"Whats everyones thoughts on that?" AGK BB would say ask someone who had a winning record. bob was like 0/4 as a competitor probably not the best philosophy as to what works & what don't.

i dont buy what bob stevens is saying... i interpreted it as hard mouthed dogs may not get to show their gameness as they tend to finish before that comes into play. but this is definitely not true as many dogs with mouth have had to show their gameness when they meet a hog of equal or higher caliber. Just me trying to make sense out of nonsense i guess.

  6. if hes a real game dog he's game for life lol let him get bet hell show u lol..

Any man's will can be broken and so can the game of any dog. A diseased or poorly conditioned dog is going to have less game than it would if it was healthy and in peak shape. Starve a dog before a fight to get it to weight, over-train it, fight it too many times without letting it recover and heal... there a number of ways poor ownership can destroy the game of a dog's spirit.

Dogs have a finite number of good, go-the-distance fights in them. Why do you think there are no more 7x or 8x dogs? People learn that most dogs won't have more than two or three great outings -- 1 per every 100,000 tested dogs, maybe -- so if their dog wins 2 or 3 good matches, they say, "my dog is a champion," and retire it.

That's a paraphrased portion of a book I read recently written by an old time dog fighter. It makes sense to me, but I have no damned idea. I don't fight my dogs.

A good dogs will can be broken but if he is a true gamedog he will continue to scratch. I do think age will curve agression though, but not game. We had a dog that was 7 years old and he was extremely agressive towards cats/dogs, just about anything moving including bikes. By the time he was 10 before he died he was chilling on the porch with cats watching cars ride by. the aggression was gone. But i feel that the gameness was still there, i can't imagine he lost what was in him, if he had to go to work one more time i'm sure he'd go out that way. just my opinion.

you need a better definition of game. You use the word in the same light as having "a game". That is not what it is all about. 'Game' is a rare quality of a dog and it can't be affected by poor conditioning or diseased. If those scenarios are present it may lose, but it would lose game or die trying. Those scenarios will most likely lead to that's dog early demise. But those factors will not change whether he was/is a game dog. It can very well be the difference between winning and losing or success and failure.
I too believe in that proverbial gas tank as well. I believe they all have a tank of gas and some get really good gas mileage and go far on the only tank they have. Others open the four barrels, tear off down the road and never get too far. Most are some where in between. But if one were to keep driving his dog eventually he will run out of gas. The kicker is a fine line when that happens. With no gas did he get stopped or did he hang it up? S

have to agree with slim here environmental factors may affect winning or losing but gameness is an intrinsic quality that i believe cannot be affected by poor keep and feeding. all this would do is make the dog go down faster and i believe gameness can be shown in a short amount of time when a dog is down and basically out but will not stop. in other words conditioning and feeding may only affect the time a dog has before he shows gameness, and not affect the amount of gameness the dog has

    As having "a game?" What?

Game is will, determination... how far a dog can be pushed before it quits. The definition isn't up for debate. It's real simple. The question is whether a dog can lose its will to fight on.

I believe it can and I believe how you condition a dog can determine the psychological factors that lead to quitting or carrying on.

i believe all conditioning does is extend the period of time before gamesness comes into play and has to be shown.....

So game has nothing to do with aggression? As long as a dog scratches, doesn't turn and goes for a hold, it's game? That means a dog that scratches, gets rolled, takes bottom and just holds on benignly is game.

I think the spirit of the definition of "game" also infers something about how aggressively a dog fights, not just whether or not it's willing to fight.

Being game and being aggressive are 2 different subjects. One has nothing to do with the other.

I disagree. What if you were watching a couple of dogs and someone said, "that dog has some heart, but no fire, just isn't as game as I wish he was," you'd know what he meant.

There has to be a killer instinct for a dog to truly be game. Going out and taking a whipping -- even if the dog scratches, doesn't turn and always takes a hold -- just isn't game.
