My dog has pretty bad dandruf all over and he has a few really dry spots that have big white flakes and his fur is thinning. When he was about 5 months he had spots of balding and we brought him to the vet where they did a skin scrape and found nothing. Thinking it was demodectic mange they gave him ivromectin and I put nu-stock on him. It made the spots fill in so we stopped the treatment. Now that he is loosing his "winter coat" one of the spots is coming back and now he has one on his tail. I have been doing the nu-stock thing but the skin is still dry and the fur is not coming back. I put the nu-stock on ever other day. Am I supposed to wipe it off before I put new stuff on? I have just been putting it on over the old stuff. He gets Omega 3,6,9 oil every day. Is their something else that is topical I could try, a medicated shampoo to get rid of the dry skin, or maybe use safe guard de-wormer? If all else fails I will go back to the vet.

I would go back to the vet and make sure it's not demodex. If it's not mange then you need to look at other things. It could be an allergy to food or to his environment or just as simple as a stubborn hot spot. If it was my dog I would look at a few things.
    What food are you feeding?
    What supplements are you giving?
How often do you bathe him?
after you tell me that I can give a few suggestions. But I think a repeat visit to the vet might be worth it, OR save money and just treat him for mange and see if that helps. The Nustock helps but I would put him on ivermectine. you can get it at the feed store for cheap. Make sure it's the 1% injectable and just give it orally. If you need a dosage you can look it up on line or if you can't find it pm me and I will look through my dosage book for you.

Do what performanceknls says.....go to a vet to make sure its not mange...get a fecal and blood test done to make sure there are no worms and all is healthy!

I feed prey model raw but he had his first go around with this when he was on kibble so I don't think it is food. As far as supps go he gets omega 3,6,9 oil. I bathe him every 6 weeks or so. What feed store would sell this. I don't have alot of the stores around me that some of you guys have. Also i can see how the ivermectine will help the two spots he has but what about his dander? Thanks alot.

My black dog gets bad dandruff...I spray him with a avon skin so soft (mixed one ounce to a gallon of water) and it helps a lot, keeps him shiny too...it also helps repel fleas.

His Omega 3,6,9 oil is 1200mg and has fish, borage, and flax oil in it. I will start him on an E supp. Funny thing is his coat shines and shines he just has white flakes lol. Damn dog is a pain in my ass lol.

It could be a number of things like diet, allergy's, staf infection or disease. Have your vet check out everything he/she can first. Allegy's can be hard to diagnose, but it can be done with a blood sample. Dry skin and flaking can also come from things like a thyroid problem. Your vet is the best route to follow first. Good luck...

It could also possibly be allergies, if it seems to be seasonal especially more so.

I'd definitely head to the vet just for peace of mind about what it is...

this is no joke and i dont get money from the company...but a buddy of mine had a small puppy which cam from a rather dirty kennel with dandruff all over the puppies ears(and some other cleanliness issues)!

he got it cared of by giving the dog orijen food instead of the barfing the puppy got before.

now im a big fan of barfing if done right, but yeah this really helped this puppy in the beginning to get rid of the dandruff.;)

Lol I used to feed orijen. He still had dandruff. Thank you for the help though.

Heading to the vet tomorrow. Let see what they tell me.

  13. How often are you washing the dog and what are you using for soap when you do?

I forget the brand but it is a dog soap that has oatmeal in it because I read online that it was good for dry skin.

Overwashing is definitely a problem, but I don't think that's the case here. Every 6 weeks isn't that often. Never use a human shampoo for dogs, their ph is completely different than ours. If you are having skin issues, I would recomend an oatmeal and or aloe dog shampoo to help soothe the inflamed skin.
On a side note, China has allergy's and what I thought was a rash from the allergy turned out to be staff infection. It was treated with a round of steriods. So check with your vet to make sure you know what you are dealing with.:)

It is the strangest shit because he isn't red in the areas and he honest to god almost never scratches. He just has a shit load of dander and well his two thinning spots. Hope the vet sorts this out for me.

I had the same exact issue with Otis & Domino after a bout of demodex. It was especially noticeable on Domino - she is black & white, but mostly black. Brushing either of them created a snow storm.

I started adding 1 TBLSP of olive oil as well as 3 gel caps of cold pressed flax seed oil to their diet each day and that helped immensely. They were already getting the fish oil gel caps. Daily brushing with a rubber curry also helped curtail the dandruff.

And my dogs are fed prey model raw as well.

I would def pay a visit back to the vet .. Just to make sure the demodox is gone .. Also If I could recommend a really good shampoo it will really help with the flaking ... It could be allergies that is causing the problem or it could be the cold weather that can cause dry flaky skin. Also what are you feeding besides the Omega supplements? Is he on a flea prevenative?

A really good shampoo that will help with any skin related issue.. I have used this before and it's excellent!
