Double Collaring?

How many of you guys use double collaring as part of keeping your dogs on a chain set-up?

I just started doing it about two weeks ago and I must say I'm pleased with it. I had my dog who is not an APBT, but still an escape artist none the less figure out how to un-hook his single collar, tried a harness. Nope he learned how to get out of that. So I said to hell with it and tried double collaring. It works! He can't for the life of him figure out why the collars won't come off. So I like the idea of double collaring. Of course my mother looks at me like I'm crazy because I have to keep a beagle on two collars, but I rather be safe then sorry.

Here's a few pics of how I set that one up and why he can't escape it.

I've used double collars a few times and it works good.I've never had any luck with the cable tie outs though.I have a little half Feist mutt that will chew through a cable tie out or twist them until they break and he's only 15 pounds, the cables are pretty weak.I'd put him on a small chain,I've never had luck with the cables.

Oh forgot about that cable, never really had a problem with him on cables. But I am looking for a good chain currently, I didn't like the ones I saw at Petsmart, Target, and Wal-Mart....soooo off to Tractor supply next paycheck for a good chain ;)

thats ridiculous no dog needs 2 collars unless you use junk

it'll keep a dog from backing out of a chain spot when you have two collars on.;)

I would try tightening the collar.

Funny thing about that Judge....the stuff I use isn't junk. It's top of the line stuff. Not bought at a pet store, but hard-ware stores, tested and everything. I can't help the fact that he chooses to UN-HOOK his collars! NOT slide out of them UN-HOOK! I have the collars as tight as they'll go with cutting into his skin. Now that he has TWO collars on, he is beside himself. He was on a buckle collar, that was my fault. But with the these two collars....I doubt he can un-hook them nor will be able to slide out of them. So see there is always a reason behind two collars. I'd rather have my dog be safe and give myself peace of mind, then have him un-hook another collar and get loose and get hit by a car.

I've had to use a two collar setup before.Intertel was right in that it helps prevent a dog from backing out.Usually the first time it happens its by accident. But from then on the dog quickly learns how to do this and will do it at will.I have a bitch that did it a couple times, not very often, so I just tightened up her collar a little. My wife was getting kids loaded into her car in the morning for school and an old neighbours dog came into my yard my bitch backed out of the collar with no effort at all and hit that dog. If you need to double collar a dog then do it, it can't hurt anything. It may look funny to some yeah, but who cares.

it is funny looking but does make sense...good luck with it. My buddy has a dog (JRT) that is neck is bigger than its head so no matter how tight you make the collar it slides right over...he is a inside dog so not much of a big deal...

a two collar setup is a much safer setup... you dont have to ever worry about them backing out of them...one 1.5-2.5 inch collar with a 1 inch above is what is recomended for a bulldog...id keep a beagle on two one inch like muttkip has...

you should maybe listen instead of running your mouth if you dont know about something

What's ridiculous is people like you even own these dogs!!! You can't be too safe when it comes to bulldogs. I highly recommend two collars, and so will any real dogman. Chances of them breaking or slipping two collars is nearly impossible. If one fails it is a very good idea to have a backup just in case.

You'd be surprised how sneaky beagles are. They are crafty little buggers and I'd have no problem believing they'd find their way out of a collar, i'm more surprised that he hasn't chewed through that cable tie out myself.

You can only trust hardware so much...Whats wrong with being proactive..

This is true, you should replace that cable with a good chain. You'd be surprise how quickly a determined dog can chew threw that. Not just a bulldog, any dog, beagle included.

Like I said....next pay check off to Tractor Supply I go to get him a better chain :)

And those double collars are holding up VERY well.

    @ Mike
Yes I need two collars for my beagle, have an issue with me trying to follow my county's leash law as well as look out for my dog's safety? He's a VERY smart dog, and so far this is the only thing that has stopped him from escaping his chain set-up. He knows how to get out of harness, un-buckle buckle collars, slide out of collars. And so far this is what is working. So in a sense yes I do need two collars for a beagle. Just because he's not a bulldog, does not mean that he's not capable of escaping.

i always use two collars but one is a fur saver. ive even had dogs undo the turnbuckles you are using. they put it in their mouth and rolled it. So paddolocks and heavy swivels only for my yard.
