Its seems people prefer chain set-up versus a kennel, why?

Discussion in 'Products & Equipment' started by Dream Pits, Oct 27, 2009.

  1. It depends on your location/situation. If you live in the country, a chain set up is great. If you live in the city where people can see into your yard, or other dogs come into your yard, you need a kennel. The public will never get over "their" idea of chaining.
I like a good chain set up, with axle in the ground, swivels on both ends and a good "sporting" collar, on securely. I like a kennel with a top and bottom on it, and prefer the Magnum kennel, or the one sold at menards that is similar to the Magnum.
If you want to be more secure, you also need a privacy fence around the whole yard.

the pics show all i need to see- if its under 100sq.ft. its too small, not much that can be argued there. dogs need room, even if they are out and excercised daily. what you have there is essentially a large crate.
i dont know when i will be headed up north again, but i appreciate the offer

Well we all have our likes and dislikes. But i still prefer a kennel over a chain setup, my personal preference. I firmly believe that dogs that live in these types of pens are cleaner and healthier than your average dog on a chain spot, simply because they more sheltered from the natures elements. No wlaking in mud, no walking or dragging around poop. Its just more professional looking to humaniacs and nosey neighbors. I just remebered, we have a 3 hour tethering law in my town, chained for over 3 hours is illegal.

I'm not so sure what this had to do why my post. I did not in any way state or imply that my dogs are ever left ALONE in my house. We crate and rotate but we also use the kennel and chain to give the dogs some time outside.

Our dogs don't all get along. Some will kill each other if they ever got the chance. Crate and rotate is the only responsible way to keep multiple APBTs in a house.

one of the problems here is that dogs run loose alot. yesterday a little terrier mutt about 5 lbs got in the back yard when i had let abbey out. she is in heat so luckily he couldnt get up there or me and the owner would have some serious issues. i tried to catch him to take him home but he ran off down the street. i was gonna go tell the owner but i let my otehr dog out before i left. i got to put on my shoes and i heard a sound in the back yard that every bully breed owner fears. so i run back there and that little bastard was under my porch screaming. she could reach him but she was trying to get after him. I puther up and still couldnt catch the little dog btu i got his owner. That right there, made me lean towards kennels a little bit. I still am not sure if they have enough benefits to pay that much more money for. But that was a good example. i dont know what crack he fit thru to get in the back yard

No offense but I don't see how that's more professional looking than a proper chain setup. It actually looks like a brooding/puppy pen from where I'm standing and much to small for a full grown animal.

Then again, I'm not there and it is your yard so whatever keeps your dogs safe. I'm in CT so maybe I'll take you up on that offer.

Personally, I think its a good idea to have both. A decent sized kennel for temporary housing, pups, etc... And a well kept chain spot(s) with a proper house.

    Howard:
What do you think about keeping th APBT outdoors, in our COLD winters? I've had 1 outside, in a kennel setup/good house too, and I did not like my dog, outside in these Michigan winters.

Can the APBT handle negative wind chills?

I keep my 3 dogs indoors. 2 in crates while I am gone, w/ 2 doors closed off. The other (old) one runs the rest of the house.

    Any opinions on the cold?

  9. Hi Moot,
I think they(APBTS) can be kept outside in the cold with precautions. I have insulated dog houses, not igloos or barrells. Those are fine for mild climates but don't work in Mi. I put tons of straw in the dog houses, so they can burrow in. The dogs have to be kept fat, not pit weight, or they will not make it. They need to be fed and watered at the same time(mixxed together), twice a day if possible. Extra fat is also necessary, either a high fat food, or a regular one, with fat added. I actually add deep fryer fat to a good quality food, for extra calories. Keeping them hydrated by mixxing the food and water is a necessity. For my older dogs, or maybe I am just getting "softer", I have heated dog houses with K9Condo doors. I have never lost a dog to cold weather in 25 years, so this works for me.

The only problem I have, is in the spring time, my dogs are morbidly obese because of the hard winters.

The main reason most people use chain set ups is because its the most SECURE way to keep a bulldog from getting loose if done correctly. The rest of the other reasons is just psychological from societys points of view.

Moot, Howard is right on the money. All my dogs stay outside for the winter, the only thing he missed is that, it is much easier on the dog if he starts outside in the spring time. Meaning it's easier if they live go threw all four seasons, starting with spring and ending in winter. The dog houses I use are pictured in the winter dog house thread.

Naustrom, your certainly welcome to visit my yard. The pens would be to small for a 50 +lb. Dog. But as I stated my dogs are small, 30-38lbs. If animal control came to my house and I had 5 chain spots, I'd get hassled for forever. The kennel inspector said that my setup is one of the cleanest and securest in the area. So to each there own, whatever makes you and the dogs comfortable.

I have magnum kennels with wooden rooves, cement floors. I have some chain set ups but I like em both. Havent had a yard accident since I mainly use the kennels.
