IMO...If you don't have it done by a vet, you're an idiot. I have only had 2 dogs ears cropped by my choice, and the ONLY reason i had it done was because they held moisture in their ears, due to them being so flat hanging, and this cause bad ear infections. Got their ears cropped and never had a problem with infections again.

I think it should be done by a vet.Saw one guy cut his dogs ears of with scissors and the dog looks f'ed up.I would rather leave my dogs ears on then let some unproffesional cut my dogs ears off.

Back in the early eighties i dealt with a-guy that always did the ears on dogs he intended to keep or place and he always did them right after they were born like immediately said they felt no pain .don't no if that's true-or-not but he believed it any-ways they were all cut real short and as they aged some of the ears looked good some sort of not but i noticed that even when they were full-grown the flies liked to nibble on the tips(this was in texas) so i never rally liked it (cropped ears)plus it really made them (the dogs)look the like a fighting dog whether they were or not which is another reason i didn't care for cropping why draw any undue attention to yourself.that being said thou i don't think you need a vet or pain meds to do it if the dog is fresh but it probably would'nt hurt to have someone with experience around when you do-it because they might come-out a little better

This is something that should be taken lightly, AT LEAST have someone with experience around you when doing it.

i happen to have a world class ear croping vet in my city he has croped ears for dogman in 14 diff. countries an it only cost $125 for a lazer crop. I have seen a few dogs with croped hunt an it did not seem to keep a hog from holding them out if anything it worked against them ,because the hog just grabbed them by stop or jaw an rode it out .. I prefer un-croped ears ,why try an fix something that is not broke ?..

I remember my first dog and her crop... i was def nervous and almost did not do it. The gas they used to nock her out was the worst part of it for her. Once that wore off she was up and running around like a nut.. like 4 hours. Will i do it again, only if the dogs ears are messed up like hers where. My second dog i left alone as he had perfect rose bud ears and i thought he looked good with em. I had so many people say it was wrong inhumane blah blah it will only make her look mean. In the end i say its your dog do as you wish.. and if you are hung up about it hurting the dog dont be unless you let some retard do it in the shed. At least bring the dog to a vet with proper meds that is clean and someone that has done it hundreds of not thousands of times.

I won't ever crop a dog myself or have it done unless I plan to show and the dog has hound ears or something... But honestly, there is very little good from it, almost always done for looks and I won't start lopping parts off my dog because I think he'd look better with three toes or something.

I've seen a cropping done on lightly sedated dogs, and it's ridiculous, the pups fight and scream and I don't see doing it because you like it better than what the pup was born with.

And if you are going to do it, go to someone who can prove they do a great job and who will completely put her under.. like, uh, a VET.

I wanted to crop my girl's ears when she was first given to me but my friend who gave her to me said his cousin would do it but I didn't trust that. I decided to leave them and I really love her rose prick ears maybe that's why I don't really care as opposed to bat ears :p

When it comes to color nothing matters unless it is blue:confused:, then it matters. A dog should be judged on performance and not looks but ear croping falls to another categorie:confused:. Personally I prefer natural looks, in modern days ear croping reminds me of Ambullies. Everybody is entitled to his/hers property which in this case is the dog, so I can not say anything against anybody, although I never watched an ear croping by an owner/expert, I would feel better if someone was adding the info about ice use or maybe a novocaine cream.

This is one thing i stand firm on it is cut clear a dog is someones property crop them if you like it don't crop them if you don't plain and simple but if you do get em cropped atleast get em cropped by someone who knows what they are doing and make sure the dog isn't in any pain we have those of you saying it's cruel think before you speak it is no worse than you having surgery, getting teeth pulled, being circumcised or even spaying or neutering i have owned horses as far back as i can remember and i can also remember the old timers and people still today cutting their horses and mules out in the field lay em down give em something for pain and clip em out no big deal hell most of the time they wouldn't even give them anything for pain but if you know what the hell your doing i don't see a problem at all if you don't know what the hell your doing on the other hand and do not have anything for pain leave it to someone that does

I had my girls ears done at 16 weeks. i took her to one of only two places in the northeast that was a vet. i went into the operating room with him to talk about the style cut i wanted,, he never asked me to leave. After she shit herself being put under with gas he cleaned her ears and put em in these clamp things. then he took a cotterizing gun and cut through the flesh. When he took of the clams i could not believe the amount of blood that came out all over the place. He made real quick work of sewing them back up. She was outa it for a few hours after and i felt wicked bad.. like wicked bad. I had her fixed like 3-4 months later and when she came home she acted the same way as with the crop... she was outa it for a few hours and then wanted to bounce of the walls again. I came to the conclusion at this point that i had nothing to feel bad about.. it was not that pain that had her outa it but the drugs to nock her out. I would do it again in a minute however natural ears have grown on me at this point so i doubt i will?

My brother's friend learned this the hard way, took his dog to this dude that does ear crops as a side job but he didn't do it correctly at all. One is flopped to the side and the other one looks crooked but I also think he didn't follow through with the ear taping correctly I know another guy with a doberman that didn't pull through because the guy lacked to do the ear taping correctly. I only have 3 dogs right now and I have one with a crop job from a vet here in town. To me it is just a preference decision I personally however like them natural if the ears are not bat or long one up and one down looking.

That is a awsome analogy! LOL

I like ears elnatural. However I hate doctoring ears more than anything else. So if one is going to crop...cut them off! Battle crop!

There is a guy I know that had a yard accident and one of his dog's ears got ripped up badly. The left ear was hanging and the right one had severe lacerations. The vet cropped it for him, it resembles a short crop. The dog was 4 years old at the time and the dog didn't even notice it afterwards. 3 hours after the surgery, the dog was acting like himself and wanted to go after anything on four legs and with fur. In my humble opinion, I don't believe anyone has the right to infringe upon people's properties and if the dog is yours, the decision is up to you, not anyone else. Also I'd like to add that if a 4 year old dog has gotten his ears cropped and sustained no permanent or even noticeable temporary changes, handicaps, behavior, etc. Then why would a pup? If done right by an experienced person, vet or not, then it isn't cruel at all. Just my two cents.

i have seen it done with razor and sissiors all on young dogs, the after care is what keep the ears from folding or shrinking, i myself like to read my dogs, you can tell a lot by looking at those ears
