You drive the axle into the ground so the dog doesnt wrap his chain around it in the winter and get stuck outside and die. I would never use a cement block and I would never hook an S-hook to the axle.

Damn, well don't want any dog dying on my yard from getting tangled up around the axle.

Ok, so what I got from all this and previous threads is this:
    1) Use a car axle, 4-6 ft. long. Drive it into the ground leaving it a foot above the ground to attach the chain to it.
    2) Attach a higher grade chain to the axle and connect it back to itself with a lap link or cold shut.
    3) Attach an eye to eye swivel to the small chain wrapped around the axle with a lap link and attach the 10-20 ft. of chain to the swivel with a lap link.
    4) Follow step 3 at the other end but attach the lap link to an O-Ring and run War dog collar through it.
    5) Double check, tripple check everything is correct and then hammer the axle down into the ground till it's level with the rest of the area.
If I missed anything, please let me know. I figured you wouldn't hammer the axle all the way down till you checked to make sure everything was correct.

i sure cant speak about snow because we dont get much of that in texas. as far as a dog getting his chain tangled up and dieing i've never had that happen. i do admit that maybe i keep a close eye on my dog yard. my chainspots are raked at least once a week and checked dailey. here you got to keep a close eye out for pine needles and tree limbs. over 40 years i have keep dogs on a stake thats was not driven into the ground. sure not trying to argue thts for sure - just speaking from what i have seen. i did try driveing the stake all the way into the ground one time. i had the o-ring rust and i did not know it. I lost two heavy breed snooty females that day. i came home from work and both were expired. to this day i blame myself because i had buried that chain where i could not look at it all the time. each to their own tho- each of us just gotta do the best we can. how ever you do it i wish ya the best-dan

That's a good point on burying them. I know you should bury them if you have the axle away from the dog house. Some people put the axle far away from the dog house, so their dog has more room to run. I keep my axle close to the dog house cause I live in the city and don't have much space. I don't bury my axle cause I know it is impossible for them to wrap their chain around the axle. Murphys law is a mother fucker!

Don't use lap links. They come apart. Use S hooks, cold shuts or quick links w/ loctite.

Benthere can you give me an example of something better to use than lap Links. Thanks

I figured you would like that. Wardog collars are the only collars I have...:D

Dan, thanks bud. I will figure everything out and I have a lot of info coming from this thread so that's good. I'll figure out what is best for me when it's all over with but I would like to have a start so I'm not going into it 100% blind.

Lap links and S-hooks can/will come apart. I use either cold shuts (the best, IMO) or quick links with the threads stripped (or that Locktite stuff as has already been mentioned).

Just keep in mind that the more connectors you have, the weaker your set-up (i.e. more points at which your system can fail). Also, IMO it's not necessary to have a swivel at the axle end. And since using one requires more connectors - weaker setup.

you don't have to use a different chain to put around your axle, you can just use the same chain your dog is on and either attach it to itself around the axle with a cold shut/quick link or attach it to a good solid large O-ring around the axle.

everything else you said is great. I wish you the best! :)

Thanks ElJayBee, I appreciate it. After I get everything set up, I'll post pictures on here but that won't be for another 6 months.
Again, thanks everyone for you help. :)

as far as the lap link rusting...id use a big assed cold shut if your burying the axel which i personaly prefer, as i feel it looks nicer, is safer...and sometimes i flirtpole them on their chainspots and i dont want their silly ass to ram into an axel. i check on my yard twice per day minnimum and make sure shit isnt in cluttering up my yard.

as far as setup this is what i use and recomend 1) take8-15ft of grade 70 transport chain(i use 12ft)2) loop chain, use big coldshut to close loop off-I actualy use two 3) put chain loop through axle 4) then attach lap link or cold shut to big double O ring swivel 5)bury the whole thing 6inches or more underground.

this is the collar and swivel i use...in my opinion this is the best collar made(this one has a few months wear)...and my personal favorite swivel design

as far as lap links coming apart on collar side i check that shit everyday i would notice them coming apart even a tiny amount and would hammer it back shut

    Webster,
When lap links come apart it doesn't happen slowly. The dog hits the end of the chain and the lap link opens and they are loose. Had it happen with a couple of them before I quit using them. The first time it happened I was standing right there.

Ok so laplinks come apart quickly. Well, so far I have gotten a bunch of good answers and comments about do's and don'ts. 6 Weeks till I get to the house so we will see how much of this I retain...:D

I use these as my anchors.
Harvest 48 in L Earth Anchor with 6 in Dia Auger - 3610927 | Tractor Supply Company
I bury it till the eye is barely showing. Then I hook 12" piece of chain through the eye. At the end of that I put a 3/8 galvanized swivel. Then the 12' chain, another swivel and collar ring. I like a swivel at each end in case one locks up. The reason I use the 12" piece of chain is because the dirt will eventually mound up around the base and it helps to keep the swivel out of the ground.

Well, that's what I was also thinking of with the swivel issue. You ain't had problems with those anchor's? I'll take a look at those also. They have a tractor supply store an hour away from me that I can stop and check them out. Thanks Yardboy
