So I went to go check out the rescue dog saturday morning and I was extremely disappointed... the dog was shy and as the attempted to take him out of the kennel he snapped at the people... then came the point when I introduced him to Blue... they are around the same size but the adoption dog damn near broke down the door trying to run away from Blue... that was the last straw... any way i found a breeder close to me and his blood line is said to contain CAVER, KILLER SID, COLBY, RED DEVIL... can any of you tell me about these dogs heres the post

stay away from backyard breeders advertising on local wesites.

as far as the rescue dog goes- you guys have alot to learn about introducing a new dog

Don't give up on a rescue just because one dog did not meet your expectations. Forget that breeder. He cant even spell the names of the dogs in the pedigree. How can you expect him to produce a quality animal. Just more backyard bred junk.

Usually if a breeder is going to screw up the names so bad he probaly don't really know what he's talking about either.Every BYB has a colby or Gator dog,or I've heard Coby even Gatormouth and any number of spellings of it before.Never heard Carver screwed up before though, the breeder needs Hooked on Phonics.I would stay away.

    LOL....he's hooked on somthing lol....

might be why hes breeding these dogs.....

  8. I agree with Scratchin Dog on this one. Best way to learn is by taking this shy dog and working with him. It will take you time and effort but valuable experience will be your reward. From what I read, the shelter and you did not do things correctly. You NEVER drag a dog out or push them in. You need to let them do it on their own or everything you attempt from the point forward will be met with the same reservation, hesitation by the dog.

Keep the damn dog and work with it. If you cannot undo the mental harm shelter life does to a dog, well, you can take him back. At least that way he/she will have had a bit longer life.:(

I will be the first to agree that i didnt know what the hell i was doing... I thought that being a shelter that asks the potential owner to bring their current dog in would be knowledgable ( cant spell today ) in the situation... it wasnt so much as the shyness as the HA the dog showed...

Do you want a rescue or a reg dog? I know you had said you want the dog to be a playmate for Blue and that rescued you looked at was male. Stay away from another male if you want them to be house dogs together. I would get a young female dog is you want a rescue dog. Go to a private rescue so you know more about the dogs personality. Shelter dogs can have issues that you cannot always see all the time. Nothing against shelter dogs but a private rescue I think can provide a better fit if you already have a dog.

If you want a Reg dog then wait just a bit and maybe someone will know of an up coming litter of some nicely bred dogs. Stay aways from BYB that ad looks ghetto:rolleyes:

I've seen people who didn't know about Carver,Boudreaux or any of the big names in the dog game.If they don't know about the famous people and famous dogs I'd stay away from these people. If all they talk about are color[or color of noses] I'd stay away.If you hear short and stocky or head size mentioned, run as fast as you can away from these people. It costs more to get a good dog from a reliable source, but if you have to live with this dog, feed it and clean up after it for the next 10-13 years,it's better to have one you'll actually like.

I dont know anybody thats breeds game dogs... so waiting for a litter would be a never ending saga... i have considered a female but i would want one from a puppy 4months or younger... The idea of a rescue dog was only made because i saw the one and it looked promising but looks arent everything...

You may not know anybody personally that breeds game dogs but trust me when I say that quite a few folks on here do in fact breed really really high quality dogs. Stick around let ppl get to know you and what your beliefs, moral standards and etc are and what your all about and what you want out of a dog... Most times the ppl here can at least point you in the right direction. Even though dog sales are not to take place ussing this site at least you know where and how to start your search.

Best of luck, and I hope you find what your looking for.

If i were you i would do a lot more research on the breed and find out more about the lines that are out there. And the importance of a well bred bulldog or"pitbull"as most who are not familiar with the breed call them!! Good luck in your search.

As someone who spent ALOT of time with rescue dogs, if one of my fosters EVER snapped at me, it'd be dead, period. Shy is one thing, snapping is another. Rescues and shelters should PURPOSELY be pushing dogs buttons to be sure they have a HIGH tolernace even if they are uncomfortable REGARDLESS of what they've been through ESPECIALLY pit bulls considering the state the breed is in, not coddlin' the crap out of them when it comes to basic day to day handling. Remember, most these dogs are going to PET homes and most PET homes don't have the know how to work with dogs with issues. Gaud.. most of them can't even handle house training. I've handled countless shy dogs and an appropriate response to an uncomfortable situation would be anything from to pissing, rolling on it's back, yelping, shaking, or shutting down in any number of ways, but snapping? Nope. Gaud.... this breed IMO should be more resiliant than that and be able to handle a little bit of stress without falling apart at the seams. I hope the shelter did the right thing and put that dog friggin' down. Gaud.. people talk about culling..... how about culling the ones with weak nerves. No wonder our breed is in the state it is in, when this is what is being offered up to the public to adopt. It REALLY pisses me off. I agree that if you want to go the rescue route, go with a private rescue and REALLY talk to them to hear how they assess dogs temperment.

Dogs in a shelter environment are already very stressed (IMO), add to that the ignorant shelter staff that doesn't know how to handle a dog and meeting another dog and you've got a recipe for disaster. That dog might be a totally different dog in a home environment.

Lots of shelters do not have staff with the knowledge needed to handle this breed.

I hope you don't give up on all rescue dogs because of this one incident-many rescues have foster homes where the dogs can relax and be in a home environment, thus showing their true temperment and or any issues they may have. I agree going with a female is going to be your best bet, but if you are determined to go with a breeder after this, just try to make sure it's a reputable one.

    Good luck!

IMO Stress is the BEST temperment test which is one of the BENEFITS of shelter stress. Considering the vast majority of adopters out there are lacking in handling skills, dogs that are adopted out should be rock solid enough not to need an experienced hand to keep them from nipping at people. IMO a dogs true colors are shown when the pressure is on, NOT when it's in a coddled, comfortable environment. Imagine this dog goes home, is loved all up and seems like a sweetie so they take it to say, a kids baseball game, and the stress of the situation is too much and a kid approaches and gets a good nip in the face and we're all reading it in the headlines the next day dissin' the person for being such a fool for owning a dog with shitty temperment and causing yet more BSL. If less people made less excuses for crap temperment, our breed wouldn't be in the state it's in right now. How about ''Adopt out the best of the best, and cull the rest.'' Exactly what DOESN'T happen which is why I lost respect for rescue on the whole. Our breed is at WAR right now and we need to make sure the soldiers we are sending out on the front lines are the best of the best. The way I look at it, assessing a dog for adoption is alot like game testing. You don't see what a dog is made of when it's winning. You see what it's made of when it's loosing. ;)
