don't think he will get very wide. Here are a few pics. Sorry for the junk shot and yes he wears booties to save the hardwood floors.

I like my Grand Carpet Mill well enough, but I've never had another mill to compare it to. The thing about kidney damage is related to running your dog and not letting them empty out, evidently. I always potty my dogs first. The young ones wont hold it if I don't potty them first; they'll just let it go on the mill. So no kidney damage here. LOL

That is what I thought the whole kidney thing was. I may try to stop in and see one of colby's mills in person.
