So I got a Dogo Argentino...

Discussion in 'Dog Discussion' started by apollo78412, Aug 5, 2010.

  1. She's really a beauty! Ever since we got rid of our pits a while back, I've been reluctant to ever get a dog again. Raising game dogs really puts you in a different mind set and no dog breed since then has ever been really acceptable to me.

Until I found and learned about Dogos. I love their "gameness" towards hogs! haha. I'll find out what she can do when she is older in the hunt!

I also named her "Alegre", which pays homage to Gr Ch Ojo Azul's sister who was stolen before her first show and most likely would've been another Gr Ch!

I had one in 1993, born here off two argentinian imports.

AWESOME dog, but the HARDEST to train dog I've ever owned!! Never and I mean NEVER was able to keep her from eating EVERYTHING she wanted to eat, inclusing but not limited to a whole tupperwear full of cookies (including the whole tupperwear), the whole book steeven kings the stand (and I don't mean chewed it up I mean ATE it!) A whole couch cushion cuz someone didn't clean up a chocolate milk spill good enuff!

Smartest damn dog though! Did deal with some dominance issues but nothing TOO rediculous. Had her 11 years.

Ha, she's a cutie. Good luck.

  17. Actually got her from a breeder near San Antonio. I've read everywhere that you should get one straight from Argentina, but after looking into the breeder and seeing how well their dogs hunted, I didn't see the reason in having to import one.

The breeder and I got into a long discussion though about Dogos, and she explained to me that too many breeders in the US focus too much on the show aspect of the dog (bigs heads, broad shoulders, etc), and it weakens the hunting aspect of it. She had a few dogs that she showed me that were huge, but were poor hunters.

This pups father was actually the focus on a National Geo special thats all over youtube if you search for Dogos.

  18. haha, whats funny is that I grew up on Bolio/Red Baby dogs, which have always been known to be submissive towards people and the best damn pets I've ever had.

So, as you imagine, this Dogo has been a little bit of work. Just always gotta be on her ass! But just a lovable as Red Baby ROM herself!

well actually, im argentinian, and belive it or not the dogos in argentina are larger than the ones you see here. Here they are more bred for show and tend to be smaller and more skinny. In argentina they are bigger all around dogs, bigger heads, shoulders, more muscle tone. Theyre GREAT animals, i fell in love when i got to be around them over there.

  20. hmmm, maybe I should find a stud in Argentina to breed her to when the time is right!

one thing I dont understand is how breeders are so strict on what the dogo looks like. if i were a Dogo breeder, Id say "f that!" and just stick to the Dogos that hunted the best. I bet Dogo breeders lost a lot of very game hunting dogs just b/c it had a black spot somewhere on the body!
