Any ideas on crosses they may work in big game hunting?

Discussion in 'Dog Discussion' started by bryant'smissy, Jan 14, 2010.

  1. Im looking to develope my own personal line of catch dogs. I want to know of any crosses that you have seen work or think in theory may work. I love my APBT's. But in a hunt they lack a few things. I wish to create a dog that can track, run down and finish the job/ keep'em down till I get there depending on game. So please give me some ideas. Here's what I've been thinking of(all dogs from working lines):

    (hard mouth)APBT x coonhound/ (deep game)APBT x greyhound
    1/2APBTx1/4CHx1/4GH (x) 3/4(hard mout)APBTx1/4kerryblueterrier(some linesgreat destroyers of game)

then do a few multi-generational crosses of these dogs. And backcrosses to get any lost traits. I think it may work.

Many lines of Dogos do the job you are looking to create. A mixed pack of 2 curs and a Dogo or two is all that is needed most of the time.

  3. I want my own Private stock. I hate having to pay for something I can make myself. Something me, my family and friends can use and passs down to our kids. I wish more people would do so. There would be a lot less genetically flawed dogs out there. Any Ideas?

BMC X Pit --However I dont try to re-invent the wheel. There are plenty of hunters using dogs for all type of jobs. It takes years and hard culling to create something that already exists.....
in my humble opinion of course

I currently own bandogs so i could be biased lol, but on a serious note, if you need a dog that will stop big game, i dont think many apbt x greyhound can take up the task, as most greyhounds are not that big, if you want to bred a game bred pitbull to anything i would choose a good mastiff, my choice is the neoapolitan mastiff. Good luck.

  7. that is why i want to use it early in the program. to increase speed. I want an all aroung hunter mastiff would slow the dogs down mentally and physically. I want a dog that has a go get it attitude. I want the dogs to range from 65-85lbs. Any ideas of a big hunter known to have huge teeth?

The thread on the dog with big teeth is called "You thought your dog had MOUTH" its posted in the Chit Chat section by me. The dogs in question are Serbian Defense Dogs (full name posted in that thread).

It is ILLEGAL to buy one of these outside of Serbia, the closest thing you can get are Sylvan Mastiffs.

^^^ Thats what I'd take big game hunting... they are NOT Neopolitan Mastiffs. If you don't know what they are, or where they exist and you can still get them. You don't need to know - simple as that ;)

There are people trying to recreate the Alaunt and having good success as a big game hunting dog like bear and boar but still agile enough to rundown fox.

    Bull Lurcher(BullxGreyhound) x Bullmastiff

Its a Central/Southern Italian Mastini, and by todays standards of Neapolitan Mastiff, thats not perfect - although I understand PERFECTLY what you mean by that statement.

They aren't sold or advertised, or known as Neapolitan Mastiffs locally, or by anyone who knows where to still get them like that.

I'm Sicilian, I've been lucky enough to see dogs like that within the past 2 years, that still exist with my own eyes. Most Neapolitan Mastiff owners, will never lay eyes on a dog, HALF of what these things are.

There are only 3 places in Italy they still exist, Puglia, Naples and a few remote Southern locations spanning a triangle between Messina, Taormina (my hometown) and Calabria.

Good luck to anyone that isn't local EVER buying one, and no... I wont tell you what they are called :)

The current Neapolitan Mastiffs, are bred from similar (not identical) bloodlines to these dogs. While the Neo fags, decided to show ring their dogs and destroy everything they should be by breeding for conformation, type (read: wrinkles) etc, there are a handful of people that are trying to save whats left of true Roman Molossers and doing a damn good job, as far as I know, there are only 5 - 6 actual legit bloodlines, and they all work cohesively to achieve stability and diversity.

You will also find, 9 out of 10 Neo breeders, do not have pure lines, despite what they tell you ;) EM, BM, DDB - shitloads of stuff sullying their lines up if you do your homework.

PM me if you know a thing or two about Neo's and want some more info, I'm not gonna give much away, but I can fill you in on the differences and give you another 2 examples of breeds which have been destroyed by show ring and conformation that are still being kept alive by purists back home - you just have to be local, know people and be there in person, to ever have heard or known about it

ok ok so its not a disagreement :) I know the breed has been ruined by show ppl and was about to go extinct, I think M Guaglione tried to keep the mastino true to its original form, but I'm no expert, just a few things i've read here and there.
    thx for little information BTW
    cheers

Full hound breeds work best for me and pure bred pitbulls for the catch

Start your own canine eugenics experiment...sounds good yet time consuming. The APBT was the ultimate result of eugenics, same as with any other pure bred dog. They're all mixes somewhere down the line...So cull hard my friend.
