Did any of the dogmen that created the dogs we feed today enter their bulldogs into shows. I guess my question is did they compete in conformation,agility,and/or weight pull events. With the exception of conformation, I don't think that any of the other events were relavent to what they were trying to achieve with our breed. Also did any of these dogmwn work their dogs in hog or boar hunting.

Interesting question but its quite long after 1976 so the breed had to adapt into a show/working dog just like every other working dog. How many rottwielers do you see these days herding. How many border collies do you see herding? How about german shepherds. And I know there are probably dogs of that same breeds listed are probably being used for what they are bred for. But like it or not dog fighting is illegal. Do you want the breed to die out or do you want to turn them into weight pullers?

I don't know when people decided to start having dogs weight pull and even though I've never participated in the event I nice to see the strength that our dogs have (pound for pound). I was just trying to figure out were the events being held pre 1976 and just got popular post 1976.and were these well known dogmen participating in them.I'm not going to answer the last question but I definately don't want to see this breed die out. Hell, even the fools streetfighting these dogs thinking that the fight is supposed to be to the death aren't preserving the breed. If they breed for what they think a match is all there is gonna be is dogs with a hard mouth.ask one of them what a scratch line is and he'll probably show you what his grandmoms cat did to him...thanks for your response...

Are you aware of what events were most popular then, other than the [] of course. I think that conformatiin would have been one of them because we have standards for this breed.

I read that Ch Chinaman was also as conformation champion. I don't know how true it is, but his conformation was champion caliber. I would imagine that the old timers did participate because it would've been a good way to meet other doggers and set up contracts on dogs that were already conditioned and ready to go.

I see lots of Border Collies herding.I have a few myself, and several of my neighbors have them.I've never seen a Rottweiller do anything though.

I do know a lot of border collies that do work still, they are popular like blue/red heelers, Australian cattle dogs. I know GSD do mostly police work these days. As I said the dogs I listed some are still working. But how many border collies do you see competing in flyball, don't they dominate that sport?? Or is it another not sure.

I don't know anything about flyball,I do have working cattle dogs though.I'm sure they're smart enough to train to do about anything.I have a 3/4 border collie 1/4 blue heeler that will go to her chain when I say Chain and go to my front door when I say House. She'll even fall over and play dead if I act like I shoot her and say Bang.I think a dog breed for certain traits have a natural born desire to perform.I've seen hound pups run around sniffing everything before they ever get started hunting. It's bred into them.Same with a good bulldog, they like what they like.:) Regarding the original post,I figure weight pull came after '76,kind of a replacement sport but I'm not 100% sure. There is a weight pull chapter in Gary Hammonds book but I'll have to reread it and see what it says exactly.

My main reason for asking this question is because I haven't heard many stories about dog shows(other than conventions) pre 1976. as far as weight pull goes I haven't heard anything.

I haven't either.Everything I ever heard pre 1976 was about one thing. There wasn't any reason to come up with alternative sports then, they could be a bulldog.

I read in a pit bull oriented magazine one time, I tried to find the article but can't find the mag. Anyway it said weight pulling started out in parking lots before becoming a UKC event. People would bring their dogs out and have clubs and things. And then it became a UKC event. And others took up with it. But the true pulling dogs are the sled dogs. They've been doin that for hundreds of years.

If your talking about Huskies they shouldn't have had a hard time. Every documentary/movie I've seen they were always pulling with a pack of dogs.

Wait, weren't you asking how weight pulling got popular? And how pit bulls got into it? I wasn't saying that sled dog breeds could dominate a bulldog, I was simply adding other breeds that are involved with weight pull.

I was simply trying to add to the conversation with some knowledge I picked up along the way, like everyone else in this world.
