That is why learning is a life long experience.

What should I have known? None of my past dogs have ever displayed this behavior. I am always willing to learn. Please enlighten me.

  2. I've had the same thing happen with some guy while walking my dog downtown. He started off by teasing raider (lunging at him) and then kept trying to pet him. Slurring and sayin "oh its fine I have a pitbull too" my dog kept snapping at him and I could barely kept him back. My dog has never done this before it was just the situation. the last thing I'd ever want is for him to bite someone, for the persons sake and I'd die if my dog got put down. the guy seemed to finally get the point after threating to punch him the face. I don't like violence but I'm not losing my dog (who's like a family member. My dog is spoiled and well socialized I think he was just trying to protect me.

IMO you should have taken the dog away from the situation...
you saw it coming but decided to ignore it because it was a close friend or something...

but I really wouldn't call that agressive neither...
the dog was pestered and you didn't step up for the dog so he finally growled/snapped at the guy to tell him to back off IMO, nothing more...

keep on socializing, and please, next time something like this happens, remove your dog from the situation and I'm sure you're dog will turn out just fine ;)

you should have praised him for it! jokes., i would bite the dude myself if he harrassed me like that.
i think its probly all good. probly one of them scetchy uncles.
like wardog said , i think you can trust a good dogs instincts, when it comes to people. my dog hates one person badly and i dont like the look of this fella either. infact it was my dog that pointed it out to me, just doesnt feel right.

if hes been a good dog he will probly still be a good dog.
and they are not pussys, id hardly think a a one time things gonna change him for life.
    unless hes a pup.

The Drunkard was nowhere in sight when i was greeted by my friend at the gate as I walked by his house. I was only talking to my friend. After only 1 minute of conversation...his uncle comes out the front door. I said Hi to his uncle then told my friend I should be heading off as I had to leave anyway.
The whole ordeal with the drunk trying to pet Stewy lasted about 30 seconds... as soon as Stewy avoided him...I left and I continued on my walk.

My only reason for stopping by was because I was greeted... I had no idea a drunk would walk out that front door.

Also as i mentioned in the original post...I did strike at the man with a stiff arm on his second pet attempt which stopped him.

I totally agree that a dog should not be put in stressful situation purposly or knowingly. But everything caught us on surprise. I even didnt expect to see my friend at the gate when i walked by.

What should have i done differently? Should I have just ran when his uncle walked out the door?

in 12 years with dogs and you ask this, hmm..
    ill ask this....
you stated you, yourself struck out at the man because of his drunkenness, does this mean you are now going to go around hitting people for now on?

if your dog sences "your" un easyness around someone it will usually have a similar affect on your dog.
best advise is to alway's avoid situations like this, put the dog away and never let idiots f**k with your dogs.

I apologize if my post offended you...
I didn't want to come of rude or anything
don't run away, but next time, just say politely goodbye to your friend and tell him you'll come by later or something like that and remove the dog from the situation as soon as he puts his eyes on him :)

Re: Do I have a potentential man biter.....

As soon as your dog started displaying the avoidance behaviour that you yourself noted you observed in the dog, you should have said your good-byes, turned on your heel, re-focused your dog's attention to you with a heel command or "let's go" command & walked (not run) off.

Just for future reference, drunks are not good company for man or beast.

Hope this gives you some insight & I hope Stewie is well.

Thanks ABK and Ganja for the advice. I did leave as soon as Stewy was in avoidance. The stiff arm to his chest was to stop him from attempting the second pet and following.

ABK, I been reading up on the "stress tolerance" u mentioned in your earlier posts. And It seems stewy might have a low stress tolerance for a Rowdy people.

I recall once when a group of young people were walking by my house with loud music and were being rowdy. Stewy was in the backyard, but he was the only of dogs who barked when the group of people passed by.

What do u make of this? Could he just have a low threshold for rowdiness?

I guess a dog bite is equal to a human punch, no honestly how many people i hear would have thought about layin this mofo out if he did that to them? lol

It doesn't mean you have a man-biter, or that he will no longer trust people. As others have mentioned, people that behave strangely, whether they are drunk or handicapped or whatever, can make the dog uneasy. Unless maybe they never get out at all and are totally unsocialized, they aren't going to to judge everyone based on that one weirdo - they are going to evaluate each person individually.

Twisted: If you want to find out Stewie's stress tolerance two places to start would be a CGC test or better yet a ATTS test. Both include things like unknown people walking by with unfamiliar things (i.e. an elderly man walks by using a cane) or unknown people walk by stimulating the dog unexpectedly (i.e. a man walks by & drops a metal object near the dog that makes a loud sound). There are experienced evaluators there who will observe & evaluate your dog during the test & they can tell you more about your dog.

    Good luck! :)

While I do not like dogs that display this on their own, With this case you have the dog acting what I would consider normal. The dog tried to let the drunk know that he didn't want to be petted or touched and he didn't heed the warning so the dog went to the next step to get him to back off.

I highly doubt the dog will be aggressive with people, Anything and anyone if pushed hard enough in a situation they do not like will first try and send out signals that they are uncomfortable and then if they are not paid attention to you will lash out.

I do believe that the dog shouldn't have been allowed to be in that situation in the first place but none the less it happened and I hope you learn from this. Had he made contact and broke the skin you could be in for a long, Hard and expensive legal fight.
