Is a bulldog to put it on.

Alright so I wanted comments on the set up I put together. Bought everything from Stillwater except for the chain which I got at work.
The axle end is a 3/8" swivel and the collar end is 5/16". All the lap links are 3/8". The chain is 16' of 3/16". The collar is a 2" 4 ply seatbelt collar.

maybe a bit overkill for old yeller there, huh
for real though, a good setup like that is the best insurance for keeping all your dogs safe (and the neighbors dogs too) :)

What grade is that chain, please?

Mike, yeah I didn't realize it would be so big. I might switch it out for two smaller ones when the time comes.

Thanks Boogie.

Noble, no kidding lol. She was pathetic wearing that.

Fblb, uh, good question. I can't even remember anymore, seeing as I bought it about 8 months ago. I do remember the WLL is 850lbs though, so I'm assuming its a low grade. I will get a higher grade if need be. Do you think I would need to? I know I would if I got a real active dog that constantly hit the end of the chain.

How often is it that the chain actually breaks rather than the hardware? And what effect does the length of it have on it breaking? I would think the longer it is the more the pressure would distribute, leaving it less likely to break than at a shorter length but I have no idea honestly.

The collar ring is big. Everything else looks great. It all depends on what dog you trying to put on it. You might check out those heavy duty rings from O'Briens. The rest of it looks good.

well if your starting out with a pup then its a good chain,i start mine small and increase in time.just watch for links in the chain wearing thin some dogs wear them faster, always check chain, links, rings, collar on a reg basis.i keep mine at 12 feet.

YOUR RIGHT !! I HAD MANY DOGS GET THEIR LEG STUCK IN A O-RING THAT BIG !! , also its best to use 2 o-rings through the axle . myself i like a little heavier chain than that . DAMN GET A SMALLER O-RING !!!

I can't tell from a picture, but it looks like regular old proof coil chain to me. I would switch it out for some grade 70. Also would go ahead and get a smaller ring, but all in all not bad. A chain is only as strong as it's weakest link. :)

loose the lap links. use a connector that tightens up where it closes and use some loc-tite on it, it will never come undone unless you pry it.

you will lose the battle of wear and tear with lap links.

other than that, lose the swivel on the end and use the same kind of connector for your o-ring and chain then bury the axle. use a post-hole digger and then pound it into the ground about a foot with a maul or something. i've yet to see an above-ground axle the doesn't eventually get caught up and tangle from the debris your dog will drag around. at least if it's buried there's nothing to lock it up from moving freely.

good luck!

with the axle i use some concrete , and i bury the top about 8 inches under the dirt , since i tryed that i had no hang ups , i havn't got all mine done like that yet , but i will soon , use these cold shuts instead of the lap links

Good info. Thanks guys.
I realize there are lots of threads on this subject but they still leave some aspects in question for me. Keep it coming.

Chef, I had actually planned on buying an 8 ft galvanized fence post, leaving 4 ft above ground and 4 below. However, I don't hear of anyone using this much so I wonder if its a tried and failed set up?
With the chain being so long I figured it would be better to have a swivel at both ends. Am I wrong in thinking that?
Also, I'm not concerned with the lap links. A lot of people here have used them without problems. I will be cautious of wearing though.

By the way, the chain is only going to be for when I'm not home so it probably wont see as much action as a lot of setups here lol. Maybe 9 hours a day? The rest of the time will be exercising, chilling inside with me, and probably crating at night.

Crazyk9, the setup needs some adjustments to be safe. When I hear of people having "yard accidents from hardware failure" it is from using rings connected to the car axle or lap links or weak chain..... CrazyK9....Use Two O rings through collar. And replace the lap links with cold shuts. Then get rid of that chain. Use a transport grade 70 chain. And wrap the chain around the car axle(with the cold shut...) Dont use the o ring at the bottom... And then use a sledge hammer to get the car axle a foot below the ground. And then add a little bit of pea gravel to cover it. Or a bag of sand will do... Put some say sand will wear down your hardware faster JFYI. And then you got yourself a succesful chainsetup. And you will be in good shape. I would be worried if i were to put one of my adult dogs on that setup. And good choice in the collar btw

And 1 swivel is fine. Just wrap chain and use cold shut .. put axle through it. IT wont get tangled.

I would suggest this collar ring. Got them at the bulldog supply Co. 2 1/2" diameter. Heavy duty. I think the connectors are a matter of preferance. Everybody is different when it comes to connectors. Never heard a bad response about the cold shut. I would definitley go with a stonger version of the same size chain. One of these rings should be plenty. no matter what you choose in the end you should inspect it regularly.
