Its seems people prefer chain set-up versus a kennel, why?

Is it just because of the cost or is there another reason? My brother had a dog rip his kennel open and cut his mouth wide open. He had over 50 stitches. Im just curious bc i was thinking the if they had a top and the dogs didnt attempt to go through the fench that that would be less ahzardous. Prob cost more though. Just wondering and wanting different opinions

They are cheaper but i doubt thats the reason most prefer them.
Chains offer more room. They are more reliable as far as keeping the dog where you put it(dogs cant dig, climb over, chew through). Dogs seem to do better on them mentally.
A 10' chain offers offers 314 sq foot living space where a 10' by 10' kennel offers 100sq ft space.
I am sure there are more reasons but thats what i can think of right now

a good chain setup will cost you under $50 per dog

a good kennel setup will cost you over $600 per dog

i have over $5000 into my kennels...and about $25 im my chainspot

It is the cheapest, safest, and most reliable way to contain a bulldog. It is a win win situation.

I think the main reason is leg room for the dog, then cost.

thanks. i was just wondering if maybe a kennel would look more legit then having a yard full of bulldog on chains. Just lookin for alternatives. Thanks everyone

A 10' x 10' kennel offers a dog 100 sq. feet of living space where as a 10' chain set up offers 314 sq. feet of living space, which one would you want to live your life on?;)

While I really don't have too much of a problem with a good chain set-up (running cables are better I think), I think there is more to it than this "living space" thing I see a lot of for justifying that chains are "better" than a kennel.

It's the constant big wide collar that a dog has to live in. It's the constant weight around it's neck that a dog lives with. It's the constantly being attached to something and having to constantly step (and trip) over it.

And yes, chain spots are "cheap", so I think sometimes it enables some to keep more dogs than they probably should...these are just some of the disadvantages I see. I don't see chains as the perfect set-up they are made out to be.

Also, kennels might work better for many if they didn't buy that cheap chain-link stuff at Wal-Mart or the home improvement stores. Might as well have the dogs behind chicken wire!

my dogs perfer goin in the kennel over being chained up. that may have to do with what dreamer touched on. but the main concern is saftey so im gonna do more research but this definately helped me. Im jus not the type of person who does something bc i saw someone else do it aka "because chains are the way its done ". i take experienced peoples advice to heart tho. this has been very helpful, i just like to know why and think for myself, so i ask questions;)

well they go into the kennel without a thought EVERYTIME. They dont like comin to their dog houses when im standing by them and call them bc they know they are gettin chained up, so... i guess they kinda did tell me that:D

all of my outside dogs would rather be on a chain, and the way i know this is because when i moved into this house there were already 8 12 x 10 dog kennels set up the guy that lived here before me raised and bred beagels so when i moved in before i got the chains set up i had them in the kennels and two of my males would sit next to the door of the gate and shake they were so scared to be in a cage and the other ones just barked and whined the whole time but after i got the axles in the ground i came around the edge of the house pulling chains behind me and they all just went bat shit crazy trying to get out to where i was with the chains and ever since ive had them back on chains they have been nothing but happy and content

I like chain spots and when done properly they are very dependable. But for me, I prefer raised pens for the dogs because of overall health. Chains get very dirty and puts dogs at a high risk of parasite and bacteria build up because of constant chain dragging everything in the space around in circles. The amount of filth that lives on a 1 year old chain in insane. For me, the pens keep the dog dry at all times, eliminates them from walking in poop. It's great when you have a dog in a keep or a bitch in heat, and a kennel accident is virtually impossible with the setup that I have. The pens run me $250 each, for 5 dogs, so it's not as cheap as a chain setup, but I do feel that there are more benefits from raised pens then chain setups. Not to mention, pens are not frowned upon as much as chain spots by hsus. It easier to clean and disinfect as well, jmo.

Proper chain set up offer many more pros than do kennels for this particular breed, for one, the dog doesn't feel confined becuase it really isn't in a fenced area or a cage like atmosphere so you won't get a dog with a pacing disorder. With a chain spot, when it exits it's house, it's in the open with no enclosure so to them their not confined per say. Kennels, depending on the quality you get, can be climbed (if no roof, an added exspense by the way) or dug under (unless you concrete the floor (in which now your dog spends the majority of it's time on a hard surface which creates it's own set of problems and is an additional exspense as well) also some dogs will even eventually chew through them if they are not of the utmost best quality They have more than double the leg room to run than a kennel offers as well as the well know fact that kennels, especially good ones, are not cheap or even reasonable they (when done right) are down right expensive. If you have the kind of money it takes to build very elaborate kennels then more power to you but it will never offer the room a chain spot does no matter how big you build it compared to a chain of the same lenght as your kennel wall. it's like the difference between Jail and being out on the yard.

Thank you for this. If you dont mind me asking what kind of pens do you use and where do you get them from? I def agree w your hsus comment

i respect your opinion more than most people on this thread and you make soem great points earlier. but right here its sounds like you are comparing a good chain set-up to a poorly kennel set-up. Of course if you dont have a quality kennel set-up the dogs are gonna get out. Thats the same case if you dont have aquality set-up.

Also do you think your dogs just werent used to kennels? just a question. I think my dogs jus tike the fact that they dont have a restraint around their neck pulling them back... and no they didnt tell me that lol
