Can a premium puppy food be to rich

Discussion in 'Dog Discussion' started by Ghetto Dawg, Apr 18, 2010.

  1. I need some help, I feed my puppies Black Gold Ultimate Puppy 32/21 and their stool is mushy and the clean up is almost a full time job. I love the weight that it puts on the pups and their coat appearance. Is there any other feed that I can try with those same benefits and have a dryer stool that's easy to clean up?

A food can be too rich for a puppy. Puppies have high nutritional needs but it needs to be moderated. You want them to grow at a steady rate and not too fast or they can wind up with skeletal problems. IMO, that is a bit high in protein for a puppy, depending on its age. How old is your puppy?

  3. They are almost four months old

  4. Should I switch to the adult formula which is lower in protein?

I personally like chicken soup for the puppy lovers soul.

Orijen has worked very well for me.
my pup has a beautiful shiny coat with it :)

although I like to keep a bit more weight on my pups that what he currently is at, and increasing his food doesn't work (probably just the way he is) I have absolutely nothing bad to say about orijen puppy food (I take the regular, most take the "large breed puppy" but IMO apbt's aren't large dogs)

I think that yes that is too much for an average growing puppy. I would switch to something like a high protein adult formula that's around 24-28% protein and 18-20% fat. My adults and pups alike do really well on that. I was feeding 26/18 but I switched to 24/20 and they seem to be doing just as good if not better. Good luck..Keep us posted on what you do and how it works.
