MIDVILLE, Ga. -- For many dogs, Chuck Simmons is nothing short of a hero.

“I do it because I love animals,” he says. “I love dogs.”
He is the lead investigator with Norred and Associates -- a private group that works to shut down dog fighting rings. The latest bust came Friday morning in Emanuel County.

“They didn't have water, a lot of them didn’t have food,” Simmons says, describing the dogs. “They were chained with logging chains.”
Fourteen dogs were taken from a home on Brown Hall Road in Midville. GBI agents and Emanuel county sheriff's investigators led the arrest, along with members of the drug task force.

Thirty-five year-old Derek Jukes was arrested and charged with fourteen counts of cruelty to animals, one count of dog fighting and a felony charge of aggravated animal cruelty.

“It was 23 or 24 degrees when we got there,” Simmons says. “The dogs were very cold.”

And in recent months, there have been more busts. This makes the second one for Emanuel County. There have been two in Wilkinson County and one in Laurens County, where investigators seized ninety-seven dogs from a single property. Simmons played a role in all of them.
“Dog fighting is an ongoing criminal enterprise,” he says. “We always find evidence linking them together.”

Digging into crime comes naturally to Simmons -- he spent many years as a police investigator.

“The difference is it's not drugs, or money,” he says. “It's live evidence, it's dogs.”

And now he's putting his years of expertise to use protecting man's best friend.

The group was started by Greg Norred in 2008, after the Michael Vick trial. Since then, they've rescued more than four hundred dogs. They receive most of their tips from an anonymous tip line and give a five thousand dollar reward for each tip that leads to an arrest. That number is 1-877-215-2250.

And as for Jukes' fourteen dogs, they're being treated by the Atlanta Humane Society.

The dogs were cold we all are cold downsouth this month. What did this cat do wrong? No food( how many of us always have food under our nose 24/7?). Special interest groups have run amok. Everyone from ar orgs to the society of the to rich to mind my own affairs are running our lives.! How long before they move from saying what we can do in our backyard to telling us what to do in the bedroom. Home of the free?

So what they are basically saying is that we should all free feed and have heating units in the dog houses or we are being cruel to them??? do these people own dogs themselves??? if they did then they would know that dogs need to be fed on a schedule.. stupid mothafuckas.

Please excuse me for asking this but if he's not law enforcement what law gives a private citizen the right to come on your property and take your property? I believe this is called theft and trespassing? I know I've asked some dumb questions on here before but what happens when someone defends their property from someone stealing it?

The problem is they have an organization to back up this bs. The bulldog community needs to have something in place to fight this. It's ridiculous....:(
